Bonita Springs High School Bull Shark News 2019-2020

August 12th - 17th Message from the Principal

Bull Sharks,

What a fantastic start to our 3rd school year! I want to thank every member of the Bull Shark Family for all of your hard work leading up to our successful opening. It takes a lot of people, putting in a tremendous amount of work, to get a high school ready and we nailed it.

I want to thank Jill and the APs for helping me hire nearly 30 new employees (that is a lot of interviewing and processing!), Dennis and the custodial crew for making the campus look so amazing, and Matt, Missy, and the counselors for their work in enrolling 400 new students (100% of the kids had a complete schedule on Day 1). Also, a big shout out goes to our amazing tech specialist, Brady Williams, for getting all of the technology ready to go. I have no doubt, we were the fastest and most efficient school in the district for Chromebook distribution. It makes a big difference for students and staff, great job Brady (thank you to all of his helpers as well).

For those new to our school, we utilize the Bull Shark News as our main tool for distributing information to all personnel. This weekly communication tool is meant to be a one stop shop for all things Bonita Springs High School. This helps us limit the volume of emails and helps us all to be on the same page. Each edition contains a message from me and news related to Curriculum, Operations, Athletics and Activities, and Testing.

I hope everyone has a wonderful end to their weeks.

Respectfully,

Mr. Estes Proud Principal

School Operations

Tardy/Cell Phone/Dress Code Plan Tardies: It is a schoolwide expectation that students arrive on time to class. Students that arrive between 7:05 and 7:15 are allowed to enter your class, but you need to mark the student TU in Focus. If the student arrives after 7:15 he/she should have a pass from the Main Office. If the student does not have a pass please send the student to the Main Office to check-in.

Discipline Procedures for Tardies and Cell Phone 1st occurrence: verbal warning to student and document as a Student Conference in Castle. 2nd occurrence: phone call home to parent and document conversation under Parent Contact in Castle. 3rd occurrence: referral with the parent contact dates in the ‘notes’ section of the referral. 4th+ occurrences: continue with referrals.

**Please note that the discipline procedures/referrals will be handled by the main office for those students that check in to school late after 7:15. Teachers are responsible for tardies before 7:15 and tardies to class during the school day.

Dress Code We expect our students to follow the dress code policy and be clothed appropriately. Please send any students out of dress code to the guidance office if they are unable to correct it.

Restorative Practices/Behavior Interventions When a student is not following the rules we believe in providing interventions to educate and provide Opportunities for students to change their behavior. Below are a list of actions that you can take in your classroom prior to writing a referral: 1) Warnings 2) Student conference 3) Change seat 4) Team/Buddy Timeout 5) Call home

The team/buddy timeout approach can be used when you need the student to leave your classroom for the moment without wanting the student to be in the in-school suspension room. If you utilize the team/buddy timeout approach make sure you set this up with a teacher nearby so that the teacher is expecting it (we don’t want students wandering the halls). If you send the student out please send work with the student as well. Lastly, make sure you talk to the student when he/she returns back to your class at the end of the period.

If you are having trouble with a student please call home. Phone calls should be made home prior to writing referrals, unless the student does something egregious in class. If there is something that needs immediate attention, please call for administration (x1102); however, if it is something that can be talked

about after class, please call the parent. Parent communication can be beneficial when trying to change behavior

Drills In response to nationwide events, we now have new drill requirements in our district. We will have monthly fire drills as well as monthly lockdown/active shooter drills. We will always notify staff of planned drills. The following dates are tentative fire and lockdown/active shooter drills: ● August 15th: 3rd period fire drill (must be done within the first 14 days of school) ● August 21st: Lockdown drill (during assembly) ● August 22nd: 4th period fire drill (must be done within the first 14 days of school)

Classroom Doors Teachers - all doors, including classroom doors, must be shut and locked at all times, even during your planning period.

Class meetings August 19th and 20th we will meet with 9th and 10th graders in the Black Box Theatre during their English class. The juniors will have a class meeting on Wednesday, August 21st. Please note the dates for your planning purposes.

Building requests All building requests need to be put into Castle. This will be an easy way for our maintenance staff to Prioritize and keep track of anything related to the building.

Security Please take a moment and look over the security assignments and responsibilities for AM, Passing, and PM locations for the duration of the school year. This information can be found in the BSHS 2019-2020 Google Drive folder. We need the support of all staff members to help ensure we have a safe and secure campus.

Passes 1st 15 minutes

Student passes are strongly discouraged during the first 15 minutes or the last 15 minutes of every class period. At all other times of the day a student must have a digital pass through Castle while in the halls during class time. Please do not allow students to use the restroom during bell change; instead, have them wait until after the first 15 minutes has passed.

Time Clock A reminder that all employees must clock in and out on a daily basis. A weekly attendance report will be run to ensure all employees are in compliance.

Staff Sign Out There is a staff sign out book located in Jill’s office. If you need to leave school at anytime during your work day, you must get your Administrator’s approval and manually sign out as well. If you know ahead of time that you need to leave early or during your work day, you can email your Administrator for approval ahead of time.

Teacher Absences All teacher absences are reported via the LMS system. If you discover you are ill or have an emergency that is after 6:00am please input the absence into LMS and call or text Jill Cornell at 239-220-9298 to advise that you will be out. Absences for any other reason than illness self or illness other require completion of a leave request form (obtained from Jill) and prior authorization from the Principal.
