These awards were given by the Airports Council International (ACI) for 2015. Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is managed by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) — is a three-way joint venture led by GMR group. Delhi airport retained the world’s number 1 position for the second consecutive year in 25-40 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) category. The two other awards were for best airport by size & region — Asia Pacific (25-40 MPPA) and second best airport by region (Asia Pacific). Eminent poet Dr Bhagwati Lal Vyas was chosen for the 2015 Bihari Puraskar for his anthology of Rajasthani poems 'Katha Sun Aawe Hai Sabad'. Instituted by the K K Birla Foundation in 1991, Bihari Puraskar is given annually for an outstanding literary work in Hindi or Rajasthani published during last 10 years by a Rajasthani writer. Apart from original residents of Rajasthan, it is open to those living in the state for the last seven years or more. The award carries a cash prize of Rs one lakh, a citation and a plaque. Three British professors, Richard Morris, Tim Bliss and Graham Collingridge, won the Brain Prize, dubbed as “the Nobel Prize of neuroscience”, for discovering the secrets of how memories are formed in the brain. It is bestowed upon one or more scientists who have distinguished themselves by an outstanding contribution to European neuroscience and who are still active in research. Veteran actor Manoj Kumar, best known for his patriotic films Purab Aur Paschim, Upkar and Kranti, was selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke award 2015 for his contribution to the film industry. The actor became the 47th recipient of the award, the highest recognition in Indian cinema, which consists of a golden lotus, a cash prize of Rs 10 lakhs and a shawl. He initially started as a romantic hero following his debut in 1960 with Kaanch Ki Gudia but later shifted focus to acting and directing films with patriotic themes so much so that fans started calling him ‘Bharat Kumar’. Kumar won National Award for Upkaar and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1992. Renowned Dogri poetess and writer Padma Sachdev was awarded the prestigious Krutitava Smagra Samman for the year 2015 for her outstanding contribution in literature and great service to Dogri Language. Veteran playwright and director Ratan Thiyam was selected for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award 2016 at the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META). Charutar Arogya Mandal Chairman Dr Amrita Patel was decorated with the Mahindra Samriddi India Agri Lifetime Achievement Aear-Krishi Shiromani Samman. Dr Patel is a former Chairman of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). Dr Patel had played a pivotal role in the implementation of Operation Flood, the largest developmental programme in the world . The programme helped to promote, finance and deliver a variety of supporting services to a national cooperative dairy structure that transformed the lives of millions of marginalised and small farmers and milk producers. The Mahindra Samriddi India Agri Awards were instituted by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Farm Equipment Sector .The lifetime achievement award is presented to a renowned personality in the agri space whose contribution is recognized at national and international levels. The awards are a platform to share best practices in agriculture for a larger community benefit. British mathematician Andrew Wiles was named as the winner of the Abel Prize for 2016 for his contributions to mathematical sciences. The Abel prize has been awarded annually since 2003 in memory of the Norwegian mathematics genius Niels Henrik Abel. 2 The Assassin bagged 8 awards in different categories in the 2016 Asian film Awards. It is a 2015 martial arts film based on story of highly trained female assassin and is directed by Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Reputed Telugu playback singer P. Susheela Mohan created a new world record for singing highest number of songs, and was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for singing most number of songs in Indian languages. P.R. Sreejesh and Deepika walked away with the Player of the Year honours at the second Hockey India Annual Awards ceremony for 2015. Late Capt. Shankar Laxman was posthumously chosen for the Lifetime Achievement Award, which carried a purse of Rs. 30 lakh. Capt. Laxman, a goalkeeper, was part of the Olympic medal-winning teams of 1956 (Melbourne, gold), 1960 (Rome, silver), and 1964 (Tokyo, gold). Total prize money handed out was in excess of Rs. 2 crore, including a sum of Rs.1 lakh each given to members of the women’s team that qualified for Rio 2016. Tikka Shatrujit Singh, the royal scion of Kapurthala’s Ahluwalia dynasty, was conferred with the prestigious Knight of the Legion of Honour for his “extraordinary work in the exchanging the French lifestyle and Indian culture with each other.” French ambassador to India Francois Richier bestowed the honour on the 54-year-old Singh. The 63rd National Film Awards (2015) were announced on 28 March 2016. Some of the awards are as under:- Best Feature Film : Baahubali-The Beginning (Tamil, Telugu) directed by S. S. Rajamouli Best Popular film providing wholesome entertainment : Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Hindi) directed by Kabir Khan. Best Actor: Amitabh Bachchan (Piku). Best Actress: Kangana Ranaut (Tanu Weds Manu Returns). Best Direction: Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Bajirao Mastani). 3 Best Film on Social Issues: Niranayakam (Malayalam) directed by V. K. Prakash. Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration: Nanak Shah Fakir (Punjabi) directed by Sartaj Singh Pannu. An Indian-origin student was awarded the inaugural Noor Inayat Khan Prize consisting of 1,000 pounds for a dissertation which was in “keeping with the spirit” of the famous World War II heroine. Geetakshi Arora of SOAS South Asia Institute won the first Noor Inayat Khan Prize. The prize which consists of 1,000 pounds and a certificate -- is for a dissertation which is in keeping with the spirit of Noor Inayat Khan, a descendant of Tipu Sultan. Union urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu was conferred with the Skoch Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to inclusive growth and towards poverty alleviation in India. In a first, Panagarh airbase was renamed as Air Force Station Arjan Singh after the former Indian Air Force chief, on the occasion of 97th birthday of Arjan Singh, Marshal of the Indian Air Force. Panagarh, approximately 150 kms from Kolkata, is located in Burdwan district. The airbase in Panagarh was constructed in 1944 during the Second World War. Air Force Station, Panagarh, post the Second World War, played a significant role in the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan. Singh was the IAF chief from August 1964-69. He was the first Indian Air Chief to be elevated to the rank of Air Chief Marshal on January 16, 1966. Mother Teresa was posthumously conferred with the UK’s prestigious Founders Award this year which is given to recognise and reward exemplary achievements of people within the global Asian community. Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan won the ‘Global Indian of the Year’ award. Besides Aishwarya, noted tennis player Sania Mirza was also honoured at the NRI of the Year Award 2016. Altogether 17 individuals were given the awards under different categories like — entrepreneur, professional, academics, arts & culture, philanthropy, special jury award, global icon of the year and India’s global icon award. The NRI of the Year Award recognises outstanding achievements of the Indian diaspora globally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Saudi Arabia's highest civilian honour- the King Abdulaziz Sash. Former army chief Gen. (retd) JJ Singh was conferred with the highest French civilian distinction, Officer of the Legion of Honour. Singh was chosen for the honour in recognition of his "stellar role" in modernising the Indian Army and initiating robust exchanges between the Indian and French armies leading to "unprecedented" levels of cooperation and inter- operability and creation of enduring ties and promotion of mutual understanding between the two countries. 'Officier de l'Ordre national de la Legion d'Honneur' is the highest civilian award given by the French Republic for outstanding service to France, regardless of the nationality of the recipients. Singh was commissioned into the 9th Maratha Light Infantry in August 1964. In January 2005, he assumed the office of Chief of Army Staff. In 2007, he also held the appointment of Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee of the three forces. After his retirement in September 2007, Singh served as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh from 2008 to 2013.

    AUGUST EDITION AUGUST A message from class eleven-: After returning from the summer vacation, there has been a lot of enthusiasm among the class elevens as well as in the other classes too. The soccer season, the most exhilarating sports season of the year has also arrived. Not being able to reach the semi-finals of the Jackie Tournament was disappointing for us, but we must under- stand that one must learn from one’s mistakes and move on. After the Board results, we heaved sighs of relief and geared our- selves for an exciting new term. There are a lot of new faces in class and it is fun making new friends. Interacting with new people helps us to learn a lot more whether it is about a new country or the interests, hobbies and general views of another individual. Everyone is very excited about the upcoming House plays even though our first terminal examinations are round the corner. We have started pre- paring for them and hope to score good marks. Pakistan passes long-awaited anti-honour killing and anti-rape legislations Pakistan Parliament in a joint sitting on 6 October 2016 unanimously passed two bills, one seeking to curb murders in the name of honour and the other to punish rapists by use of modern technology of DNA testing in probes involving rape cases. The two bills are titled as, Criminal law amendment (offences in the name or on the pretext of honour) bill, 2016 and Anti-rape (criminal laws amendment) bill, 2016. The anti-honour killing bill states, relatives of the victim will be able to pardon the killer if he/she is awarded capital punishment; however, the culprit will have to face mandatory life sentence (25 years). 3. World Post Day: 9th October World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern.
