Crystallizing a Discourse of "Khalijiness": Exclusion and Citizenship in the Arab Gulf States Abstract For many of the Arab Gulf countries, non-national populations constitute the majority of the population, with the discrepancy between the size of the national and non-national populations continuing to grow. It is in this context that the role played by these non-national populations becomes critically important. In my paper, I argue that exclusion of non-national populations from state-sponsored national identities, as manifest through citizenship rights, plays a pivotal role in fostering imagined national identities and communities among the local Arab Gulf citizens. The study considers two cases in particular: the bidoon (stateless) of Kuwait and middle-class Indian migrants in Dubai. -

Nevertheless the present material has its own characteristics and may be convenient to describe some of them in order to make it useful. English Language use within a real context : the teacher should use it all throughout the lessons , adapting it to students level and making sure it is linguistically and cognitively appropiate . Highlighting key vocabulary and using supplementary material , like visual aids (flash cards, word strips, questin cards ) can facilitate the retention of vocabulary. Nevertheless the use of the Mother Tongue can be an effective metacognitive tool to occasionally clarify doubts or bridge information. Constant language revision including vocabulary and interrogative structures is necessary in order to link what students know with what is going to be studied . The same 20 questions will be practiced orally and in a written way all through every unit. Students’ role : this proposal is students centered . Because they are in charge of their own learning they have to assume some responsibilities and there is a specific strategy to promote it. INTRODUCTION Search for Common Ground (SFCG) works with local partners in many countries to find culturally appropriate means of strengthening those societies' capacity to constructively deal with conflicts. SFCG is currently working on conflict prevention, resolution and transformation in Lebanon. Towards this end, SFCG has developed and aired a TV drama called “All of us in the Neighborhood” (Kilna Bil Hayy) that targets children (aged 7-15 years old) and their parents. The TV drama consisting of 13 episodes was aired in spring 2009 on the LBCI TV channel. Pan Arab Research Center (PARC) was commissioned to carry out a comprehensive research program comprising of both Qualitative and Quantitative modules to gain insights and measure the short-term impact of this program on the target audience. The study was carried out after 3-4 months of having aired the TV drama.
