Two Day’s Intensive Workshop Conducted in Junbesi
A two-day intensive participatory planning workshop was conducted at Junbesi High School on the 4th and 5th of April with local stakeholders. The main aim of the workshop was to prepare a long-
term management plan for Junbesi School in an effort to impart quality education to the future
students and find out the ways and strategies for the sustainable management and the
development of the school. A total of 36 participants took part in the workshop. The mayor of Solu
Dudhkunda Municipality, Mr. Namgyal Jangbu Sherpa also attended the opening session. Junbesi
School Management Committee organised the workshop with the technical support from Himalayan Trust Nepal.

Khumbu Visit with the Summit Challenge Team
Himalayan Trust Nepal CEO, Dr. Mingma Norbu Sherpa, visited Khumbu with the Summit th rd Challenge team of New Zealand from the 26 of April to the 3 of May 2019. They trekked from
Lukla to Everest Base Camp. They visited Namche and Khumjung School, where they attended
the cultural reception and then visited Kunde Hospital and observed the hospital. Dr. Kami Temba Sherpa briefed about the Kunde Hospital background and progress and invited all
guests for a dinner reception.

Child-friendly Furniture and Teaching Materials Distributed
The child-friendly furniture of Khumjung School was transported to Phaplu on the 4th of May and
thereafter was airlifted to Syangboche on the 13th of May 2019. Along with the furniture, the
teaching materials of Khumjung School and its feeder schools were also airlifted to Syangboche.
The furniture and stationery materials were handed over to the respective head teachers of the
schools.
Similarly, teaching materials for the Solu region were transported to Phaplu and were handed over
to the head teachers of the schools by Himalayan Trust teacher trainer Mr. Bishnu Rayamajhi. He
also travelled to Kharikhola and Takshindu and handed over the teaching materials to the head
teacher of Kharikhola School and Takshindu School. The teaching materials for Bung, Sotang and
Chheskam were handed over by our District Coordinator, Mr. Nava Bahadur Bhujel. The teaching
materials for 60 schools were funded by Himalayan Trust New Zealand.

Free Eye Camp Conducted in Kunde Hospital
A free eye camp was organized by Khunde Hospital/Himalayan Trust Nepal with technical support from Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, Kathmandu on the 15th, 16th and 17th of May 2019. More than 800 local people from the Everest region examined their eyes. Pre-screening of potential cataract patients were conducted from Lukla all the way to Thame and Pangboche
by a team of eye specialists. People identified with cataract problems were called to Kunde
Hospital for the surgery. A total of 51 people’s 56 eyes were operated successfully. With their
vision restored, the patients as well as their family members were delighted and expressed their
gratitude to the medical team and organizers.

Dinner Reception Hosted
A dinner reception was hosted by Himalayan Trust Nepal in honour of Rt. Honorable Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and Patron of Himalayan Trust New Zealand. On the
occasion, different cultural dances were performed and speeches were delivered. Nearly 120
guests attended the dinner programme at Hotel Yak & Yeti on the 16th of May 2019. The dinner
reception was attended by many distinguished guests, which included Rt. Honorable Helen Clark
and her husband Mr. Peter Davis, Mr. Chris Carter, former education minister of New Zealand, Ms.
Sarah Hillary, Dr. Mike Gill, Diane and John McKinnon, Ms. Sandra Clark, sister of Helen, Ms. Erica
Stone, Mr. Norbu Tenzing, Mr. Bruce Moore, Mr. Mike Dillon, Ambassadors of American, Australian
and German, Mayor of Solu Dudhkunda Municipality, Chairman of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural
Municipality and his team, Chairman of Sagarmatha National Park Buffer Zone Management

Inauguration of Monju Community Hall
A grand opening ceremony of the Monju Community Hall was held at Monju on the 18th of May 2019. Rt.
Honorable Helen Clark, former Prime Minister and Patron of Himalayan Trust New Zealand was the chief guest of the inaugural ceremony. The Deputy Chair of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality, Mrs. Tashi Lhamu
Sherpa along with chairman of Himalayan Trust New Zealand, Dr. Mike Gill and high level delegates from New Zealand were also present. Mr. Pasang Dawa Sherpa, chairperson of Himalayan Trust Nepal handed over the key and certificate of the community hall to Mr. Furtemba Sherpa, chairperson of Yuba Barsha school, Monju. The chief guest handed appreciation certificates to donors, supporters and contractors. Mrs. Ingrid Versen, Chairwoman of Sir Edmund Hillary Stiftung Germany and Mr. Manfred Haupl of HAUSER Exkursionen International were the donors who provided funding for the implementation of the project. Likewise, Mrs. Phurba
Sona Sherpa from The Greater Himalayas Foundation of USA provided additional fund for the furniture.

Khumjung School Management Plan Preparation Workshop Being Held
A two-day-long intensive workshop was being held to formulate a long-term management plan nd rd for Khumjung School from the 22 to 23 May 2019. The workshop was organized by Himalayan
Trust Nepal in collaboration with the Khumjung School Management Committee (KSMC). The main purpose of the workshop was to consult different stakeholders and solicit their ideas for
the preparation of a long-term result based management plan for Khumjung School. The plan
was felt necessary to drive the school management in strategic direction.

Book Launched
A book written by Ms. Lisa Choegyal and photographer Mr. Sujoy Das, “Everest Reflections th on the Solukhumbu” was launched on the 28 of May 2019 at Dwarika’s Hotel in honour of
Sir Ed’s 100 year birthday. The book was officially released by Rt. Honorable Helen Clark in the presence of more than a hundred distinguished guests. The book was published by
Vajra Books.
Himalayan Trust Nepal produced a documentary film about the Himalayan Trust and Sir Ed was screened for the first time. The documentary depicts the work of Himalayan Trust and how it has transformed the lives of the people in the Everest region.

New Board Member Appointed
Mr. Ang Temba Sherpa from Khunde and Mr. Pasang Dawa Sherpa from Khumjung have been

Monitoring Visit to Thame School
th On the 20 of May 2019, Chairman Mr. Pasang Dawa Sherpa, CEO Dr. Mingma Norbu Sherpa, Board Member Mr. Lhakpa Tenji Lama and Education Coordinator Mr. Mahendra Bahadur
Kathet visited Thame Hostel Construction Project site and monitored the ongoing progress of
the project. The team met teachers, parents, field supervisor Dipu Sherpa and Indian intern
Prashanthi and discussed about progress and challenges. Suggestions were provided to the
construction. The project is funded by Thame Sherpa Heritage Fund and American Himalayan
Foundation USA. The hostel is planned to complete by December 2019 and will be occupied from April 2020.

Computer Lab Set Up in Junbesi Secondary School
The computer lab inauguration and handing over programme of Junbesi Secondary School was
undertaken in the presence of Rt. Honorable Helen Clark, former Prime Minister and Patron of
Himalayan Trust New Zealand on 28th of May 2019. The lab was jointly set up by the school
management committee, EduTech Nepal and Himalayan Trust Nepal. The ceremony was attended by more than 250 students, teachers and local communities in the secondary wing of Junbesi school. Junbesi school was first established by Sir Ed in 1963. Currently, the school is attended by more than 150 students. The school will be upgraded to grade 12 and vocational
training will be delivered.

Centenary Magazine Published
Himalayan Trust Nepal published a centenary magazine on the occasion of Sir Edmund Hillary’s 100 year birthday. The magazine features articles and messages of Sir Ed’s family, friends and various authors relaying their short messages and articles dedicated to Sir Ed and his contribution in the Everest region. The Sherpa and non-Sherpa community of Solukhumbu will celebrate Sir
Ed’s birthday with various programmes throughout the year 2019.

SBTTP Review in Schools
Himalayan Trust Nepal has been conducting School Based Teacher Training Programme
(SBTTP) since 2016 with the funding from Himalayan Trust New Zealand in 11 different
schools of Kharikhola, Juving and Takshindu clusters. Education Programme Coordinator,
Mr. Mahendra Bahadur Kathet and Teacher Trainers, Mr. Ishwor Man Rai and Mr. Bishnu
Kumar Rayamajhi conducted review programmes at Kharikhola Secondary School on the 31st May, Juving Secondary School on the 6th and Taksindu Secondary School on the 12th of June 2019. The review was undertaken in active participation of the respective feeder schools. With this, the three-year-long SBTTP will come to an end by July 2019. This review was necessary to assess the effectiveness of the program from the local stakeholders
perspective.

School WaSH Update
The project of School Water supply, gender-friend ly toilet construction and awareness raising
(WaSH) project in Chheskam have been finally completed. Likewise, in Pelmang, the construction of the toilet and drinking water is gradually progressing. 80% progress of the project work has been achieved. The drinking water project at Bung has also progressed by 80%. The software activities such as maintenance training, menstrual hygiene training to raise awareness and orientation programme on personal hygiene have been conducted in Chheskam Secondary School, Sagarmatha Secondary School and Pelmang Basic School. The WaSH project is fully funded and supported by Grand Circle Foundation (GCF) of USA. There is a huge appreciation from the local community to the donor and Himalayan Trust.
