Koch Theater 20 Lincoln Plaza, Columbus Ave. @ W. 63rd St. @nycballet New York City Ballet is one of the foremost dance companies in the world, with a roster of spectacular dancers and an unparalleled repertory. The Compa- ny was founded in 1948 by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein, and it quickly became world-re- nowned for its athletic and contemporary style. Jerome Robbins joined NYCB the following year and, with Balanchine, helped to build the astounding repertory and firmly establish the Company in New York. Following Balanchine’s death, in 1983, Jerome Robbins and Peter Martins were named Co-Ballet Masters in Chief, and since 1990 Mr. Martins has assumed sole responsibility for the Company’s artistic direction. Like Balanchine, Mr. Martins believes that choreographic exploration is what sustains the Company and the art form itself, and NYCB continues to present new work as an ongoing part of its performance seasons. Widely acknowledged for its enduring contri- butions to dance, NYCB is committed to promoting creative excellence and nurturing a new generation of dancers and choreographers. This retrospective features more than 130 objects dating from the artist’s student days, his early years in New York as a com- mercial artist and self-publisher, and the decades of innovation spanning the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s that solidified Warhol’s standing in the history of modern art. Items on display include the only surviving book project from the 1940s; drawings, screen prints, photographs, self-published books, children’s books, photography books, text-based books, unique books, archival material; and his much-sought-after dust jacket designs. @themorganlibrary The Jewish Museum 1109 Fifth Avenue @ 92nd Street - www.thejewishmuseum.org Isaac Mizrahi: An Unruly History is the first museum exhibition to focus on the influential American fashion designer, artist, and entrepreneur. Locat- ed in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brook- lyn, this turn-of-the-century industrial cooperage has been converted into a destination hotel. The architect surgically altered the original structure, peeling back layers to reveal its history and expose the industrial loft character throughout the hotel spaces. The original solid wooden beams, col- umns, and wood ceilings have been exposed, and a rusty old conveyor track left in place as art in situ. These historic elements stand juxtaposed with new interventions, such as radiant-heated concrete floors and a factory-sash window wall facing Manhattan views, to further enhance the industrial aesthetic while maintaining a sleek, minimal effect. An addition atop the original building, a three-story glass “Tetris block” with wrap-around views, is abstract and airy in counterpoint to the mass and solidity of the older brick base. The 72-key hotel contains a 60-seat restaurant, a 3,000 square foot event space with outdoor garden, a rooftop bar and terrace, a 40-seat screening room, and a brick-arched private banquet room.
