2000 Billings Land Reclamation Symposium BIG SAGEBRUSH (ARTEMISIA TRIDENTATA) COMMUNITIES - ECOLOGY, IMPORTANCE AND RESTORATION POTENTIAL Stephen B. Monsen and Nancy L. Shaw Abstract Big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) is the most common and widespread sagebrush species in the Intermountain region. Climatic patterns, elevation gradients, soil characteristics and fire are among the factors regulating the distribution of its three major subspecies. Each of these subspecies is considered a topographic climax dominant. Reproductive strategies of big sagebrush subspecies have evolved that favor the development of both regional and localized populations. Sagebrush communities are extremely valuable natural resources. They provide ground cover and soil stability as well as habitat for various ungulates, birds, reptiles and invertebrates. Species composition of these communities is quite complex and includes plants that interface with more arid and more mesic environments. Large areas of big sagebrush rangelands have been altered by destructive grazing, conversion to introduced perennial grasses through artificial seeding and invasion of annual weeds, principally cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.). Dried cheatgrass forms continuous mats of fine fuels that ignite and burn more frequently than native herbs. As a result, extensive tracts of sagebrush between the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains are rapidly being converted to annual grasslands. In some areas recent introductions of perennial weeds are now displacing the annuals. The current weed invasions and their impacts on native ecosystems are recent ecological events of unprecedented magnitude. Restoration of degraded big sagebrush communities and reduction of further losses pose major challenges to land managers. Loss of wildlife habitat and recent invasion of perennial weeds into seedings of introduced species highlight the need to stem losses and restore native vegetation where possible. -

McCown’s Longspur (Rhynchophanes mccownii ) A Species Conservation Assessment for The Nebraska Natural Legacy Project Prepared by Melissa J. Panella Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Wildlife Division November 2012 The mission of the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project is to implement a blueprint for conserving Nebraska’s flora, fauna and natural habitats through the proactive, voluntary conservation actions of partners, communities and individuals. Purpose The primary goal in development of at-risk species conservation assessments is to compile biological and ecological information that may assist conservation practitioners in making decisions regarding the conservation of species of interest. The Nebraska Natural Legacy Project recognizes the McCown’s Longspur ( Rhynchophanes mccownii ) as a Tier I at- risk species. Some general management recommendations are made here regarding the McCown’s Longspur (MCLO); however, conservation practitioners will need to use professional judgment to make specific management decisions based on objectives, location, and a multitude of variables. This resource was designed to share available knowledge of MCLO that will aid in the decision-making process or in identifying research needs for the benefit of the species. Species conservation assessments should not be stagnant documents but rather will need to be updated as new scientific information becomes available. Freshwater Measures for the Northern Great Plains Steppe Ecoregion of Montana Prepared under the Freshwater Initiative Agreement #1410258002-0000 by David M. Stagliano Aquatic Ecologist December 2006 Natural Resource Information System Montana State University Executive Summary Project goals of the Freshwater Ecoregional Measures for the Northern Great Plains Steppe (NGPS) are to: 1) identify and reevaluate the number, diversity and viability of aquatic target occurrences within the Montana portion of the NGPS Ecoregional Plan based on a suite of indicator-based measures set within the aquatic ecological system framework, and 2) determine biodiversity viability measures (for the aquatic ecological system types, or for target species), threat status, and protection of these targets within the portfolio sites of the Ecoregional Plan. Using a combination of field data and GIS data layers, we analyzed the intersection of portfolio sites, 5th code watersheds, target occurrences, and indicator measures (viability, threats, and protection) to form an effective conservation map of selected MT portfolio sites in the NGPS. Overall, 34 of Montana’s 43 native fish species reside within the NGPS ecoregion. Nine of these are MT Species of Special Concern (SOC), one of which is listed Endangered by the USFWS and four are potential species of concern (PSOC). All of these fish species, except one have at least one viable occurrence within MT’s portfolio sites. The 15 types of prairie aquatic ecological systems (8 biological) are well represented within the portfolio, including associated aquatic macroinvertebrate communities with their SOC species. Threats in the portfolio with the broadest scope and severity are agriculture and surface diversions in the watersheds, while the most pervasive moderate level threats are riparian grazing and presence of northern pike, an introduced piscivorous fish. -

BUFFALO HISTORICAL SITES Carnegie Public Library (Johnson County Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum) Built in 1909, this Andrew Carnegie Library was the original location of the Johnson County Library. Andrew Carnegie, a Gilded Age industrialist, believed that education had the power to lift people out of poverty. By the time he died in 1919, Carnegie had donated over $56 million to build 2,509 libraries. Costing $12,500, the building is “Neoclassical” in style, with levels of contrasting color native stone, a porch with two slender Norman-style columns, and an apse on the north side. When the library moved to its current location in the 1980s, the Johnson County Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum acquired the old library building and connected its two buildings with a link in 2006. Alpha Natural Resources Selects Plum Energy To Supply LNG for Eagle Butte Mine Haul Trucks BRISTOL, Va., Sept. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. (NYSE: ANR), announced today that Plum Energy LLC will construct a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on property adjacent to Alpha Coal West Inc.'s Eagle Butte Mine, near Gillette, Wyoming. The Plum Energy facility will supply LNG to Alpha Coal West's mine haul vehicles, producing cost efficiencies and fuel savings for its mining operations. Natural gas becomes LNG when the gas is cooled to more than 260 degrees below zero and the volume becomes 1/600th of the gaseous form, turning the gas into a liquid fuel. LNG is a clean, efficient fuel and is extremely attractive from a price point when compared to the cost of conventional diesel fuel. Alpha Coal West began testing LNG technologies developed by GFS Corp. in trucks at the Belle Ayr Mine in 2012, beginning a pilot program of the world's first LNG-powered mine haul trucks. After 18 months of daily operation, Alpha Coal West decided to proceed with the conversion to LNG of its 16 Caterpillar 793 haul trucks at the nearby Eagle Butte Mine. Alpha Coal West expects the alterations to the trucks, each of which is capable of hauling 240-tons of coal, or the equivalent of two railroad cars, to be completed by the end of 2014. Plum Energy's LNG plant at the Eagle Butte Mine, scheduled to come online in March 2015, will be able to produce 28,500 gallons of LNG a day. -
