The Marathon has been part of the River To River Festival for six years, and this year kicks off the month-long celebration of free music, dance, film, theater, play, and arts events throughout Lower Manhattan. Founded in 1987, the Marathon will again bring together more than 150 astounding performers and composers from around the world, performing in numerous experimental genres. Bang on a Can’s annual 12-hour-plus Marathon has become one of the most diverse, open, and engaging music events in the world. Of last year’s event, The New York Times reported, “Disparate strands from the contemporary classical, jazz, electronica, world music and indie rock spheres were neatly woven together into a crazy-quilt representation of adventuresome notions. You could liken the program to a quirky mixtape or iPod playlist, except that its reach was broader, more like a Last.fm Internet radio channel, idiosyncratically sequenced, then made available for public consumption.” This year’s Marathon begins at 11am (sharp!) with an outdoor kick-off on the plaza featuring the renegade street band Asphalt Orchestra performing music by STEW/Heidi Rodewald and Yoko Ono (and later on music by David Byrne/Annie Clark, Goran Bregovic, Björk, Frank Zappa and more). Moving inside the Winter Garden, the Marathon will gather significant premieres alongside landmark legendary works: among the many highlights of the day are the explosive Bang on a Can All-Stars teaming up live with Philip Glass to perform the early 70s classic Music in Similar Motion as well as works by a whole new generation including Bryce Dessner of The National and Boston’s Christine Southworth; a rare performance by New York’s legendary Glenn Branca of his massive hour-long work Ascension: The Sequel; the NY premiere of Fausto Romitelli’s theatrical An Index of Metals performed by Talea Ensemble (set to top their celebrated premiere of Romitelli’s Professor Bad Trip on last year’s Marathon); the US premiere of the ever inventive Brit Richard Ayres’ Three Small Pieces for String Quartet performed by the ferocious JACK Quartet; Philadelphia’s Prism Saxophone Quartet playing Xenakis’ crazy-hard Xas alongside works by young composers Kati Agócs with her meditative Hymn and Roshanne Etezady’s sparkling Keen; the US premiere of Poul Ruders’ brand new Songs and 1 Rhapsodies performed by Athelas Wind Ensemble with accordionist Frode Andersen; effervescent composer-singer Toby Twining marking his return to New York with a new band of singers and the release of his new CD Eurydice; the incomparable and outer-planetary Sun Ra Arkestra; the fearless Signal performing Julia Wolfe’s blistering string orchestra work Cruel Sister, also just out on CD; a full set of US premieres by Milan’s unparalleled chamber band Sentieri Selvaggi including music by Carlo Boccadoro, Filippo Del Corno, Michael Nyman and more; Evan Ziporyn’s beautifully buzzing clarinet quartet Hive; Young People’s Chorus of New York City teaming up with cellist Maya Beiser on Michael Harrison’s meditative Hijaz and then with JACK Quartet for Michael Gordon’s Exalted; David Lang’s hard-rocking electric guitar duet Warmth; bagpiper/composer Matthew Welch performing with Queens College Percussion Ensemble; Anthony Gatto’s new work for a battery of 19 drummers; featured virtuosic solo performances by Timo Andres, Alejandro Escuer playing Gabriela Ortiz, Todd Reynolds, and more. 2011 Bang on a Can Marathon Schedule: Please note that times are approximate and subject to change. NORTHERNSTANDING WAVE SOCIETY PRESENTS standingVISIONS wave ensemble Tuesday November 6 at The Cultch welcome Welcome to Northern Visions, the first concert of Programme Standing Wave’s 2012-2013 Season. The North, as Glenn Gould called it, “that incredible tapestry of tundra and Two Sides taiga country,” holds a special fascination for many Fabian Svensson [2007] artists, composers, and musicians. Most of the music on flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, percussion tonight’s program has in one way or another, passed through a northern filter. Daniel Janke’s Weather Kalais Coming, is a kind of musical diagram of the complex, Thorkell Sigurbjörnsson [1976] shifting patterns of migratory birds seen overhead in his Yukon home. Thorkell Sigurbjörnsson’s Kalais describes flute, windhose a Wind God from Icelandic mythology. Norwegian composer Rolf Wallin’s The Age of Wire and String, The Light Within based on chapters of Ben Marcus’ audacious book of John L. Adams [2007] the same name, is cryptic yet funny; alienating, yet flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, percussion, tape beautiful. Fabian Svensson’s Two Sides is essentially an argument (actually a near-rumble!), in which the INTERMISSION utterly opposed “sides” circle around one another, speaking the same harmonic language, yet stubbornly The Age of Wire and String and aggressively refusing to agree. Alaskan composer Rolf Wallin [2005] John Luther Adams’ The Light Within, which is based on flute, clarinet, violin, viola, piano the large-scale installation art of James Turrell, serves as a metaphor for the “northern” experience which each 1. Snoring, Accidental Speech piece on tonight’s concert touches on: at first, the music 2.

ABSTRACT OF MUSICAL ARTS PROJECT Andrew Michael Bliss The Graduate School University of Kentucky 2008 DAVID LANG: DECONSTRUCTING A CONSTRUCTIVIST COMPOSER ______________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT OF MUSICAL ARTS PROJECT ______________________________________________________________ A musical arts project submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky By Andrew Michael Bliss Lexington, Kentucky Director: James B. Campbell, Professor of Music Lexington, Kentucky 2008 Copyright © Andrew Michael Bliss 2008 ABSTRACT OF MUSICAL ARTS PROJECT DAVID LANG: DECONSTRUCTING A CONSTRUCTIVIST COMPOSER The percussion compositions of David Lang hold a prominent place within the percussion solo repertoire. Lang’s constructivist approach to composition, as well as his resistance to tradition, has secured him a highly respected position among performers and composers alike. Percussion repertoire is yet to receive the in-depth scholarship that it currently warrants. Considering the relative youth of the genre, a Pulitzer Prize winning composer such as Lang’s interest in percussion writing should not be overlooked. Furthermore, the logistical nature of dealing with percussion notation, orchestration, and performance requires a specialist, making it difficult for most musicologists to offer the proper insight and observations. This monograph exposes the complex and multi-dimensional solo percussion works of David Lang, specifically The Anvil Chorus, Scraping Song, and Unchained Melody. The document provides insight into the composer’s intentions while offering strategies to confront the physical and psychological issues that arise when preparing these works for performance. It also deconstructs Lang’s compositional processes and reveals the similarities in his approach from piece to piece, thus clarifying his style.

  • The Solo Piano Music of David Lang
THE SOLO PIANO MUSIC OF DAVID LANG Karl Larson A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS December 2012 Committee: Laura Melton, Advisor Kenneth Thompson Marcus Zagorski Beatrice Guenther © 2012 Karl Larson All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Laura Melton, Advisor Since the inception of Bang On a Can in 1987, David Lang has become one of the most successful American composers of his generation. Along with fellow Bang On a Can founders Michael Gordon and Julia Wolfe, Lang has built a strong career composing minimalist influenced music in a postminimalist world. His resultant style features music that, like early minimalist works, is highly repetitive and limited in musical means. However, Lang's work lacks an emphasis on transparency in process and compositional method, an imperative quality in early minimalist music. David Lang's compositional output has been substantial in many areas; he is particularly well known for his works for percussion, various chamber groups, and vocal works. While these compositions are often played and highly regarded, his piano works have not been given the same attention. Beginning with 1983's While Nailing at Random up until 2012's Hard Hit, Lang has published seven single movement piano works as well as Memory Pieces, a set of seven pieces completed in 1992. David Lang's solo piano oeuvre is among the most substantial in the minimalist catalogue. This study was first to explore Lang's solo piano repertoire as a whole, both comparing it to other minimalist solo piano works as well as to one another in order to better understand Lang's development as a composer.
