Graduate and professional students from dual-degree programs and non-business disciplines (e.g., law, medicine, public policy, public health) also frequently participate in Campus course offerings. The mission of The Washington Campus is to help create better leaders – more effective executives and entrepreneurs – by giving students a much richer and more practical understanding of the critical interactions of business, public affairs, and public policy. The Washington Campus is a unique organization with a distinctive heritage. It was founded in 1978 by The Honorable Bill Seidman, former chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Resolution Trust Corporation, along with a like-minded group of senior government officials, business leaders, and leading academics. All the founders saw a critical need for both current and future executives to have a better understanding of business and government relations, especially the impact on their organizations and industries, and on the economy and society as a whole. All the Washington Campus’ learning experiences immerse participants in the vibrant political and business environment of Washington, D.C. Students learn directly from leading policy makers and influencers such as current and former members of Congress, Executive branch officials, and regulatory authorities, and also from business leaders such as corporate, industry, and association executives. Faculty also include notable speakers from media, think tanks, embassies, global institutions, and non-governmental organizations. Participants earn academic credits toward their graduate or professional degree from their home institution, certificates, and/or continuing professional education credits. For both U.S. and international students, The Washington Campus’ courses offer an ideal opportunity to learn richly and quickly about the U.S. institutional and business environment, and how it integrates with and relates to the rest of the world. Participation in Campus programs also offers abundant opportunities for distinctive and enriching extracurricular activities in a unique, global destination: Washington, D.C. These courses focus on how to better understand and more effectively manage public affairs and public policy as integral parts of business strategy and operations. Participants in these courses come from a mix of schools. Graduate and professional students from non- business disciplines (e.g., law, public policy, etc.) also are welcome to participate, and usually do so by cross-enrolling in the home institution’s business-school listed course. For each consortium member school, the Campus’ open-enrollment MBA courses typically are regularly-listed electives. These offerings run Monday – Friday and are structured as equivalent to a 3-credit course in terms of preparation, contact hours, and assurances of learning. The Washington Campus’ faculty and staff organize and administer these courses in Washington, D.C., for various consortium member schools. Assurances of learning include required readings, an exam on the final day, and a team project due two weeks after the D.C. residency. A condensed sample agenda is attached. Managing Health Care Policy Using the same basic structure as the general MBA open-enrollment courses, The Washington Campus also offers MBA/Graduate residency courses in Washington, D.C., emphasizing health care policy more specifically. These offerings focus on how to better understand and more effectively manage the complex dynamics of health care policy for those who are involved or interested in the health care sector. As with the more general MBA/Graduate courses, faculty speakers consist primarily of expert practitioners, but with particular emphasis on those who manage, make, and shape health care policy. The credits, contact hours, and course requirements are similar to the regular, general MBA courses, but with readings, topics, and speakers focused more specifically on health care policy. The Campus’ health care policy courses tend to attract even more diverse types of participants. This includes both dual-degree and non-business school graduate and professional students in medicine, public health, law, and public policy, as well as alumni. A condensed sample agenda is attached.
