How does it work? Pennies have a copper coating. As the copper gets older, it reacts with the oxygen in the air and begins to form a copper-oxygen compound. This compound is what makes the penny look dull. Meanwhile, cola contains phosphoric acid. This acid breaks down the copper-oxygen compound chemical bonds allowing a fresh, unoxidized layer of copper to be exposed.

Extra Special Homemade Scones Change it up! Ingredients Enhance the basic recipe on the 350g self-raising flour, plus more for dusting left by adding 100g of sultanas or ¼ teaspoon salt 50g of chopped glacé cherries for 1 teaspoon baking powder an extra special fruit scone. 85g butter, cut into cubes 3 tablespoons caster sugar Create a delicious savoury scone 175ml milk by omitting the sugar and adding 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 150g of grated mature cheddar 1 beaten egg cheese. Jam and clotted cream to serve

Method 1. Heat oven to 220C or gas mark 7. 2. Tip self-raising flour into a large bowl with salt and baking powder, then mix. 3. Add butter cubes, then rub in with your fingers until the mix looks like fine crumbs then stir in the caster sugar. 4. Add vanilla extract to the milk. Make a well in the dry mix, then add the liquid and mix thoroughly to form a wet dough. 5. Scatter some flour onto the work surface and tip the dough out. Dredge the dough and your hands with a little more flour, then fold the dough over 2-3 times until it’s a little smoother. Pat into a round about 4cm deep. 6. Take a 5cm cutter (smooth-edged cutters tend to cut more cleanly, giving a better rise) and dip it into some flour. Plunge into the dough, then repeat until you have four scones. You may need to press what’s left of the dough back into a round to cut out another four. 7. Brush the tops with a beaten egg, then carefully place onto the baking tray. 8. Bake for approximately 20 minutes until risen and golden on the top. 9. Eat just warm or cold on the day of baking, generously topped with jam and clotted cream. Geography Challenge: Make a Flag In earlier centuries people decorated spears which showed their cultural symbols and later they used ribbons, leather or silk decorations on spears and banners to distinguish their group from another. Early explorers put crosses or sculptures up when they landed on unknown land, but later they used flags to proclaim their presence or show the sovereignty. The first flags were flown in the 18th century to ‘proclaim possession’ over the people and land.

Flags demonstrate that we belong to a community, organisation or nation and that we share beliefs, goals, rules and regulations. Flags are national symbols and every country has a specific flag to represent their nation. Many countries use symbols to reflect their country too; for example, both Japan and Argentina use the Sun to reflect unity and energy, and countries including USA, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil adopt stars in their national flag. In ancient times, the cross symbolized the different points of the compass, but in the 4th century the cross was taken as the symbol of faith and this has been adopted by England, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland.

Country flags are designed to represent the history or ideals of a country so here’s a creative challenge for you to design a personal flag that represents you. You can model it on your heritage, favourite activities, sports, animals, or family. Use the template below and let your imagination run riot. You don’t have to restrict yourself to pens or paint either; what could you use to make your flag? For example, could you use recycled materials such as plastic bottles, cereal boxes or foil, or maybe you could use fabric? Just look at this great example! Hello!

Welcome back to the twelfth instalment of ‘Album of the Week’.

Self Isolation Album #12 ‘Back to Black’ by ‘Amy Winehouse’ (2006)

Well my stint venturing outside was short lived, I’m now back in the comfort of my musical bunker… systematically working my way through my entire CD collection. Whilst rifling through the vast array of albums I stumbled across this gem.

Amy Winehouse was, in my opinion, a real pop star. She had everything; the voice, the songs, an original image/style and a vulnerable likability. She was so unique, fusing a classic soulful sound with contemporary lyrical themes. It’s such a shame the world lost yet another talent so young, Amy being tragically another name on the ’27 list’.

I remember living in London when this album came out. A massive illuminated billboard of the front cover shone across Shepherds Bush Green and in through the window of my small flat. Such a seminal pop album. I love the nostalgia it evokes.

Facts:

1. This album was co-produced by Mark Ronson. 2. This album was the catalyst to popularise British female soul acts (like Adele, Duffy and Estelle). 3. Over 4 million copies of this album have been sold worldwide (making it the UK’s 13th best-selling album of all time). 4. Amy has a writing credit on every track - not many current pop stars can boast that!

Can you name the Sports Stars? Are you a true sports fan? Can you identify the tall sports stars in these four photos? The answers to last week’s Sports Stars Quiz were Lance Armstrong, Tyson Gay, Barry Bonds and Adrian Mutu, who all have something in common. It’s not something to be proud of however, as they were all found guilty of using performance enhancing drugs! How many did you get right?
