Present: Senators Murray, Sanders, Brown, Casey, Hagan, Merkley, and Enzi. OPENING STATEMENT OF SENATOR MURRAY Senator MURRAY. This hearing of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee will come to order. I am pleased to be chairing a hearing on this topic, so important to our Nation’s com- petitiveness and long-term economic strength, to ensure that our American workers have the skills to succeed in this new, green economy. First of all, I want to send our warmest wishes to our Chairman, Senator Kennedy, who continues to be a great champion for Amer- ica’s workers. I also want to thank Senator Enzi, our Ranking Member, and Senator Isakson, who I believe will be here and serves as our sub- committee. Both of them have been very strong partners in making sure that our workers have the skills to compete in a global work- force. I also want to welcome our newly confirmed Labor Secretary, Secretary Solis, to the Hill today. I believe this is your first hear- ing, welcome. While it is your first hearing, we have had a lot of conversations already about the challenges facing our workforce as we work to pull ourselves out of this economic recession, so I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to help ensure a strong workforce for America. I also look forward to hearing our second panel of witnesses, who are here with us today. We have several experts from the State of Washington. I am, I must tell you, thrilled to have so many Shoreline Commu- nity College folks represented here. I worked there in my earlier career, I know it’s a great school, and I know they’re committed to preparing students to succeed in the work world. I want to thank all of you for traveling so far to be here as wit- nesses for our committee today. As we look forward to Earth Day, it’s appropriate that we’re here today to talk about how we can re-tool our workforce for the green economy. It’s going to take a skilled, green workforce to free our Nation from dependence on foreign oil, and build a stronger and more sustainable economic future. From solar panel installation, to green building to retrofitting our homes and offices, the jobs of tomorrow start with increased training efforts today. Not only will it help us all to be more energy efficient, it can help our communities and our working families re- build for a stronger and more sustainable economic future. The debate about what, exactly, constitutes green energy is com- plex. We’ll look to our colleagues on the committees on Energy and Natural Resources and Environment

Many owe gratitude to our university system. As a Cornell graduate much of my gratitude is focused on service to common citizens. Deployment of education, individually or collectively, for the primary purpose of “success oriented” self- aggrandizement is unethical. Such behavior leads to individual pusillanimity and inveracity. This in-turn leads to social discord and potentially national collapse. Many are concerned that academia, particularly the so-called elite academia, has ignored or even encouraged this improper deployment. I am familiar with the common citizens of the heartland including Nebraska; it is well known that self-aggrandizement is not intrinsic to their values. It is in this context, among others, that I request the subject.
