LADY RAMS COMPLETE THE “D OUBLE ”

The 2008 season was an historic one for the Texas Wesleyan University

women’s soccer program. The team won its third Red River Athletic

Conference Championship and became the first team to win both the

RRAC Regular Season and Touranment titles. The Lady Rams set a school

record with eight shutouts on their way to the program’s first appearance

in the NAIA National Tournament.

The Lady Rams started 3-1 before suffering narrow losses against

Oklahoma City and Angelo State. When conference play began, the Lady

Rams proved ready, ripping off four straight shutout wins before falling 2-0

to Northwood. They would take the regular season championship at 6-1,

having allowed just three goals in conference play.

As the top seed in the RRAC Touranent, the Rams upended fourth seeded

Texas College 4-0 in the semifinals. In the championship game,

Northwood took an early 1-0 lead before senior Brianna McKernon

scored on a free kick from 30 yards out in the 41st minute. In the 75th

minute freshman Diana Lopez scored on an assist from junior Jaimie

Romaguera to seal the 2-1 win. McKernon who tied the Texas Wesleyan

career record with 22 assists, and O’Brien were named the Tournaments

Offensive and Defensive MVP’s.

With their conference championship the Rams earned a bid to the NAIA

National Championship Opening Round. They traveled to Riverside, CA,

to take on seventh seeded Cal Baptist. The Lancers rode two first-half

goals to a 2-0 win.

Seven Lady Rams were named All-Conference, including six first team

selections. Alejandra Barrera, McKernon, Christina Zimmerman, Stefanie

Blowers, Kacee Harris, and Brittany O’Brien were all named to the first

team, while Dominique Harrison was a 2nd-team selection.

Josh Gibbs was named RRAC and South Region Coach of the Year.

Barrera was named RRAC Co-Player of the Year, and O’Brien was named

RRAC Defensive Player of the Year, Honorable Mention All-American, and

Texas Wesleyan Female Athlete of the Year. O’Brien finished her career

four school records: 278 career saves, 12 career shutouts, a career 1.27

GAA, and a 1.08 GAA in 2006.

With their first national tournament appearance, the 2008 Rams, led by

seniors Brittany O’Brien, Brianna McKernon, and Stefanie Blowers, raised

the bar at Texas Wesleyan University.
