Luke 12:48 The love and service of one’s country follow from the duty of gratitude and belong to the order of charity. (CCC 2239) Born January 6, 1412, in Domremy, France, Joan of Arc and her family lived a quiet, pious existence. When Joan was about 13 years old, she began to have visions of St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret. These visions led Joan to Charles, King of France, to inform him that she would be the one to lead the military to defeat his English enemies and restore his rule to France. When questioned about how a simple peasant girl could accomplish such things she stated, “I am not afraid, I was born to do this.” Joan was successful but ultimately captured by the English, who executed her by burning at the stake on May 30, 1431. After her death, an appeal was made seeking the nullification of the charges against her. On July 7, 1456, Pope Callitus III declared Joan innocent. She was canonized on May 16, 1920, by Pope Benedict VI. It is within the everyday world that you, the laity, must bear witness to God’s Kingdom; through you the Church’s mission is fulfilled by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Council taught that the specific task of the laity is precisely this: to “seek the Kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering them according to the plan of God.” You are called to live in the world, to engage in secular professions and occupations, to live in those ordinary circumstances of family life and life in society from which is woven the very web of your existence. You are called by God himself to exercise your proper functions according to the Spirit of the Gospel … in the manner of leaven. It is for you as lay people to direct all temporal affairs to the praise of the Creator and Redeemer. As Catholic lay people you have an important moral and cultural contribution of service to make to the life of your country. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much (Luke 12:48). These words of Christ apply not only to sharing of material wealth or personal talents, but also to the sharing of one’s faith. (Pope Saint John Paul II) If I am not in a state of grace, I pray God put me there. And if I am in a state of grace, I pray God keep me there. Saint Joan of Arc, pray for us! Their principle work is that of the “Catholic Bible Life Movement (CBLM). The program is for adults and young adults who attend Bible study groups. Each course takes as many weeks as there are chapters in the Book being studied. There is reflection, meditation and practical application of the teachings in daily life. At present, the courses are only given in Korean but the Sisters are working diligently to be able to do the presentations in English. Rival families fought for control of the city, successfully fighting off the Saracens encamped close to the city, and then against various interlopers, from Lombardy, Tuscany and Germany. This article tries to use prosopography and genealogy to document the stratagems employed by the Roman aristocracy in this period to gain and retain power, especially through placements of popes.
