Untapped Cities Hard Hat Tour Of Ellis Island, Abandoned Hospital Imagine traveling for weeks by boat to Ellis Island, then, as you gaze at the Statue of Liberty, you are shuffled into the contagious disease ward of the Island’s hospital. This was the reality for roughly 1.25 million people arriving in America. Experience a private, behind the scenes tour of Ellis Island’s abandoned hospital. View Unframed – Ellis Island, an art exhibit by renowned French artist JR on display throughout the hospital complex with installations on 16 interior walls. Visit the laundry building where 3000+ pieces of laundry were washed and sanitized daily, discover the kitchen, autopsy room and other usually off-limits places along with special access inside the original morgue and long abandoned FBI offices. After 1924, the complex served as a psychiatric hospital for soldiers and was later turned into an internment camp for a estimated 8,000 German, Italian, and Japanese Americans during WWII. Abandoned since 1954 a $6 million dollar restoration allowed it to re-open to the public. Box lunch included. Please note: Tour is inaccessible for people using wheelchairs. Closed-toe-shoes are mandatory. Dress appropriately for the weather, as the buildings are not climate controlled. Travel by ferry from Liberty State Park. Thurs, Sept 27, 10:30 am-6:30 pm Fee and Code: $159, XTRVY 262
