Crania Japonica: Ethnographic Portraiture, Scientific Discourse, and the Fashioning of Ainu/Japanese Colonial Identities by Jeff Braytenbah A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Thesis Committee: Kenneth J. Ruoff, Chair Laura Robson Jennifer Tappan Portland State University 2019 © 2019 Jeff Braytenbah Abstract Japan’s colonial activities on the island of Hokkaido were instrumental to the creation of modern Japanese national identity. Within this construction, the indigenous Ainu people came to be seen in dialectical opposition to the 'modern' and 'civilized' identity that Japanese colonial actors fashioned for themselves. This process was articulated through travel literature, ethnographic portraiture, and discourse in scientific racism which racialized perceived divisions between the Ainu and Japanese and contributed to the unmaking of the Ainu homeland: Ainu Mosir.

Us AUTHOR'S PREFACE IT is to be feared that of the facts set forth in this volume " many " are of a distinctly unpleasant nature, so unpleasant that the writer would fain have omitted them. But had he done so he would have failed to substantiate his case i.e., that the German people are undeniably a degenerate race, if not the most degenerate race in Europe. Moreover, the writer contends that these un- wholesome facts (taken largely from German sources), nauseous as they may be, demand to be placed on record in a British publica- tion. Further, he believes such facts cannot be too widely known, and that their knowledge will be of value in combating the pre- " " posterous and dangerous peace ideas unfortunately held in various quarters in Great Britain : For instance, among those ill-informed, emasculated individuals styling themselves the " Union of Democratic Control." Also the writer would commend a perusal of the statistics in reference to German vice and crime contained herein to those of our politicians (and they are many) totally with the mental and moral condition of the unacquainted " " German people. Recognizing the adult character of many of the statements and facts recorded in this book the writer thought it best to obtain responsible opinion as to whether such statements and facts should be made public, and he therefore approached Mr.

Scientific Authority, Nationalism, and Colonial Entanglements between Germany, Spain, and the Philippines, 1850 to 1900 Nathaniel Parker Weston A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2012 Reading Committee: Uta G. Poiger, Chair Vicente L. Rafael Lynn Thomas Program Authorized to Offer Degree: History ©Copyright 2012 Nathaniel Parker Weston University of Washington Abstract Scientific Authority, Nationalism, and Colonial Entanglements between Germany, Spain, and the Philippines, 1850 to 1900 Nathaniel Parker Weston Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Uta G. Poiger This dissertation analyzes the impact of German anthropology and natural history on colonialism and nationalism in Germany, Spain, the Philippines, and the United States during the second half of the nineteenth-century. In their scientific tracts, German authors rehearsed the construction of racial categories among colonized peoples in the years prior to the acquisition of formal colonies in Imperial Germany and portrayed their writings about Filipinos as superior to all that had been previously produced. Spanish writers subsequently translated several German studies to promote continued economic exploitation of the Philippines and uphold notions of Spaniards’ racial supremacy over Filipinos. However, Filipino authors also employed the translations, first to demand colonial reform and to examine civilizations in the Philippines before and after the arrival of the Spanish, and later to formulate nationalist arguments. By the 1880s, the writings of Filipino intellectuals found an audience in newly established German scientific associations, such as the German Society for Anthropology, Ethnology, and Prehistory, and German-language periodicals dealing with anthropology, ethnology, geography, and folklore.

  • Catalogue the Spectre of Comparison
57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia The Spectre of Comparison Philippine Pavilion Artists Lani Maestro Manuel Ocampo Curator Joselina Cruz Foreword The Spectre of Comparison Filipino Identity May Have Never Existed In the twentieth century, the continuous flow of goods, information, technology and people has dest- abilised identity paradigms that served as markers to objectify biological and cultural characteristics of an ethnic or racial group. Identity can no longer be derived from just a sense of “homeland”, both real and mythical, rooted in ge- ography. As globalism established a monopolised cap- italist culture it would seem like there are no borders or bounds. Everything and everyone is in a state of constant conversion; identity becomes blurred and contested. Albeit controversial and contrived, identity serves as a way to achieve belongingness of a nation. When we are able to catalogue our sameness it stimulates kinship, homeland, biological or cultural heritage. Sameness and difference are crucial to the formation of identity. Isolation and interaction are both powerful forces in shaping cultures. With isolation, a culture depends on itself to evolve and reinvent itself, producing sev- eral unique things that can be seen nowhere else in the world. This culture will enrich the world with its singular cultural items when it eventually comes in contact with it. Isolation though can stunt a culture, preventing it from flowering in the absence of other cultures that can pollinate it. 7 Philippine Pavilion On the other hand, a culture with long and numer- ous interactions with other cultures can also be en- riched although it will often be in danger of losing its unique identity.
