It is soft, warm and elegant. It has a wonderful textural drape. It also has the added benefit of being reversible. I love both sides. Right Side Wrong Side I used a mixture of 4 ply (USA 1) for the main Color and 8 ply (USA 3) yarn for the overlay contrast colors. Mixing the 2 yarn weights gave the garment a lovely texture, while still remaining quite lightweight – 760g (27 oz.). To alter the length Work more or less of the pattern repeats (Rows 12 – 17). Please bear in mind that any alterations to the size of the shawl will affect the yarn quantities as specified below. This will also affect the pattern repeats as specified in the instructions below. If you have a particularly tight tension, you should adjust your hook sizes up to obtain the correct gauge. Gauge Gauge (tension) is very important when making a garment. It is essential that you make a swatch using sc before starting the pattern. Using the 4.5mm hook, gauge worked in sc and measured over 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) must be: 28 rows x 20 sts If you are finding it difficult to achieve the correct height, but your width is correct, then please Google “Crochet Golden Loop”. You will find several video tutorials which will assist you to easily understand why this is happening and how to adjust your crochet technique to achieve the correct gauge. Yarn If you decide to use a different weight yarn from that specified, the Winter Solstice Shawl will not be the same size as the sample made in this pattern. Please ensure that you are using the correct weight yarn before starting. This, together with gauge, is very important. If you are unsure of what weight your yarn is, please check the label. The yarn should be approximately 163m / 178 yards – 4 ply (1) per 50g ball. You may use any brand of yarn if it meets the requirements specified. Tap or click here to view ColourSpun kit options. The preferred yarn used in this pattern sample is ColourSpun Pure Merino Super Wash. ColourSpun is a South African brand, which we are justifiably very proud of for the following reasons: ColourSpun yarn is created by hand; therefore, each skein is imbued with the artist's energy and will have its own unique characteristics. This extra soft, super wash yarn is mill-spun and Herco treated to prevent felting and then hand dyed in our indie dye studio using an earth-friendly process and dyes. All the dyes used are GOTS approved and have excellent wash-fast and light-fast properties.
