Construction officials at New York University find themselves in a similar position. In the last five years, the school has spent hundreds of millions of dollars building every- thing from the $70 million Kimmel Center for University Life to a bumper crop of dormitories. Those efforts were led by Alison Leary, the school’s vice president of facilities and construction manage- ment. Beneath her is a staff that in- cludes 14 construction project man- agers. Time is now increasingly, what they do and even how they do it is driven by costs. “There’s a greater sense of ur- gency in getting projects off the ground, because of the minute-by- minute escalation of costs,” Ms. Leary explains. “That’s a relatively new problem.” To hasten things along, in the past 18 months Ms. Leary has reor- ganized her department.Previously, it was divided up by building and by “client” type, so that one depart- ment would handle construction of administration buildings, another dormitories and a third classrooms. Instead, Ms. Leary set up a cen- tralized office of construction man- agement that handles all capital projects. By focusing more on the big picture and leaving the details up to professionals—architects, engi- neers and construction compa- nies—the department has been able to speed things up. Mitchell L.
