Thank you for your patience. — DrG Are you Related or have information to add? The old legend of the Waugh brothers coming to America may have truth to it. Two of the brothers who came to Boston then by ship to Maine and finally settling in Londonderry, NH are appearing to be correct. Parson James McGregor was the leader of that group of settlers. John Waugh is our immigrant ancestor, the other two brothers who left Londonderry and settled further south is still in question. Family Tradition is that we are related to Bishop Waugh but nothing to document that connection has came to light. Details and documentation of their arrival, and settlement in Londonderry, NH is not well documented but more and more material is coming to light. If documentation is found I will post it. This page was originally intended to share information on the Whitley County Branch and has expanded to include links and information on the brothers of John Waugh. We are grateful to our Cousin Mark Rhoades and Margaret McLallen for their work in preserving our Waugh Family Records nearly a century ago. John Waugh — James Waugh — Robert Waugh For a history in Londonderry read about Pastor McGregor at Scotch-Irish in New England GENERATION 1: John Waugh born 1687 Scotland died Sept. 6, 1781. Some records show from Londonderry NH, others show born 28 Apr 1687 Dundee, Angus, Scotland which might make him a son of James and Isobell (Alison) Waugh (no proof of his birth has been documented.) Arrived at Boston 1718, Lived Maine, Londonderry New Hampshire then to South Farms, Litchfield County, Connecticut by 1745. He purchased 50 acres of land south of the Great Pond, now Bantam Lake. He built this house lot and cleared the land for farming with his four sons, Robert, Joseph, Thomas, and Alexander. They kept a constant watch for hostile Indians as the nearest stockade for protection was two and a half miles away in Morris. In 1748 he purchased 100 acres and in 1751 he purchased another 100 acres, owning all the land from his house to Bantam Lake. John Waugh died at South Farms, Morris, Litchfield Co. Connecticut Married Margaret ---- on --- Margaret --- was born 1699/1700 died 15-Feb-1773. Both are buried at Morris, Connecticut Four known and proven children: + Robert Waugh born 1724 + Joseph Waugh born 1726 + Thomas Waugh born 1727 + Alexander Waugh born 1729 From: Layton W. Vick. From a letter written by ROBERT WAUGH of Sangerville, Maryland on 12/26/1922 sent to Mrs. John Husen. This was ultimately received by WILLIAM (BILL) JAMES WAUGH III whom is now deceased then given to me as part of the WAUGH research he was doing. Our WAUGH's came originally from Scotland but previous to that from Normandy or possibly Northern France. In 1688 Parson James McGregor took his flock from Scotland to Londondery, Ireland. Their were several WAUGH's in his flock. In 1718, the Parson and part of his flock set sail to America. With him were 3 WAUGH brothers. ROBERT, our progenitor, JOHN and a third one who's name has been lost. They landed on the coast of Maine and then made their way to Londonderry, New Hampshire. In 1740 JOHN WAUGH moved to Litchfield, Conn. where he died leaving 4 sons, ROBERT, JOSEPH, THOMAS and ALEXANDER. d Thanks — Layton W.
