CNN International’s new 30 minute travel show, ‘In 24 Hours’ descends on a vibrant city each month to experience a perfect day's down time. From morning until after hours, host James Williams brings viewers unique and exclusive experiences. From New York to Hong Kong, CNN offers its audience the chance to take a look at the world's latest hotspots before they pop into the travel guides. The iconic and sophisticated city of New York is the first featured city in the programme, opening with a flyover of the island of Manhattan via high-end helicopter service, Blade. This service works like Uber—customers are able to order a helicopter with the app and fly anywhere in the city in minutes. Also on ‘In 24 Hours’ each month, a celebrity will provide insider recommendations about each city. In the launch programme, renowned chef Anthony Bourdain reveals his New York secrets and favourite hotspots. NEW INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTERS AND THE GLOBAL ECONOMY: SITES OF CONTESTATION by CHRISTOPHER M. TOULA Under the Direction of Amelia H. Arsenault, PhD ABSTRACT Over the last two decades, a variety of states such as China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, France, South Korea, and Japan have funded 24-hour news stations, called international broadcasters (IB), to frame their policies for foreign publics. While a variety of scholars have acknowledged the proliferation of state-funded media channels, they have also elided key features of IBs. Research in contra-flow theory, strategic narrative theory, and public diplomacy analyze IBs as tools of state power intended to promote state interests, but do not analyze content. Meanwhile, scholars of global media examine IBs as part of the global media system, but omit the broadcaster’s state funding. Building on these complementary but often disparate groups of inquiry into international broadcasting, this dissertation provides this dissertation provides a comparative analysis of the economic coverage of four international broadcasters: Russia Today, China Central Television, Al-Jazeera English, and Deutsche Welle.

Abstract: This dissertation studies the 1994 U.S. intervention in Haiti, focusing on causation (why did Bill Clinton decide to intervene in Haiti?) and consequences (what did the United States and the United Nations achieve from 1994 to 2001?). Regarding U.S. motives, the dissertation argues that economics and ideology played secondary roles in convincing the Clinton administration to intervene in Haiti. Restoring U.S. and presidential credibility; stopping the flow of Haitian refugees; securing the political support of the Congressional Black Caucus; and responding to demands by Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide were the decisive factors. Regarding consequences, the dissertation views the U.S./U.N. occupation as a political and economic failure. U.S. occupation forces, particularly during the first few months following the 1994 intervention, limited themselves to basic law and order, often with the help of former Haitian soldiers.
