  • Judah David Eisenstein and the First Hebrew Encyclopedia
    1 Abstract When an American Jew Produced: Judah David Eisenstein and the First Hebrew Encyclopedia Between 1907 and 1913, Judah David Eisenstein (1854–1956), an amateur scholar and entrepreneurial immigrant to New York City, produced the first modern Hebrew encyclopedia, Ozar Yisrael. The Ozar was in part a traditionalist response to Otsar Hayahdut: Hoveret l’dugma, a sample volume of an encyclopedia created by Asher Ginzberg (Ahad Ha’am)’s circle of cultural nationalists. However, Eisenstein was keen for his encyclopedia to have a veneer of objective and academic respectability. To achieve this, he assembled a global cohort of contributors who transcended religious and ideological boundaries, even as he retained firm editorial control. Through the story of the Ozar Yisrael, this dissertation highlights the role of America as an exporter of Jewish culture, raises questions about the borders between Haskalah and cultural nationalism, and reveals variety among Orthodox thinkers active in Jewish culture in America at the turn of the twentieth century.     REPORT FROM ARGENTINA TO BE SUBMITTED TO THE INTERNATIONAL TASK FORCE FOR HOLOCAUST EDUCATION, REMEMBRANCE AND RESEARCH (ITF) DECEMBER 2010 Introduction 1. The promotion and protection of Human Rights is an integral part of the Argentine Human Rights policies, and it has been set out as a priority for the current national government. Consequently, and based on the conviction that Holocaust Remembrance is closely related to the need of guaranteeing memory, truth and justice in all cases of truth and human rights, Argentina carries out its commitment, undertook in 2000 by signing the Stockholm Declaration. In this sense, Argentina is implementing activities related with Holocaust education, remembrance and research through three ministries and diverse non- governmental organizations (NGO) that form the Consultant Standing Committee or Local Chapter of the ITF. This group works as a forum for discussion and exchange of information and activities in order to promote ITF goals. 2. The pro-tempore chairmanship of this Consultant Standing Committee1 is organized by means of a rotational system involving different public agencies. During 2010, the coordination of the group is exercised by the Secretariat of Human Rights of the Ministry of Justice, Security and Human Rights. In that role, the Secretariat convenes monthly meetings in order to organize local activities related to its incumbent mandate.     CHANGES IN THE TRANSNATIONAL RELATIONSHIP OF THE WORLD ZIONIST ORGANIZATION AND LATIN AMERICAN JEWRY: INFORMAL EDUCAtion, 1968–2006 SILVIA SCHENKOLEWSKI-KROLL Resumen Los cambios ocurridos se refieren al transnacionalismo ideológico del Movimiento Sionista aplicado a las relaciones de su órgano ejecutivo, el Departamento de Juventud de la Organización Sionista Mundial (OSM) y sus variantes organizacionales durante el período determinado, con la juventud judía en América Latina, respecto a los movimientos juveniles sionistas pioneros, grupos y asociaciones no sionistas. A ello se anticipa la descripción del tipo de relaciones que precedieron a la Guerra de los Seis Días. Se trata de una evolución desde la consideración de la inmigración a Israel (aliá) como el objetivo principal y casi exclusivo de la educación no formal, hasta la visión de la educación judía como una meta en sí misma, de la cual forman parte integral el sionismo y el Estado de Israel.     QUEST N. 12 – FOCUS The Attitude toward Bereavement in Everyday Life in the Jewish Agricultural Settlements of Eretz Israel, from the First Aliyah to the 1920s by Devorah Giladi and Yossi Goldstein Abstract This article explores attitudes toward death and bereavement in the Jewish agricultural settlements of Eretz Israel (Land of Israel) from the First Aliyah (1881) to the 1920s, based primarily on newspapers of the period. The sources indicate that whereas members of the First Aliyah viewed death as a failure of the Zionist act and strived to conceal it to the best of their ability, the pioneers of the Second Aliyah effected a revolution in this realm, articulating a perspective that viewed death in the name of the Zionist act with pride and veneration as an attribute of the “new Jew.” This positive attitude focused on the casualties of Jewish guarding who were killed during clashes with Arabs, but also went further. Overall, the Zionist pioneers perceived blood as a means of actualizing the relationship between the Jew and Eretz Israel and expressed a desire to saturate the Land with their blood. The height of this process was the well- known pre-death utterance of Yosef Trumpeldor – a defender of the Jewish settlements in the Upper Galilee in the 1920s – that “it is good to die for our homeland.” This positive attitude toward sacrifice remained a prominent attribute of Zionism for many years to come.     Jewish Law in the Beit Midrash of Hasidism Levi Cooper* Hasidism – the movement, its leaders and adherents, its ethos and religious message – is often cast in shades of antinomianism or anomianism, suggesting that hasidic masters and their faithful disciples either flouted Jewish law or ignored it. According to this line, the hasidic attitude towards halakhah was not improvised, temporary, or provisional; rather, the disdainful attitude was ideological and systemic. In the following, I argue for a recalibration of this dominant narrative. My argument is rooted in the reality that – contrary to the widespread assumption – hasidic masters from the earliest days of the nascent movement were embedded in the world of halakhah and active in the legal realm. This aspect of Hasidism has yet to be fully explored. In order to banish the existing myth, I will first provide an account of the prevalent depiction: Where does it come from and how widespread is it?     Zionist Political Thought: Arguing Zionism Yeshiva University, Spring 2021 Rabbi Dr. Meir Soloveichik, Dr. Neil Rogachevsky and Dr. Liel Leibovitz Course Description What is Zionism? The question is trickier than it seems. On the surface, it is a movement advocating for the establishment of a national Jewish homeland as a sovereign state. Yet even now, seven decades after this movement achieved its goal, arguments continue about Zionism’s aims and essence. Rightly understood, these contemporary debates are rooted in arguments that occurred early in Israel’s history, between thinkers, writers, statesman, and rabbinic figures. This course aims to illustrate how Israel today can be best understood by an in- depth study of the history of these debates, and of the original writings of those who partook in them. Over the semester, we will analyze various arguments that have historically defined Zionism and that continue to shape it today. Expectations Readings and preparatory questions will be issued every week. Students will be expected to carefully prepare the readings, and submit, before each class, a short weekly written reflection in response to the questions.
