    A Late Sasanian Coin Hoard from Orumiyeh Daryoosh Akbarzadeh*, 1 and Nikolaus Schindel 2 1Research Institute of ICHTO 2Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna (Received: 10 /03 /2013 ; Received in Revised form: 06 /09 /2013 ; Accepted: 19 /10 /2013 ) The coinage of the Sasanian Empire (224-651 CE) is not only the most important primary source for its monetary and economic history, but also of greatest relevance for its history and art history.Coin hoards are of pivotal importance for studying Sasanian coinage. On August 29,2007,two jars were unearthed during the construction work for the new border sentry post of “Havār-Barxāh-loh” in the Piran-Shahr region (close to the frontier village of Tamar- Chin, about 35 kilometres away from Piran-Shahr).The work was carried out by military personnel belonging to the frontier guard’s regiment. The jars contained altogether 1267 Sasanian silver coins, mostly from the Khusro II (590–628) period. Also numerous drachms of Khusro I (531–578) and Ohrmazd IV (578–590) were present, as well as a few late pieces of Ohrmazd VI, Queen Azarmigdukht, and one early Arab-Sasanian drachm. Using written and archaeological sources, this essay will attempt to show that the Persian Gulf was a mare nostrum for the Sasanian Persians in the same way that the Mediterranean was a mare nostrum for the Romans. The Sasanians considered the Persian Gulf to be part of their empire and made a systematic and continuous attempt to maintain control over it from the beginning of their dynasty in the third century C.E. The first was Kushanshahr, named after the Great Kushan emperors, who held sway from the Amu Darya (Oxus) valley to the Indus and at times as far as the Ganges. Here flourished the traditions of the Kushans, who had brought together the political, economic, social and religious currents of the time from the countries with which they had dealings (see Chapter 7). The second great empire (which rose to challenge Kushan power) was Eranshahr, which expanded both westward and eastward under the new Sasanian dynasty. Its eastern advance shook Kushan power to its foundation. Note that the areas marked with the “dry lake, wadi” symbol in inland Iran are treacherous “kavir,” a thin dry crust covering liquid mud beneath; many travelers have perished when the crust gave way beneath their feet. The only regions with significant settlement are in southern Iran (eastern Persis and Carmania) and Sistan (Drangiane). Very little archaeological fieldwork has been carried out in south-east Iran and western Afghanistan, and there are many outstanding problems concerning the historical geography of these regions between the beginning of the Achaemenid period and the end of the Sasanian. The standard works on Islamic historical geography (Schwarz 1896; Le Strange 1905) are based on written sources, and do not take into consideration any twentieth-century archaeological investigations; the same general point applies to entries in RE. The suggestions made by these scholars for the identification of ancient place names are often based on the similarity of modern and ancient ones; they are sometimes plausible, but seldom certain. In several cases it is certain that names have moved from one settlement to another. Sometimes the distances are not great: for example, Sasanian and early Islamic Darabgird is little more than four miles from modern Darab, and Sasanian and early Islamic Sirjan is about ten miles from the modern town of the same name. But in other cases the distances are greater: [Bardasir], for example, is about forty miles from modern Kerman.

    Map 97 Parthyene Compiled by E.J. Keall and M. Roaf, 1997 Introduction The map is dominated by the mountain ridges of the Koppet Dagh, Allah Dagh and Binalud in north-east Iran. To the north lies the Karakum desert in present-day Turkmenistan. Nisa(ia), the first capital of the Parthians, is situated near the southern edge of the desert; this region has been investigated by Soviet archaeologists, but very little systematic survey on the Iranian side of the border has been published. Hence the locations and identifications of ancient toponyms marked are for the most part uncertain. In the Achaemenid period this region belonged to the province of Parthava (Parthia), which also included Hyrcania. In the third century B.C. the Parni tribe invaded and adopted the name of the province as their own. In the following two centuries they established Parthian rule over most of the Near East as far west as the R. Euphrates. This region was almost unknown to Greeks and Romans, so that the names given by such authors as Strabo, Isidore of Charax, Pliny, Ptolemy and TabPeut may well be distorted; indeed, some are plainly so garbled as not even to merit inclusion as Unlocated Toponyms. There are few local texts which can illuminate the historical geography; more helpful are those early Islamic writers whose work contains information about earlier periods.     THE EARLY MUSLIM GEOGRAPHERS ON THE ETHNIC SITUATION IN KHURASAN (IX-XIII centuries A.D.) ALIY KOLESNIKOV St. Petersburg The ethnic problematic does not represent an independent object of studies in the Islamic geographical literature of the 9th up to 13th centuries. It occurs incidentally along with a description of provinces and towns, in cases when a geographer considers the ethnic definition of population in any locality as one of the characterological peculiarities of the area. Some geographers pay more attention to ethnic points, others - less, or simply don't touch the problem at all, in any context. All that, of course, creates the impression of a mot- ley of mixed data, which can not set up the full picture of the population in the lands of East- ern Iran and Afghanistan during the early-Islamic epoch. However, the summarized informa- tion helps a historian to define more precisely the settling regions of the principal ethnic groups. The conception of the main nation, i.e. the Persians, in Muslim geographical litera- ture has been influenced by the ancient Iranian state doctrine, which granted to Zoroastrian Persians the prominent role amidst the other, subjugated nations in the vast territories be- tween the Euphrates and the Hind. In the middle of the 10th century, al-Masudi in such a way outlined the regions with predominant Iranian population: mountainous districts of Media and adjacent provinces, Az- erbaydjan (i.e. genuine Iranian Azerbaydjan) up to Armenia; Arran and Baylaqan up to Dar- band ; the coastal Caspian provinces Shabaran, Tabaristan and Gurgan; Ray, Masqat (Eastern Oman); Abarshahr (Nishapur), Herat, Merw and other provinces of Khurasan; Sistan, Ker- man, Fars, Akhwaz (Khuzistan), "and the rest of Iranian lands, adjacent to this area at pres- ent".
