Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} You're Missin' a Great Game by Whitey Herzog RetroSimba. Why Cardinals wanted Whitey Herzog in, Ken Boyer out. When Whitey Herzog became Cardinals manager, he replaced a friend who had been his roommate and teammate with the Mets. On June 8, 1980, the Cardinals fired manager Ken Boyer and hired Herzog to succeed him. Boyer, an all-star and Gold Glove Award winner as Cardinals third baseman in the 1950s and 1960s, was their manager since April 1978. Herzog managed the Royals to three consecutive division titles before being fired after the 1979 season. In 1966, the Mets had Boyer as their third baseman and Herzog as a coach. In his book, “White Rat: A Life in Baseball,” Herzog said he and Ken Boyer shared a New York apartment with Yankees players Roger Maris and Clete Boyer, Ken’s brother. “When the Mets were on the road, Clete and Roger had the place, and when the Yankees were on the road, Kenny and I took it over,” Herzog said. After Boyer was fired by the Cardinals, he told a St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter, “Wish Whitey Herzog good luck. I hope they can turn it around.” The comment was relayed to Herzog, who said, “I appreciate that. We are very good friends.” Time for a change. After Herzog left the Royals, Cardinals general manager John Claiborne called him occasionally to seek his opinions on players. Claiborne and Herzog had worked together for Bing Devine with the Mets. At one point in their conversations, Herzog said, Claiborne asked whether he’d want to become a paid consultant to the Cardinals.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings January 4, 2016 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1940 - In a trade of pitchers, the Cincinnati Reds send Lee Grissom to the New York Yankees for Joe Beggs, who had to clear waivers from all seven American League teams. This is due to the new rule voted last month barring the AL pennant winner from any trades within the league. Beggs will go 12-3 for the Reds, while Grissom will be sold to the Brooklyn Dodgers on May 15th. MLB.COM Opportunity with Reds in front of Rodriguez Prospect has chance to land outfield spot in Spring Training By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | @m_sheldon | CINCINNATI -- The stars appear to be lined up just right for longtime Reds outfield prospect Yorman Rodriguez ahead of Spring Training. Cincinnati is rebuilding and willing to take a long look at the club's young players. There is definitely an opening in left field, and there could be another one in right field if Jay Bruce is traded. And Rodriguez, 23, is out of Minor League options. "From a maturity standpoint, he's just older. He's got way more at-bats now. He's a guy that can do a lot of things in the outfield," Reds manager Bryan Price said on Dec. 5. "He was starting to get to his power, stealing a few bases, playing much better defense. So I think he's the type of guy that if this kid comes in, has a good winter ball, shows us something in Spring Training, you see him at least as a platoon player on your club in this situation." Being out of options doesn't make Rodriguez a lock, however.

The team has played in various leagues, in different ballparks, and with several affiliations in the course of its history. It has provided training for several future major league stars, including some who have been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Indians remained in the American Association until 1962, when the league folded. The team then spent one season in the International League followed by five years in the geographically distant Pacific Coast League. The Indians rejoined the American Association upon its reformation in 1969. After the American Association dissolved in 1997, the Indians once again became part of the International League in 1998.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings October 23, 2018 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1975-30,000 people jam into downtown Cincinnati for the parade and presentation of the world championship trophy. A few schools close at noon to allow students to attend MLB.COM Reds name David Bell new manager By Mark Sheldon MLB.com @m_sheldon Oct. 22nd, 2018 CINCINNATI -- The moment that the Reds front office placed a No. 25 uniform on the back of new manager David Bell on Monday was the clearest sign that no one was hiding from his legacy in Cincinnati. Twenty-five is the same number that his grandfather, Gus Bell, wore for the Reds in the 1950s and his father Buddy Bell donned in the 1980s. And now it's worn by the third generation of Bells in Major League Baseball and Cincinnati. The Reds named Bell as their new manager on Sunday and introduced him during a Monday news conference at Great American Ball Park after they signing him to a three-year contract through the 2021 season with a club option for '22. "It's what I always wanted and what I dreamed of," Bell said. "To have an opportunity to work with people you respect and like and truly are in it to be all together with one goal, this is what I was hoping for." Bell, 46, was also strongly considered for managerial vacancies in Texas and Toronto, but he knew which team he really wanted to work for when the Reds first contacted him about three weeks ago. He didn't hesitate once the job was offered after two rounds of interviews.
