Which leads us to The Texas Gallery, 2012 Peden Street, around the corner from the River Oaks Theatre, to see Wegman’s Wei- maraners in Good Dogs on Nice Furniture. Wegman was asked by a young person how do you become an artist. He replied, Get a dog. The form of the animal as well as the dog behavior are both part of the charm of these photographs.

These photographs are elegant in their simplicity. Topper and Flo sitting nicely in the Eames chairs, Wegman is a master with dogs, they behave, no photoshop here. Black Chair, White Background, White Chair, Black Background, the figure is the dog. All of these living room sized pieces are refreshing, perfect summertime fare.

If art were seasonal I’d go looking for the coolest, the most re- freshing, most free with color and open that there are, as Marcel Duchamp would say, the most retinal art for the summer and save the complexity, the art work that demands a lot of mental work and offers depth of meaning for the Fall. Summer’s plea- sure is to please the eye, so the spirit can go Ahhhhh.

Iva Kinnaird’s image of a kiss called “This Much” made directly on the wall using watercolor and lipstick. Hello Project Gallery is an emerging artists space that grew from a storage room in the long time McMurtrey Gallery. They are doing a fund raiser for a new space that they have their eye on, asking folks to support not just the gallery but what they want to become an art center, with studio space for artists and an interest to connect with international artists. The McMurtrey Gallery has just announced that after 35 years in business the owner, Roni McMurtrey is retiring to the sadness of many, what will be one of her last shows we find Jed Feronda. Jed Feronda cuts layers and layers of paper revealing edges of harmonizing or disassociate paper beneath, the overall shapes may be representational, or not. They take on dimension as paper stacks a quarter of an inch thick up the drawings become a bar relief, they offer a visual tickle for the eye. They are small, they are clever, little pieces of visual music. Steve Perrault’s paintings at the Dean Day Gallery have a “I can’t take my eyes off of you” sort of feeling. A hard edge, soft color-abstract realism with nice moments of fresh paint, gradient paint, and mysterious spaces. The artist’s background is theology and philosophy and it would be easy to see these as meditations and a very cool place to relax this summer for both mind and eye to say Ahhhhh.
