Comments Forward 23 Thomas Coleman 6-9 220 Coleman continues to pace the rest of the MEAC in blocked shots and he is closing on the Aggies all-time blocks record and could have by the time he is a junior…Coleman had two more blocks on Monday and needs just two blocks to reach 100 blocks for his career. He leads the Aggies in FG pct. at 60.6 percent. Forward 34 Robert Johnson 6-6 220 Johnson had a career game against Tennessee Wesleyan on Monday when he scored 21 points on 9-for-10 shooting…He also had seven rebounds…He is third on the team in scoring and is fourth in the conference in scoring at 56.2 percent…Johnson leads the conference in free throw shooting at 82.1 percent. Center 5 Julian McClurkin 6-8 225 McClurkin is a key member of the Aggies rotation because his long arms and leaping ability helps him play the center position, which moves Coleman to a power forward position where he is more effective. Guard 21 Ed Jones 6-7 215 Jones is one of the Aggies strongest shooters from the perimeter…Jones has been excellent from the line lately…He has hit his last 11 free throws…He is 5-for-17 from the floor in his last two games. LAST TIME OUT The North Carolina A&T men’s basketball game against Tennessee Wesleyan Monday night quickly turned from a basketball game into a comfortable evaluation period for head coach Jerry Eaves as the Aggies get ready for the re-start of conference play on Saturday.

The Aggies got a near-perfect night from their Greensboro duo to earn an 84-47 win over the Bulldogs at Corbett Sports Center. Greensboro Dudley graduate Robert Johnson finished with a career-high 21 points on 9-for-10 shooting. He also had seven rebounds. Fellow Greensboro native and Ben L. Smith graduate Tavarus Alston had 15 points on 5-for-5 shooting and added six assists.

Despite the relative ease the Aggies won with Monday night, there are some areas of the game Eaves spotted that will need improving before making a run at a MEAC title.

Coleman finished with seven points on 3-for-3 shooting and had six blocks, putting him two shy of 100 for blocks for his career. Shepherd had a career-high eight rebounds and McClurkin had an impressive dunk toward the end of the game.

In terms of perimeter shooting, the Aggies were just 3-for-16 from 3-point range. In years past, when the Aggies main scorers were 3-point shooters that was a problem for Eaves and the Aggies. This season, however, Eaves said his team has the ability to score around the basket with its size.

“Three-for-16 last year buries us,’’ said Eaves. “If we go 3-for-16 a year ago, we only win this game by maybe four points. But 3-for-16 this year is not a disaster for us because we’re not having to score from out there to be successful.”

N.C. A&T was successful in most everything it did Monday night. The Bulldogs’ Rudy Adams hit a 3-pointer 5 ½ minutes into the game to pull the Bulldogs to within four at 13-9. Alston answered with a 3-pointer and the Aggies were in domination mode from there. A Nick Wilson jumper put the Aggies up by nine, 24-15 with 11:44 remaining in the first half.

North Carolina A&T men’s basketball coach Jerry Eaves almost pulled off his annual ritual – upsetting a team from a major conference. But the Aggies managed to convert on just one field goal in the last seven minutes of the game to fall to St. Louis 60-52 at Chaifetz Arena Friday night. Thomas Coleman led the Aggies with 14 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Tavarus Alston added 10 points and three assists.

Eaves, who watched his team beat Conference USA’s SMU Mustangs in 2006 and the Big East’s DePaul Blue Demons in 2007, had the Atlantic 10’s St. Louis Billikens down by 14 at the half. The Aggies maintained their double-digit lead until a Tommy Liddell III dunk six minutes into the second half cut the Aggies lead to 44-35.

Kevin Lisch’s jumper moved the lead to seven before a technical foul on the Aggies bench gave the Billikens two more points on free throws. A free throw by Liddell completed the Billikens’ 7-0 run to cut the Aggies lead to 44-40 with 12:31 to play. But the Aggies continued to keep the Billikens at a distance. Coleman went high to rebound a missed shot from teammate Dwane Joshua. He came down and quickly went back up for a dunk and a 50-45 Aggies lead with less than nine minutes to play.

Barry Eberhardt answered for the Billikens with a layup just before a media timeout. Out of the timeout, Willie Reed made an excellent cut to the basket and teammate Paul Eckerle saw him and zipped a pass to him for a layup and a foul on Coleman. Reed completed the 3-point play to tie the game at 50.

The Aggies all but duplicated the play on their next possession as Alston went backdoor on the baseline and received a pass from Julian McClurkin to give the Aggies a 52-50 lead with seven minutes remaining. Alston’s layup would be the Aggies final field goal of the game.

Both teams struggled from the floor over the final seven minutes, but two Brian Conklin free throws tied the game at 52 with four minutes remaining, and another Conklin free throw 90 seconds later gave the Billikens their first lead since the 16:19 mark of the first half.

The Aggies had a chance to regain the lead, but committed a turnover on one possession and had a Coleman short-range jumper roll off the rim on another. Willie Reed took advantage by scoring on a layup with 32 seconds remaining. After another Aggies turnover, their sixth in the final six minutes of the game, the Billikens sealed the game with free throws.

THE SERIES The Aggies and the Bears will be meeting for the 70th time on the court. The Aggies lead the all- time series 41-28 with the Bears winning last seasons match-up 87-66 at Corbett Sports Center. N.C. A&T head coach Jerry Eaves is 4-5 against the Bears, while Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman is 2-1 against the Aggies. The Aggies are 4-6 against the Bears in the last 10 meetings between the two schools.

THE BEARS Morgan State is coming off of the biggest win in school history as they defeated the University of Maryland Wednesday night at Maryland’s Comcast Center 66-65. The Bears have also defeated the Big East’s DePaul Blue Demons this season. The Bears, who are coming off a season in which they claimed the MEAC regular-season title, are constructed differently this season. A year ago, the Bears used their size to dominate. This season, the Bears possess solid guard play led by 6-foot-4 junior Reggie Holmes. Holmes, who led the Bears over the Terrapins with 25 points, averages 15.1 points. No other Bear averages in double figures.

THE AGGIES The Aggies are coming off of an 84-47 win over NAIA Division II Tennessee Wesleyan. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Aggies. Robert Johnson was spectacular. He was 9- for-10 from the floor for a career-high 21 points. Thus far this season, the Aggies have used their athleticism and height to be productive. The Aggies like to play in the 70’s and 80’s. In the Aggies six wins, they are averaging 80.1 points per game. Before going on a five-game losing streak against top competition, the Aggies were averaging 70.9 points. The Aggies have four players averaging 10 points or better, but none of them average more than 11.5 points.

THE GAME This game could go along way in establishing who is the team to beat in the MEAC. The Bears and the Aggies play each other just one time this season, and both teams have shown signs they are ready to compete for a MEAC Championship. Morgan State has defeated DePaul and Maryland during its non-conference schedule. The Bears also beat defending MEAC Champion Coppin State by 14 in December. The Aggies meanwhile, defeated mid-majors Coastal Carolina and Texas-Pan American. The Aggies also had close calls against UNLV, Evansville and St. Louis. They defeated Norfolk State by 27 in December. The Bears finished last season undefeated at home, so the Aggies will have tough time avenging the 21-point loss to the Bears that occurred last season.

LOOK FOR… …The game to be won on the glass. The Aggies are just 1-7 when they are out-rebounded. If the Aggies are strong on the glass against the Bears it could produce a big win for them on the road. The Aggies are 5-1 when out-rebounding an opponent.

…The point guard play to play an important role in Saturday’s game. Tavarus Alston is off to a good start this season, but Morgan State point guard Jermaine Bolden is also effective with the basketball. Both have point guards have more assists than turnovers with Alston having 56 assists to 39 turnovers. Bolden has 63 assists to 39 turnovers.

…The Aggies to try to earn their first road win of the season by getting the ball inside to Thomas Coleman. The 6-9 sophomore can probably be more of a threat offensively in the conference. If he is, it will give the Aggies added valuable weapon to go along with athletic swingmen Robert Johnson, Nick Wilson and Ed Jones.

ABOVE .500 North Carolina A&T accomplished a feat it hasn’t accomplished in 12 years. The Aggies finished 9-7 in the MEAC, which marked back-to-back seasons in which the Aggies finished above .500 in the conference. The Aggies have not accomplished back-to-back above .500 seasons in the MEAC since they did it during the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons. If the Aggies are able to finish above .500 in the MEAC this season, it will be the first time they did it since it was accomplished 1992-1995. In two of the seasons, the Aggies won the MEAC Tournament.

JERRY’S BIG WIN ADVENTURES North Carolina A&T head coach Jerry Eaves had a difficult task when he accepted the position to turn around the Aggies program. The Aggies had won just one game the previous season and only had 8.3 points returning. In his six years, however, Eaves has managed to earn some of the biggest wins in the history of the program. Last seasons win over DePaul, was the highest rated team in the RPI the Aggies had ever defeated. On the next page is a list of Eaves’ biggest wins.

WHAT THE AGGIES LOST The North Carolina A&T lost a lot of fire power from its 2007-08 team. The Aggies lost two of the best 3-point shooters in school history and one of the best rebounders in school history. Steven Rush hit 193 3-pointers in just two seasons for the Aggies, while Austin Ewing hit 133 3-pointers in 64 games played. Jason Wills finished his career ranked fifth on the Aggies all-time rebounding list and compiled 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and more than 200 assists.

WALTER BOOTH IS BACK Head coach Jerry Eaves welcomed back one of his favorite players to be an assistant coach this season. Walter Booth, a Silver Spring, Md. native, returns to Aggieland as an assistant coach after finishing his eligibility with the Aggies following the 2006-07 season. Booth led the Aggies in assists his final two seasons. Booth also started for Eaves his final two seasons and Eaves always complimented him on well he knew the offense. Booth replaces longtime assistant Alphonza Kee who left the Aggies to take a job at Grambling. Assistant Scott Bollwage was moved up to be the top assistant, making room for Booth. HEAD COACH JERRY EAVES

As he enters his sixth season as the North Carolina A&T men’s basketball coach, Jerry Eaves has turned a one-win program into a MEAC contender. Over the last two seasons, Eaves’ teams have finished above .500 in the conference. The Aggies program has not had back-to-back wining seasons in the conference since 1994-95 season.

Eaves’ 15-win total in 2006-2007 was the program’s best season in 10 years. He repeated that feat in 2007-08, establishing the Aggies return to respectability. In six seasons, he has had a player lead the league in scoring, another player was one of the best 3-point shooters in the country and he has recorded two of the biggest wins in program history when you considered the opponents’ RPI.

Eaves has successfully recruited Division I and junior college transfers who are ready to play on the court and excel in the classroom while his recruited high school talent sits and learns. Once those younger players are ready, they are also ready to contribute. Seasons at N.C. A&T: 6th season When he arrived on N.C. A&T’s campus, he brought with him a wealth of experience after numerous stints on both the Hometown: Louisville, Ky. collegiate and professional levels as an assistant. He rebuilt a program that started with him taking over a team that returned just four players who averaged a combined 13.1 points per game from the previous season. The Aggies won just Education: Louisville, 1986, one game a year prior to Eaves taking the position. B.A., Business and Sports Management In year No. 1, he took those players, along with some late additions, and won three games. In season two, he showed Coaching Experience more improvement by winning five home games and breaking a 32-game road losing streak. The following season, Eaves 2003-Present -North Carolina earned six wins before 2006-2007 15-17 overall record and 10-8 conference mark that included an upset win over A&T, Head Coach Southern Methodist University and former Associated Press Coach of the Year Matt Doherty. 2002-2003 - , Assistant Coach A year ago, Eaves then defeated DePaul University on his way to a 15-16 overall mark and a 9-7 record in the conference. DePaul was the highest ranked RPI team the Aggies have ever defeated. 1999-2002 - , Assistant Coach Eaves came to Greensboro after one season serving on the staff of John Lucas for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National 1996-1999 - University of Basketball Association (NBA). Before he came to Cleveland, Eaves spent three seasons in Charlotte, N.C., where he was Louisville, Assistant Coach an assistant for the Charlotte Hornets. He worked with Paul Silas, the organization's all-time leader in wins.

1994-1995 - New Jersey Nets, Assistant Coach Both Eaves and Silas were on the New Jersey Nets staff during the 1994-95 season when they were assistants under then head coach Butch Beard. It was the first of two campaigns that Eaves would spend with the Nets before returning to 1990-1994 - Howard University, his alma mater, the University of Louisville, as an assistant to Hall of Fame coach . Assistant Coach

Playing Experience Eaves spent three seasons (1996-99) at Louisville, helping lead the Cardinals to a combined 57-40 record and two NCAA 1978-82 - Louisville Tournament appearances. Prior to his stints with New Jersey and Louisville, he was an associate head coach at Howard 1982-84 - University for four years under Beard (1990-94), supervising recruiting, scheduling travel and practices. 1984-1985 - 1985-1986 - He helped the Bison win the school's only MEAC Championship in 1992 and a berth in the NCAA Born Tournament. As an NBA professional, Eaves played in the league for four seasons. The Utah Jazz selected Eaves in the February 8, 1959 third round (55th overall pick) of the 1982 NBA Draft. Eaves appeared in 162 games in two complete seasons for Utah and

Hometown also played for the Atlanta Hawks (1984-85) and Sacramento Kings (1985-86). Louisville, Ky. He averaged 6.7 points and 2.5 assists in 168 career NBA games. For the 1989-90 season, Eaves served as a scout for High School the Utah Jazz before he began pursuing his passion of coaching on the college and professional levels. Ballard

At Louisville, Eaves was the starting point guard on the 1980 NCAA championship team that defeated UCLA in the final game in Indianapolis. It was Eaves who made the decisive defensive stop on UCLA standout forward and former Denver Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe to help the Cardinals win the game. In four seasons with the Cardinals, Eaves averaged 9.7 points, on 50.5-percent shooting from the floor, 2.6 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 129 career games and was named All-Metro Conference for the 1980-81 season. Eaves ranked 30th on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,250 points.

He was inducted into the University of Louisville Athletic Hall of Fame. Prior to Jerry Eaves’ arrival at the University of Louisville, he was a star at Ballard High School as a three-year starter. He earned a selection as a McDonald's All-American following his senior season (1978). He led Ballard to a state championship during that same season.

A native of Louisville, Ky., Eaves earned a degree in business and sports management from the University of Louisville in 1986. Eaves and his wife Sheila have four children: Lee Anne, Ashley, Frankie and Anthony.
