Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms podcast. This is episode 13. Last time, Wang Yun managed to kill Dong Zhuo, but was soon killed himself by Dong Zhuo’s generals led by Li Jue and Guo Si, who then seized power in the capital and kept the emperor as their puppet, much as Dong Zhuo had done. This prompted Ma Teng, the governor of Xiliang, and Han (2) Sui (4), the imperial protector of Bing (1) Province, to join forces and march on the capital. Jia (3) Xu (3), an adviser to Li Jue and company, had suggested that they simply stay behind the city’s walls and wait until the enemy run out of provisions, at which point it would be forced to retreat. But Li (3) Meng (2) and Wang (2) Fang (1), two of Li Jue’s officers, were aching for a fight, and they convinced Li Jue to give the 15,000 men to go take on Ma Teng’s army. And so off they went. When they met Ma Teng’s forces, both sides lined up in battle formation, and Ma Teng and Han Sui rode out. They pointed at Li Meng and Wang Fang and cursed them. “Who wants to go capture these traitors?” they asked. Before they were done talking, a young general darted out from Ma Teng’s lines. His face bore the complexion of flawless jade. His eyes were like shooting stars. He had a lithe yet powerful build. He wielded a long spear and rode a fine steed. -

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This Is Episode 2
Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms podcast. This is episode 2. Previously on the Three Kingdoms, the empire was in trouble. The emperor was weak. The eunuchs were meddling in state affairs. A rebellion had broken out. Three warriors -- Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei -- had sworn to be brothers and work together to restore peace to the land. However, after some early success, their commander was framed by a wicked eunuch and removed from power. So the three warriors were on their way home when they ran into an imperial army being smacked around by the rebels. Our three heroes rode into the fray, turned away an immense rebel army all by themselves, and rescued the commander of the imperial army, Dong Zhuo, who was the governor of Hedong. However, this Dong Zhuo was an arrogant ingrate who turned his nose up at our heroes the minute he learned that they held no rank. This ticked off Zhang Fei, and he was about slash his way into Dong Zhuo’s tent and kill him. Fortunately for Dong Zhuo, and, as we will learn next week, unfortunately for everyone else, Liu Bei and Guan Yu restrained their brother. "We can’t kill him! He is a government official," Liu Bei said. "If I don’t kill this bastard and end up having to serve under him, I would never be able to stand it!” Zhang Fei said. “You two can stay here if you wish to, but I’m going elsewhere.” "We three are one in life and in death; we cannot part from each other,” Liu Bei said. -

Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is Episode 1. Before we dive in to the narrative, we’re going to begin with a poem. This is a common technique in ancient Chinese literature. The poem at the beginning of a long epic often provides a meta view of the saga that is about to unfold. So keep the images and ideas from this poem in mind as we progress through the story of the Three Kingdoms. The song goes: O so vast, O so mighty, The Great River rolls to sea, Flowers do waves thrash, Heroes do sands smash, When all the dreams drain, Same are loss and gain. Green mountains remain, As sunsets ingrain, Hoary fishers and woodcutters, And some small rafts and calm waters, In autumn moon, in spring winds, By the wine jars, by porcelains, Discuss talk and tale, Only laugh and gale. Chapter 1: In the peach garden three men of valor swear brotherhood; by slaying the rebels the heroes record their first feat Ever since antiquity, domains under heaven, after a long period of division, tend to unite; and after a long period of unity, tend to divide. For instance, the Zhou dynasty lasted almost 800 years, from 1046 to 256 BC. Nearing the end of the Zhou, however, seven kingdoms sprang up and made war on each other until the kingdom of Qin prevailed and founded the Qin dynasty. This was the dynasty that gave China its first emperor. But the Qin dynasty only lasted 15 years, and when it fell, the kingdoms of Chu and Han battled for control of the realm, and Han emerged victorious.
