Thus far, we have published two thematic issues. In the first issue, we put a spotlight on the oen neglected role of Latin education in the production of literature that is regarded as culturally central. Conversely, in the second issue, we looked at contexts where Latin literature occurs as a marginal phenomenon. In these contexts, Latin literature owes its presence to the enduring centrality of Latin education. In this third issue, thematically entitled “Schools and Authority,” we delve deeper into the mediating role that school authorities—teachers, authors, and commentators—played in the reception of classical authorities. The school curriculum institutionalised during Antiquity bequeathed to the later history of Latin education a number of authorities who were read as models and as handbooks. Thus, not only were texts om Roman and Greek Antiquity a constant presence in the creation of literary texts, they were also an essential part of school curricula. To take this element into account is to gain an enhanced view on the literary reception of classical texts. The interaction between school and literature is not just a matter of transmission, but also of evaluation, negotiation, and transformation. The goals of Latin education were much broader than teaching how to read and write literature. As Rita Copeland states it in her response to the articles gathered in this issue, Latin education “was the foundation on which reception could be built,” but it “encompassed far more than classicism: theology, the production of new literature, new scientific and philosophical thought, and networks of civil bureaucracy and ecclesiastical administration.” It therefore offers a broader ame om which to study the reception of classical literature in European literary history. The three articles in this issue exempli this approach. First, Chrysanthi Demetriou (Open University of Cyprus) looks at the presence of the school author Terence in the plays by the tenth-century playwright Hrotswitha. She opens up a new perspective on this relation by reading through the lens of Donatus’ hugely influential Commentaries on Terence. In particular, she discusses Hrotswitha’s treatment of rape scenes and links it to Donatus’ use of them as an ideal instance for moral instruction. Second, Brian M. Jensen (Stockholm University) discusses the first book ever printed in Sweden, the Dialogus creaturarum moralizatus. With particular reference to fables attributed to Aesop, he shows how the presentation of these fables depends on pedagogical considerations. In the third and last article of this issue, Lucy Jackson (Durham University) studies the Latin school iv Editorial Note play Medea, a translation of Euripides’ play by the sixteenth-century humanist George Buchanan. In Buchanan’s version, Medea becomes more of a rhetorician than a sorceress, thereby holding up a model of Latinity to the schoolboys performing the play. Finally, Rita Copeland (University of Pennsylvania) brings these three papers together in a critical response piece. The discussion focuses on a particular comic motif: rape. Aer the examination of the way Hrotswitha transforms Terentian rapes and incorporates them into her dramatic composition, the paper focuses on a very important spectrum of Terence’s survival: education. Specifically, it explores how rape was read and interpreted by the most important treatise of Terence’s exegesis: the commentary of Donatus. All in all, the paper aims at identiing possible common approaches between the educational and literary sources under examination, while, at the same time, investigates the extent to which the educational context of Terence’s reception affected the literary products that used Terence as their prototype. *** 1 Introduction Terence’s comedies have survived over the centuries not only as literary readings,1 but also as school texts. They were extensively quoted by late antique Latin authors, including Christian Church fathers such as Jerome, who studied Terence’s comedy at school. First (in section 2), I will explore Hrotswitha’s rape incidents in light of Terence’s comedies in order to show that Hrotswitha’s exploitation of rape incidents reflects the canoness’s deep engagement with Terentian drama. More specifically, this analysis strives to demonstrate that Hrotswitha has a firm knowledge of the principles that govern Terentian rapes, while her use of this motif is much more sophisticated than oen noted at first glance.5 Secondly (in section 3), I will investigate the acquaintance of Hrotswitha and her audience with Terentian comedy by focusing on one prominent aspect: education. In this context, I will examine Donatus’ interpretation of Terentian

Born in Stirlingshire. His father died when he was a child, and the mother Agnes brought up 8 children in much reduced circumstances. A very apt boy, he was sent to study at the University of Paris when he was 14. He stayed there until 1522, and in the spring 1525, his name appeared as a pauper student at the university of St Andrews. He went to Paris in 1526 to complete his education and taught there between 1528 and 37. Then he was tutor to one of the sons of King James V, but due to a satire against Cardinal Beaton, his stay in Scotland wasn’t very long. Condemned as a heretic, he fl ed to England and then on to Bordeaux, and later Portugal to teach. The inquisition imprisoned him for his heretical beliefs and it was during this period that he translated the Psalms into Latin. Set free in 1553, he lived in France and Italy and on returning in 1561 was appointed tutor to Mary Queen of Scots, whom he disliked after the murder of Darnley. He was appoint- ed moderator of the Church of Scotland, and between 70-78 he was keeper of the Privy Seal and tutor to young James VI. He pamphleteered against the queen in Ane Detectioun of the Duings of Mary Quene, and held a prominent role in religious affairs until his death in Sept 82.

Inspired by the classical and the biblical traditions, not only this topos has a lyrical and pathetic dimension, but also it is perfectly inserted into the tragic structure of the drama so that its invention contributes to the deep signification of the holy tragedy. Key words: George Buchanan, Jephthes, dream, Latin tragedy, Renaissance theatre During the years 1540 to 1543, when George Buchanan was a Latin teacher in Bordeaux, he created two Latin tragedies for his pupils, Baptistes siue Calumnia and Jephthes siue Votum. Doing so, Buchanan was one of the first European writers who proposed original biblical tragedies made from the pattern of ancient drama.1 The Scottish scholar was inspired by both the pagan tradition of dream accounts and the Biblical and Christian literature when he chose to set on stage, at the beginning of Jephthes, the female character Storge evoking her frightening dream, whereas her husband, Jephtha, the leader of the Hebrews, is at war against the Ammonites, after he uttered a terrible vow which implied - without his knowing – his only daughter, Iphis. At the end of the tragedy, Jephtha will be victorious, but he will have to sacrifice his daughter to God who helped him during the battle.

    The Early Royal Society and Visual Culture Sachiko Kusukawa1 Trinity College, Cambridge [Abstract] Recent studies have fruitfully examined the intersection between early modern science and visual culture by elucidating the functions of images in shaping and disseminating scientific knowledge. Given its rich archival sources, it is possible to extend this line of research in the case of the Royal Society to an examination of attitudes towards images as artefacts –manufactured objects worth commissioning, collecting and studying. Drawing on existing scholarship and material from the Royal Society Archives, I discuss Fellows’ interests in prints, drawings, varnishes, colorants, images made out of unusual materials, and methods of identifying the painter from a painting. Knowledge of production processes of images was important to members of the Royal Society, not only as connoisseurs and collectors, but also as those interested in a Baconian mastery of material processes, including a “history of trades”. Their antiquarian interests led to discussion of painters’ styles, and they gradually developed a visual memorial to an institution through portraits and other visual records. Introduction In the Royal Society Library there is a manuscript (MS/136) entitled “Miniatura or the Art of Lymning” 2 by Edward Norgate (1581-1650), who was keeper of the King’s musical instruments, Windsor Herald, and an art agent for “the collector Earl”, Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel (1586-1646) (Norgate 1997, pp. 1-9). Two versions exist of Norgate’s “Miniatura”, the first of which was 1 written for his friend, Sir Theodore Turquet de Mayerne (1573-1655), and a second, expanded treatise was dedicated to his patron’s son, Henry Frederick Howard, the third Earl of Arundel (1608-1652), also an art connoisseur.

Sabno George Buchanan I s Secular Latin Poetry and New Historicism The 1980s have been a productive decade for Buchanan studies. Spurred on partly by the four hundredth anniversary of his death in 1982, scholars have focused long-overdue attention on the Scottish humanist. Perhaps the two most notable works are I. D. McFarlane's monumental biography, pub­ lished in 1981, and Philip Ford's book, published in 1982, which analyzes Buchanan's poetry and its relation to classical Latin poetry and to the French literary scene in the sixteenth century.! In fact, from 1980 to 1988, the Modem Language Association Bibliography lists no less than thirty-four studies of Buchanan. Compare this with just thirteen articles on Buchanan listed in the preceding twenty-three years from 1957 (the year in which the PMLA Annual Bibliography began regular publication of the Neo-Latin sec­ tion) to 1979.

It is in Judges 11 that we are first introduced to Jephthah, an illegitimate son of Gilead, who is said to be ‘a mighty man of valour’.3 According to the Biblical narrative, Jephthah is appointed by the Israelites to defend their lands against the invading Ammonites who claim the territory originally belonged to them. To focus on the most dramatic part of the story, Jephthah declares that ‘the Lord the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon’ and goes on to win a great victory for the Israelites.4 Yet, this figure is principally remembered within the tradition, not for his victory, but for the reckless vow he makes to secure that triumph. If he is successful in overcoming the Ammonites, Jephthah promises God that he will sacrifice whatever comes to greet him after he returns from the battlefield as a holocaust or ‘burnt offering’.5 For Jephthah, however, this vow has tragic consequences because he returns home to find that the first thing to welcome him is his only daughter: ‘Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have

    REHABILITATING GEORGE BUCHANAN Sybil Jack Introduction In the early eighteenth century George Buchanan was still the subject of much admiration, controversy and scholarship. Thomas Ruddiman (1674- 1757) collected together all the works he could find and published an edition that he hoped would be the last word in scholarship. 1 He was promptly criticised on all sides and a bitter row ensued. 2 This was partly because he sought to update Buchanan's history by bringing it into line with new internationally accepted norms ofhistoriography. 3 Samuel Johnson, an Englishman not well disposed to the Scots, uniformly gave liberal praise to George Buchanan, as a writer saying that he was the only man of genius his country ever produced.4 Even at the end of the century when George Chalmers published a life of Ruddiman with new anecdotes about Buchanan he was still a major figure. 5 His icon in a catholic France by the 18th century was damaged by his heresy and by his treatment of Mary queen of Scots 'his benefactress' and his seditious maxims. But he was generally represented as a man whose talents had made him worthy of a universal esteem.6 In 1906 there were considerable celebrations for the 400th anniversary of Buchanan's birth. In 1982 there was some celebration of the 400 anniversary of his death. I. D. McFarlane biography was published in 1981 for this quarter-centenary. 7 P. J.
