During the Phase 1 of the project in July 2012, two experts established a technical team, reviewed the current situation regarding the small scale processing and marketing of fish in Liberia, consulted with key stakeholders including the Bureau of National Fisheries and the Liberian Artisanal Fishermen’s Association, and conducted a training needs assessment exercise, which included group interviews in four communities and a personal interview survey of 44 female fish processors and vendors. On the basis of the findings of Phase 1 the consultants proposed the detailed design of a train the trainers’ course to be held in Phase 2 of the project. In Phase 2 of the project, the consultants designed and printed two training handbooks, one concerning fish handling and quality control, and the other concerning business and financial management for small scale fishery businesses.
