Halperin AN AGNOSTIC APPROACH TO IVAN THE TERRIBLE1 In order to demonstrate that everything significant about Ivan’s life is contested, this article attempts to catalog as many as possible of the contested major issues touching Ivan. The author defines what we donot know about Ivan as everything that is uncertain, disputed, contested, problematic, or unexplained, even or especially if some historians think we know it but cannot “prove” it beyond a shadow of a doubt. Consequently, the author is conflating problems of source provenance, definition of concepts, interpretation, context, contradiction, and comparison, and thus reducing suggestive analysis and probable explanation to the unknown. The author has organized this survey of our ignorance under thematic rubrics: Sources, Ivan’s Life, Political History, Social History, Religion and the Church, Economic History, Foreign Policy, and Ivan’s Legacy. Any historian who proposes to study Ivan should begin by realizing the degree of uncertainty attached to historical studies of his life and reign. MAN IN NATURE Pre-Christian Eastern Slavic Reflections on Nature Molly Kaushal What follows is a simple account of how, in earlier times, the Eastern Slavs, particularly the pre-Christian Russians, interacted with nature. Pre-Christian slavic religion was mainly based on nature worship. Fire, Earth and Water figured prominently in its beliefs and ritual practices. The forces of nature were personified, feared, and revered, and the Slavs developed a whole pantheon of gods and goddesses. However, the three main gods of their pantheon were linked together not in a hierarchical way, but in a mutually complementary way, where each was incomplete without the other. A whole cycle of rituals revolved around various forces of nature and their personified images. The arrival of Christianity as the official religion and the establishment of the Russian Orthodox Church culminated in the banning of many folk ritual practices which were pre-Christian in origin, and in the persecution of those who practised them. Yet, a complete annihilation of earlier beliefs and practices could never be accomplished. Pre- Christian beliefs and gods exerted such a strong influence upon the Russian mind that the only way to come to terms with them was through incorporating them in the mainstream of the Christian order. Water, Fire, and the Mother Earth Goddess were, and have remained, the most powerful images of Russian religious beliefs and practices, and folk memory has remained loyal to the personified and non- personified images of these elements. According to some scholars, Rusi, or Russians as we call them, have their origins in the word Roce. -

The Three-Headed One at the Crossroad: A Comparative Study of the Slavic God Triglav* Jiří Dynda This paper introduces a comparative analysis combined with a historical source overview concerning a particular Slavic god: Triglav. The aim of this paper is to verify the hypothesis that Triglav was, in the cosmological perspective, a deity connecting the struc- tured layers of the world. Numerous indications from various written and archaeological sources may be drawn upon in the forming of a comprehensive picture of competences of this deity. Keywords: Triglav, tricephality, cosmology, crossroads, Indo-European comparative mythology 1. Introduction I would like to present an interpretation of western Slavic deity called Triglav. As a basis for this study, I have chosen the tricephalic nature of this deity, and I treat it both with the comparative and the historical-contextual methods. Setting the tricephality into the wider context of the Indo-European comparative mythology in correlation with a thorough analysis of our medieval sources, i.e. mostly Latin texts from medieval Po- merania and Brandenburgia from 11th to 13th centuries, can lead to the detection of some of the Triglav’s “faces” that were not much visible until now. The claimed tricephality of Triglav’s simulacrum (and, in general, the polycepha- lity of various Slavic deities) was an important issue in the long-standing scholarly dis- cussion, and the interpretation of this symbolic feature differs from scholar to scholar.1 Is the tricephality of Triglav a result of a Celtic influence? Or a Christian one? Her village was near the present boarder of Belarus. Her father, Vasyl, was a farmer and her mother, Zoya (Bahnskya) Motyka, was a housewife. Annushka’s family had a long history of ancient traditions and worship of the “old gods” of Slavic times. It is said that Annushka was a direct descendant of Dazhbog, the sun god. In her memoirs she writes, “.......when I was young, I would often bathe in the stream most sacred to Veles near my village. This is, without a doubt, the reason why my family and I are blessed.” From an early age, Annushka had abilities to heal and predict the future. It is said that, in a dream, she predicted her father would severely hurt himself by accidently hitting himself with an axe while he was cutting wood. Three days later, the prediction came true. While splitting wood to heat their home, Vasyl Motyka swung an axe and missed the wood, therefore hitting himself in the leg. Vasyl was said to make a full recovery in 2 days, with the help of his daughter. Annushka the Historical Person As far as historical facts go, Annushka Motyka was born to Vasyl and Zoya (Bahnskya) Motyka in December of 1798 in or near the village of Udryts'k in modern-day Ukraine. -

The symbol’s broad ability to personify tragic events created a versatile system of imagery that transcended its folkloric derivations into the realm of Russian literature, becoming a constant literary device from eighteenth century to post-Soviet fiction. The vampire’s literary usage arose during and after the reign of Catherine the Great and continued into each politically turbulent time that followed. The authors examined in this thesis, Afanasiev, Gogol, Bulgakov, and Lukyanenko, each depicted the issues and internal turmoil experienced in Russia during their respective times. By employing the common mythos of the vampire, the issues suggested within the literature are presented indirectly to the readers giving literary life to pressing societal dilemmas. The purpose of this thesis is to ascertain the vampire’s function within Russian literary societal criticism by first identifying the shifts in imagery in the selected Russian vampiric works, then examining how the shifts relate to the societal changes of the different time periods. -

Shelley Meagher Politics and Persian Mythology in Irish Poetry IN 1809 LORD BYRON was prevented by the Napoleonic wars from taking the European Grand Tour. He instead sailed south, through the straits of Gibraltar and across the Mediterranean, to tour Greece and Turkey. On his return he published the first two Cantos of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage (1812), a poem whose hero follows in Byron’s wake eastwards. Gratified by the acclaim Childe Harold received, Byron next published two action poems set in Turkey, The Giaour (1813) and The Bride of Abydos (1813). These fluent ‘Turkish Tales’, as he called them, sold very well and whetted the public’s appetite. On the day Byron’s next Turkish tale, The Corsair, came out in 1814, it sold 10,000 copies. There was one problem. For two and a half years Byron’s friend, Thomas Moore, had been composing a poem set in the Persianate cultures of Mughal India and Persia (as Europeans then termed Iran). Moore was alert to differences between Turkish and Persian culture. But to the general public, both cultures were simply eastern. When sales of Byron’s Turkish poems rocketed, Moore fretted that Byron had stolen his opportunity. Byron tried to allay Moore’s fears. ‘Stick to the East!’ he wrote to Moore in May 1813. ‘The little I have done . is only a “voice in the wilderness” for you; and, if it has had any success, that will only prove that the public is orientalising, and pave the way for you.’1 When, six months later, Byron proceeded to pave Moore’s way further with The Corsair, he knew very well that Moore would be alarmed. -

Configuring the Roots of Zahak Myth according to the Elamites’ Cylinder Seals (3rd Millennium B.C.) Bita Mesbah* Abstract What is different about Iranian art is the use of hybrid motifs which is a characteristic of the Iranian art. The hybrid forms show the impact of the mythological beliefs. These beliefs also have changed a lot so it is hard to recognize the exact meaning of these motifs. Shahnama is the source of great myths in Iran and is the main source for tracing myths between the Islamic periods and the mythological beliefs before Islam. This research is based on studying the snake-man which is known as Zahak in Shahnama. The research focuses on three cylinder seals (the impressions found) which show the snake-man. These cylinder seals were found in Susa, Tepe Yahya and Tepe Shahdad. All three date back to the third millennium B.C. The snake- man which has two snake or dragons on the shoulders was well-known in Iran and Mesopotamia. The god of the dead is basically showed by this motif in Mesopotamia. Especially, Ningišzida is a Mesopotamian deity of the underworld. His name in Sumerian is translated as “the lord of the good tree”. The city of Lagash had a temple dedicated to Ningišzida, and Gudea, patesi of Lagash in the 21st century BC, was one of his devotees. -
