Invoking long, lazy summer days. A light lunch and animated chats with great friends. Let’s raise a glass of cool champagne in celebration of the strong and independent women we are.

These placemats are an easy and fun project. I so enjoyed working with the colors I chose. The bright colors, contrasted with the stark white, are happy colors and lifted my mood every time I worked on the project. The pattern lends itself to endless color possibilities and I look forward to seeing pictures of your creativity.

I used a combination of DK (#3) for the main part and Superfine (#1) for the contrast color. You can use any yarn weight. Simply adjust the size to accommodate your chosen yarn as described here.

Approximately 38 x 30 cm (15 x 12 inches).

To alter the width

The width is easily adjusted by increasing or decreasing the number of stitches on the foundation row, using the following formula:

Use a number that is multiple of 6 plus another 1 , for example:

6 x 14 = 84 (must be a whole number) then add 1 to 84 = 85 

The number in green must be a whole number.

To alter the length

Work more or less of the pattern repeats (Rows 2 – 7).

Please bear in mind that any alterations to the size of the placemat will affect the yarn quantities as specified below. This will also affect the pattern repeats as specified in the instructions below.

 If you have a loose tension, it is recommended that you adjust your hook sizes down from the recommended sizes in this pattern, to obtain the correct gauge.  If you have a particularly tight tension, you should adjust your hook sizes up to obtain the correct gauge.

Gauge

Gauge (tension) is very important when making a garment. It is essential that you make a swatch using sc and DK (##) yarn before starting the pattern.

Using the 3.5mm hook, gauge worked in sc and measured over 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) must be:

24 rows x 20 sts

If you are finding it difficult to achieve the correct height, but your width is correct, then please Google “Crochet Golden Loop”. You will find several video tutorials which will assist you to easily understand why this is happening and how to adjust your crochet technique to achieve the correct gauge.

Yarn

If you decide to use a different weight yarn to that specified, the placemats will not be the same size as the sample made in this pattern. Please ensure that you are using the correct weight yarn before starting. This, together with gauge, is very important.

If you are unsure of what weight your yarn is, please check the label for the meterage/yardage. The yarn should be approximately 125m / 137 yards – DK (3) and 240m / 262 yards – Lace (1) per 50g ball. You may use any brand of yarn if it meets the meterage/yardage requirements specified.

The preferred yarn used in this pattern sample is ColourSpun Pure Cotton DK / 8 Ply. ColourSpun is a South African brand, which we are justifiably very proud of for the following reasons:  ColourSpun yarn is created by hand; therefore, each skein is imbued with the artist's energy and will have its own unique characteristics.  Cotton is the most used fiber in the world. It is a non-allergenic cellulose fiber that doesn't irritate sensitive skin and is ideal for warmer weather.  ColourSpun Pure Cotton Yarn is ring spun (a process that gives greater durability while maintaining softness, making it perfect for and crochet) from the finest quality, locally produced, pure, natural cotton and colored by hand in the ColourSpun studio using a chemical free, earth-friendly process. All the dyes used are GOTS approved and have excellent wash-fast and light-fast properties.

Difficulty

I have given this pattern an easy rating. With the assistance of the video tutorials, I believe that even beginners would be able to easily complete the project, however, you would need to have basic crochet skills, as this is not a “how to crochet” project.

Testers

A huge thank you goes to the following lovely and talented ladies who tested the pattern for me:

 Kim Lategan (South Africa)  Valerie Burton (South Africa)

They did this so willingly and with so much enthusiasm. I am truly grateful to them for their ongoing support.

Resources

Thank you to The Craft and Yarn Council’s web site www.craftyarncouncil.com, which has been a great resource.

Inspiration

Most of the inspiration came from many, many years of crafting with crochet. I thank my late “Ouma” – Gertie Kaltenbrunn, and my mother, Beryl Kaltenbrunn for their tuition over the years. My granddaughter Neave Weston inspired me to start to design and document my work. This pattern is dedicated to them.

This is a simple, repetitive pattern, i.e. a pattern worked over 6 rows. I have prepared basic video tutorials to assist those who are visual learners. However, you will need access to the written pattern to be able to complete the project as the video tutorial does not cover the entire design.
