Aceptado: 2018-01-28 http://doi.org/10.22395/angr.v17n33a9 Resumen Se presenta en este artículo un estudio cualitativo que recopila las principales y más populares mascotas corporativas del sector de los videojuegos de la década de los años 90, una efímera tendencia empresarial que desaparecería en el siglo XXI y que estaba basada en el éxito previo de las compañías Nintendo y Sega con sus respectivas creaciones: Mario y Sonic. Por medio de un análisis comparativo entre estos personajes de videojuegos y las características de la juventud de finales del milenio (la denominada generación Y o millennial), se ha observado que el patrón común de todos estos símbolos mercantiles se fundamentaba en representaciones sociales y culturales relacionadas con el comportamiento, el aspecto físico, las aficiones y la psique de la juventud de finales del siglo XX. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power.

Foi realizada uma pesquisa, utilizando o método de análise de conteúdo. A amostra conta com 15 páginas de desenvolvedoras de jogos eletrônicos no Facebook. O conteúdo analisado das páginas é de 1615 publicações, divididas entre textos, imagens, vídeos e/ou links. A pesquisa foi dividida em duas partes. A primeira buscou identificar em quais fases do PDP as empresas possibilitam a co-criação com o consumidor; também buscou-se analisar os objetivos de cada publicação.

Not to be quoted without the prior permission of the project team. 1 Video Games Production Networks: value capture, power relations and embeddedness Abstract This paper has two main aims. First, to conceptualise the production networks of the video games industry through an examination of its evolution into a multi-million dollar industry. Second, to use the video games industry to demonstrate the utility of Global Production Network approaches to understanding the geographically uneven impacts of processes of globalisation. In particular, three key notions of value, power and embeddedness are used to reveal the most powerful actors in the production network, how they maintain and exercise their power, and how the organisation of production is manipulated as a result. It is argued that while hardware production is organised by console manufacturers using truly global sourcing strategies, the production of software is far more complex. In fact, software production networks are bounded within three major economic regions – Western Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. This paper seeks to explain how and why this has occurred. 2 1. Introduction The video games industry1 was born during the early 1960’s and has rapidly, and almost continuously, grown in size and scope ever since. It is estimated that the industry was worth around $23.2 billion in 2003, and is predicted to reach $33.4 billion in 2008 (DFC Intelligence, 2004).
