Acoustic monitoring of birds in the vicinity of wind turbines can address this important public policy issue. The identification of nocturnal bird flight calls is also important for various applications such as ornithological studies and acoustic monitoring to prevent the negative effects of wind farms, human made structures and devices on birds. Wind turbines may have negative impact on bird population. Therefore, the development of an acoustic monitoring system is critical for the study of bird behavior. This work can be employed by wildlife biologist for developing mitigation techniques for both on- shore/off-shore wind farm applications and to address bird strike issues at airports. -

In order to determine the impact ofthe human food supply on the Alpine Chough, foraging flock size and distribution were studied in a tourist region in the Northern French Alps between 1988 and 1992. Alpine Chough attendance at tourist sites was closely related to human activities. Activity rhytbrn was influenced by human presence on picnic area in summer. Relations to human activities held at a seasonal scale (such as opening of a ski station) but not at a daily time scale (such as weekend). Accipiters The northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) and the sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus) are the Alaskan representatives of a group of hawks known as accipiters, with short, rounded wings (short in comparison with other hawks) and long tails. The third North American accipiter, the Cooper’s hawk (Accipiter cooperii) is not found in Alaska. Both native species are abundant in the state but not commonly seen, for they spend the majority of their time in wooded habitats. When they do venture out into the open, the accipiters can be recognized easily by their “several flaps and a glide” style of flight. General Description: Adult northern goshawks are bluish- gray on the back, wings, and tail, and pearly gray on the breast and underparts. The dark gray cap is accented by a light gray stripe above the red eye. Like most birds of prey, female goshawks are larger than males. A typical female is 25 inches (65 cm) long, has a wingspread of 45 inches (115 cm) and weighs 2¼ pounds (1020 g) while the average male is 19½ inches (50 cm) in length with a wingspread of 39 inches (100 cm) and weighs 2 pounds (880 g). Adult sharp-shinned hawks have gray backs, wings and tails (males tend to be bluish-gray, while females are browner) with white underparts barred heavily with brownish-orange. They also have red eyes but, unlike goshawks, have no eyestrip. A typical female weighs 6 ounces (170 g), is 13½ inches (35 cm) long with a wingspread of 25 inches (65 cm), while the average male weighs 3½ ounces (100 g), is 10 inches (25 cm) long and has a wingspread of 21 inches (55 cm). -

Scopus 33: 64-69 January 2014 The Kavirondo Escarpment: a previously unrecognized site of high conservation value in Western Kenya James Bradley and David Bradley Summary In western Kenya, extant woodland habitats and their representative bird species are increasingly scarce outside of protected areas. With the assistance of satellite imagery we located several minimally impacted ecosystems on the Kavirondo Escarpment (0°1.7’ S, 34°56.5’ E), which we then visited to examine the vegetation communities and investigate the avifauna. Despite only a limited effort there, we report several new atlas square occurrences, presence of the local and poorly known Rock Cisticola Cisticola emini and a significant range extension for the Stone Partridge Ptilopachus petrosus. Our short visits indicate high avian species richness is associated with the escarpment and we suggest comprehensive biodiversity surveys here are warranted. Introduction The Kavirondo Escarpment in central-west Kenya is a significant geologic and topographic feature. It straddles the equator, extending over 45 km from east to west, and comprises the northern fault line escarpment of the Kavirondo Rift Valley (Baker et al. 1972). Immediately to the south lie the lowlands of the Lake Victoria Basin and Nyando River Valley, and to the north, the high plateau of the western Kenya highlands (Fig. 1). The escarpment slopes range in elevation from 1200–1700 m at the western end to 1500–2000 m in the east, where it gradually merges with the Nandi Hills. Numerous permanent and seasonal drainages on the escarpment greatly increase the extent of land surface and variation in slope gradients, as well as the richness of vegetation communities. -
