  • “The Stories Behind the Songs”
“The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.

Well fact is this is as good as you will ever likely get from any female singer anywhere…anytime. Since her last album Leslie has changed partners, with Amber Digby, would you believe. Amber’s partner, steel man Ricky Davis is now with Leslie and Randy Lindley, Lesley’s former husband is now Amber’s beau.

May 28, 2019, Issue 654 YTD Charts: New Kid In Town Astute readers don’t need analytics to figure out the big story in country music right now. Halfway through the chart year (Nov. 11, 2018 to Nov. 9, 2019), a dominant artist has emerged with the po- tential to shift the label chart share landscape for the first time in a decade. The name, of course, is Luke Combs. He’s the most-heard artist at Country radio with current music, according to data compiled by the good folks at Mediabase 24/7 (titles that start the chart year as recurrents or gold are not included). At the three-quarter mark last year, Combs wasn’t even a top 10 artist, his label wasn’t in the top 10 and he only had one song in the top Luke Combs 20 (“One Number Away”). By year-end 2018 (view here), he’d cracked the top 10, as had his label, Columbia – which goes to show how much can still change before the close of the chart year. Fortunately for Combs, he’s now in I Wear My Sunglasses At Night: EMI Nashville’s Eric Church (l) pole position on the strength of two songs in celebrates 30 million RIAA certifications for singles and albums the YTD top 5: “Beautiful Crazy” and “She Got with UMGN’s Cindy Mabe and Q Prime South’s John Peets The Best Of Me.” And he’s just posted a re- Saturday (5/25) at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium. cord-setting add date for his latest single “Beer Jason Aldean Never Broke My Heart.” Rounding out the top 5 artists are Kane Randy Travis Told You So Brown, Thomas Rhett, Jason Aldean and Most who’ve been around country music since the ‘80s have a Dan + Shay.
