THIS book is intended to be a guide for theological students in the first year of their course of preparation for the ministry of the gospel. It gives an outline of the various departments of theology, defines their nature and aim, their boundary lines and their functions and value organic connection, respective ; it sketches their history, and indicates the best methods of prosecuting their study. It answers the purposes of a map for orientation. Formal Encyclopaedia, Methodology and Bibliog raphy are here combined. The new title PROPAEDEUTIC, which I have chosen after a good deal of reflection, is more comprehensive and more appropriate than the usual title ENCYCLOPAEDIA, which does not necessarily include Methodology and Bibliography, and is almost exclusively understood among us in the sense of an alphabetical dictionary of the matter of knowledge.* I beg the indulgence of the English reader for introducing a uniform terminology in the singular form for the several de partments, as Isagogic, Canonic, Patristic, Apologetic, Dogmatic, Ethic, Symbolic, Polemic, Statistic, Homiletic, Catechetic, lAturgic, Poimenic, Evangelistic. Some of these terms are new and sound strange, but they are coined after analogy from the Greek, like most of our scientific designations. The singular form is shorter than the plural and more in accordance with Greek and German usage. This your piety has accorded to you, this your chaste life, this your love of your people, this your observance of the Law, your devotion to your marriage, whose repute was your concern. For all these deeds your hope for a future life is assured. From all of this your sorrowing husband seeks comfort. (CII, no. 476) While Greco-Roman anti-Semitism is well known, even notorious, the pro- Jewish attitude of many governmental figures and intellectuals in antiquity is often overlooked. Again this collection provides a welcome balance by devoting two chapters-at least 43 pages-to citations from Greek and Roman statesmen and thinkers that are distinctly philo-Semitic. These include not only the familiar extracts of decrees in Syria, Asia Minor, Greece, and Italy favorable to the Jews that are found in the pages of Josephus, but laws and exemptions of Roman emperors ruling in the second to fifth centuries A.D. that were supportive of Jewish rights and privileges. The Theodosian Code, for example, even permitted Jews to own Christian slaves, and this at a time-A.D. 415-when most of Rome had converted to Christianity: We order the Jews who are owners of Christian slaves that they shall have them without [legal] chicanery, on this condition, however, that they shall permit them to keep their proper religion.

Kloosterman * INTRODUCTION [28] Amid all the distress surrounding the discipline of theology today, it is undoubtedly a heartening phenomenon that the science identified as Ethics seems to be enjoying an unheralded resurgence of interest, compared to former times. This does not mean, of course, that everything in this discipline is flourishing. Not all of the causes to which Ethics is indebted for this resurgence are heartwarming. The way in which people try to dislodge the firm foundations of this discipline, or seek to caricature and deny its eternal principles, is far from encouraging. But that people are curious about the moral life and attempt to clarify its nature, principle, and essence, do provide reasons for rejoicing and gratitude, I think. Formerly, the discipline of Ethics received sparse attention, consisting mostly of explaining the doctrines of virtues and duties. Ferdinand Christian Baur survived the beginning of our half-century by a single year, but his distinctive work was done many years before, and he had been influential in directing the studies of several church historians who predeceased him, as well as many that outlived him and extended their activities into the present period.

    ANTICIPATION IN THE THOUGHT OF WOLFHART PANNENBERG John Andrew McClean BSc (UNSW), BD Hons. (Moore) A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Melbourne College of Divinity March 2010 Abstract This thesis presents an interpretation and assessment of the thought of Wolfhart Pannenberg by studying the role of anticipation. A review of critical appraisals of Pannenberg’s work, and his own descriptions of his approach to theology lead to the identification of major questions for understanding and assessing Pannenberg’s theological project, especially the relationship between theology and philosophy. The discussion also shows that Pannenberg’s work can be examined for internal coherence and for coherence with the claims of other fields of study. In an initial exposition of Pannenberg’s use of anticipation it is shown that in the discussion of revelation the concept of anticipation enables him to understand revelation as God’s self-revelation in which the content and form of revelation are identified with God’s essence and also hold that God’s existence remains debatable. An examination of Pannenberg’s philosophical milieu concludes that the atheism associated with the “end of metaphysics” is the primary philosophical challenge for Pannenberg. He responds to this challenge in the context of the “relational turn” which means that he takes the demand for a historicist hermeneutic with full seriousness, while refusing to abandon metaphysical claims. It is shown that in order to achieve this, Pannenberg offers a metaphysical proposal in which reality can be understood in relation to the true Infinite only as the true Infinite is understood as the triune God and that this understanding requires an account of reality which appeals to Christian eschatology and views reality as developing to a completion which is granted to it from eternity.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF EARLY PREMILLENNIALISM Tom's Perspectives by Thomas Ice I believe that premillennialism is so clearly taught in Revelation 19 and 20 that I still cannot understand how anyone can think otherwise without realizing deep down that they are going against the biblical text. A kingdom reign of the Messiah was just as clearly taught in the Old Testament. Jesus and His Scripture writing disciples also support the notion of an earthly kingdom headed by the Messiah. Such clearness in the Bible provides the likely reason why the early church fathers who spoke on this matter were all premillennialists. THE FIRST PREMILLENNIALISTS The first premillennialists were those who received God’s revelation and wrote it down in the Bible. Eusebius tells us that one of the earliest church fathers that had heard the Apostle John and others who had known the Lord and His Apostles was Papias (A.D. 60–130) the bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia, Asia Minor.
