Fairbairn 1,2,3 ✉ and Chris Clarkson 1,2,3,10 ✉ Little is known about the Pleistocene climatic context of northern Australia at the time of early human settlement. Here we generate a palaeoprecipitation proxy using stable carbon isotope analysis of modern and archaeological pandanus nutshell from Madjedbebe, Australia’s oldest known archaeological site. We document fluctuations in precipitation over the last 65,000 years and identify periods of lower precipitation during the penultimate and last glacial stages, Marine Isotope Stages 4 and 2. However, the lowest effective annual precipitation is recorded at the present time. Periods of lower precipitation, including the earliest phase of occupation, correspond with peaks in exotic stone raw materials and artefact discard at the site. This pattern is interpreted as suggesting increased group mobility and intensified use of the region during drier periods. adjedbebe is a large sandstone rockshelter located on Pandanus spiralis endocarp (the tough ‘nutshell’ of the pandanus Mirarr country in the Alligator Rivers region, northern drupe, comprised of sclerenchyma tissue; Extended Data Fig. 1). While the variations of tidal range are large and fairly well known across Australia (less than 1 m near Perth but more than 14 m in King Sound), the properties of the tidal currents are not. We describe a new regional model of Australian 10 tides and assess it against a validation dataset comprising tidal height and velocity constituents at 615 tide gauge sites and 95 current meter sites. The model is a barotropic implementation of COMPAS, an unstructured-grid primitive-equation model that is forced at the open boundaries by TPXO9v1. The Mean Absolute value of the Error (MAE) of the modelled M2 height amplitude is 8.8 cm, or 12 % of the 73 cm mean observed amplitude. The MAE of phase (10°), however, is significant, so the M2 Mean Magnitude of Vector Error (MMVE, 18.2 cm) is significantly greater. The Root Sum Square over the 8 major 15 constituents is 26% of the observed amplitude.. We conclude that while the model has skill at height in all regions, there is definitely room for improvement (especially at some specific locations).

Taçon, Duncan Wright, Melissa Marshall, Joakim Goldhahn and Inés Domingo Sanz Introduction The western Arnhem Land site of Madjedbebe – a site hitherto erroneously named Malakunanja II in scientific and popular literature but identified as Madjedbebe by senior Mirarr Traditional Owners – is widely recognised as one of Australia’s oldest dated human occupation sites (Roberts et al. 1990a:153, 1998; Allen and O’Connell 2014; Clarkson et al. 2017). Yet little is known of its extensive body of rock art. The comparative lack of interest in rock art by many archaeologists in Australia during the 1960s into the early 1990s meant that rock art was often overlooked or used simply to illustrate the ‘real’ archaeology of, for example, stone artefact studies. As Hays-Gilpen (2004:1) suggests, rock art was viewed as ‘intractable to scientific research, especially under the science-focused “new archaeology” and “processual archaeology” paradigms of the 1960s through the early 1980s’. Today, things have changed somewhat, and it is no longer essential to justify why rock art has relevance to wider archaeological studies. That said, archaeologists continued to struggle to connect the archaeological record above and below ground at sites such as Madjedbebe. For instance, at this site, Roberts et al. (1990a:153) recovered more than 1500 artefacts from the lowest occupation levels, including ‘silcrete flakes, pieces of dolerite and ground haematite, red and yellow ochres, a grindstone and a large number of amorphous artefacts made of quartzite and white quartz’. The presence of ground haematite and ochres in the lowest deposits certainly confirms the use of pigment by the early, Pleistocene inhabitants of this site.

The past 70 years have witnessed considerable high-quality study of both the island's archaeology' and its ethnology,2 but it has become increasingly evident that to explore fully Formosa's position in the culture history of the Far East it is imperative also to enlist the disciplines of linguistics, ethnobiology, and the environmental sciences.3 It is with this aim that preliminary and exploratory in- vestigations were carried out in Formosa under the auspices of the Department of Anthropology of Yale University, in collaboration with the Departments of Biology at Yale, and of Archaeology-Anthropology and Geology at National Taiwan Uni- versity (Taipei, Taiwan), during 1964-65. As a result of these investigations, pre- historic cultures can now be formulated on the basis of excavated material, and be placed in a firm chronology, grounded on stratigraphic and carbon-14 evidence. This prehistoric chronology, moreover, can be related to environmental changes during the postglacial period, established by geological and palaeobiological data. Comparison of the new information with prehistoric culture histories in the ad- joining areas in Southeast China, the Ryukyus, and Southeast Asia throws light on problems of cultural origins and contacts in the Western Pacific region, and suggests ways in which to utilize Dyen's recent linguistic work,4 as well as current ethnologi- cal research.

Grey Abstract.—Solenocera australiana, new species, a close ally of S. halli and S. melantho, is described from material collected in shallow water, 15 to 24 m, off the Northern Territory, Australia. This species is characterized by the antennular flagella which gradually narrow distally toward the 2 or 3 distalmost articles; the roughly lanceolate distal part of the dorsolateral lobules of the petasma which are supported by submesial ribs; and the presence of two pairs of thelycal protuberances on the anterior part of ster- nite XIV, the mesial one usually considerably larger than the lateral, as well as by the straight anterior border of the thoracic ridge. In July 1972, during routine fishery monitoring by the staff of the Fisheries Division, Department of Primary Production, Darwin, a collection of shrimps of the genus Solenocera was taken from commercial grounds north of Groote Eylandt in the western Gulf of Carpentaria. Since that time ad- ditional specimens have been obtained during the course of sampling of penaeid shrimps by fishery research vessels in waters adjacent to the North- ern Territory, mostly in Van Diemen Gulf, but also in other localities off this province by commercial trawlers. Van Diemen Gulf has not attracted significant commercial fishing for pe- naeid shrimps—the only members of the superfamily Penaeoidea that at present are economically important in northern Australia—and to make a preliminary evaluation of its potential as a fishery, a series of brief surveys were made between May 1977 and February 1978.

    Bell Beaker resilience? The 4.2ka BP event and its implications for environments and societies in Northwest Europe Jos Kleijne, Mara Weinelt, Johannes Müller Abstract This paper deals with the Bell Beaker phenomenon in Northwest Europe, and the question of its development around 2200 BC, in relation to the well-known 4.2ka climatic event. The duration of settlement occupation and the subsistence economy are the variables used in this study to address this resilience on a regional scale. Concluding, we state that regional variability exists in the ways in which communities were impacted by the 4.2ka event. In addition to agricultural intensification, the flexibility of subsistence strategies seems to have played an important role. Keywords Resilience; Bell Beaker; Northwest Europe; Settlement; Subsistence Introduction From 2600 BC onwards, Western and Central Europe are characterised by what archaeologists have historically labelled as “the Bell Beaker phenomenon” (e.g. Vander Linden 2013). In various parts of Europe, especially the Iberian Peninsula, the end of this phenomenon is often considered to date around 2200 BC, with the rise of the El Argar civilisation in the Southeast of the Peninsula, associated with significant changes in social organisation, settlement structure and food economy (Lull et al 2015). The role of climate in the demise of the Bell Beaker phenomenon, and the resilience and vulnerability of prehistoric communities, is currently being debated (e.g. Blanco-Gonzalez et al 2018; Hinz et al in press). Specifically, an abrupt climatic event around 2200 BC, commonly known as ‘the 4.2ka event’, has a well attested influence on human society in other parts of the world.

These functions are supported by existing services and infrastructure. All this occurs within a landscape framework. It is recognised that the landscape development of the site is a significant factor in establishing a distinct character that reflects the overall development philosophy and objectives as described in the Masterplan. The landscape masterplan prepared by Greening Australia in 2005 established a landscape approach ‘that incorporates and builds on the strengths of the Rapid Creek catchment’s unique plant communities that include riparian monsoon forest, eucalypt woodland, melaleuca swamps and wetlands”. The resultant landscape deliberately introduces international and national visitors to the beauty and diversity of the Top End environment and associated flora. In order to provide clear direction to future works within the precinct, it has been recognised that a ‘kit of part’ comprising distinct landscape treatments is required.

    Human evolution and migrations Neanderthals and dental hygiene (March 2017) Teeth are the most likely parts of skeletons to survive for long periods because of their armour by a layer of enamel made of hydroxyapatite (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)). Dental enamel is the hardest material in the bodies of vertebrate animals and lies midway between fluorite and feldspar on Moh’s scale of hardness (value 5). Like the mineral apatite, teeth survive abrasion, comminution and dissolution for long periods in the surface environment. Subdivision of fossil hominin species and even among different groups of living humans relies to a marked extent on the morphology of their teeth’s biting and chewing surface. Although there are intriguing examples in Neolithic jawbones of dental cavities having been filled it is rather lack of attention to teeth that characterises hominin fossils. As well as horrifying signs of mandibular erosion due to massive root abscesses, a great many hominin remains carry large accumulations of dental plaque or calculus made of mineralised biofilm laid down by oral bacteria. Even assiduous brushing only delays the build up. Grisly as this inevitability might seem, plaque is an excellent means of preserving not only the bacteria but traces of what an individual ate. As fossil DNA is a guide to ancestry and relatedness among fossil hominins, so far going back to about 430 ka in the case of a Spanish Homo heidelburgensis, plaque potentially may reveal details of diet and to some extent social behaviour elaborating beyond the possibilities presented by carbon isotopes and dental wear patterns. Plaque deposits have already shown that Neanderthals had a very varied vegetable diet (see Neanderthal diet, gait and ornamentation March 2011) and that they cooked their food, the sugars thereby released encouraging bacterial biofilms.
