TWENTY YEARS of DISNEY VACATION CLUB® the House of Mouse Has Long Been Home to Celebrated Characters with Insulting Monikers spring2012 • Volume21 • Number1 TWENTY YEARS OF DISNEY VACATION CLUB® The House of Mouse has long been home to celebrated characters with insulting monikers. Names like Dopey, Dumbo and Foulfellow. They aren’t bad. They’re just named that way. (Okay, so Foulfellow’s a little shady.) If that friendly fraternity of negatively named characters has a class clown, it’s got to be Goofy. The artist formerly known as Dippy Dawg is animation’s king of comedy, having amassed a resume of screen credits unlike any other in Hollywood. So to help celebrate the debut of Goofy’s re-imagined Magic Kingdom attraction and to embrace the irreverent spirit of April Fool’s Day, Disney Files Magazine is pleased to dedicate this issue to Max’s dimwitted Dad. A one-on-one interview with Disney Legend and Goofy voice actor Bill Farmer (pages 3-4) begins our appropriately distinguished salute, which continues with a subtle nod to Goofy’s famed series of “How To” animated shorts in the form of a lighthearted guide to making an online reservation at a Disney Vacation Club Resort (pages 5-6). Arguably the most highly anticipated addition to the Member experience since the introduction of the trading pin, this recently launched tool gives new meaning to the notion of Disney magic starting with a mouse. Goofy’s aforementioned Magic Kingdom attraction grabs the spotlight on page 18, delivering the inside scoop about a kid-friendly coaster that now casts our foolhardy friend in the high- flying role of The Great Goofini. A rite of passage for young thrill- seekers since 1996, The Barnstormer returns this spring with its daring new storyline as Storybook Circus emerges as part of the ongoing Fantasyland expansion project. Goofy must be feeling confident about his daredevil act, as he’s already pumping money into one of his overseas homes and will soon ask Guests to help him redecorate (page 22). Add a Goofy-resume retrospective from Disney Heritage columnist Jim Korkis (pages 27-28) and a photographic look at one of Goofy’s earlier Walt Disney World stunts on our back cover, and you have a magazine that, like its staff, is as goofy as it is informative. Born with the gift of comedic gab, Bill turned his ability to channel stars both real and imagined into an illustrious show-business career as a comedian and voice actor. While the Kansas native has voiced a colorful array of animated characters since moving to Hollywood in 1986, none are nearer or dearer to his heart than Goofy. More than providing Goofy’s voice, Bill has long been the character’s soul. From exploring the dim-witted Dad’s emotional depth in the standout filmA Goofy Movie to engaging a new generation of Goofy fans through his Emmy-nominated performances in the hit television series “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” Bill’s immeasurable contributions to one of Disney’s most iconic stars have been recognized with everything from the immortalizing Disney Legend award to the prestigious Friz Freleng Award for Excellence in Animation. As Goofy prepares to star as the Great Goofini in his re-imagined attraction (see page 18),Disney Files Magazine Editor Ryan March sits down for a visit with the legendary funnyman, fresh off the 25th anniversary of his Goofy career. Ryan: While you’ve been doing funny voices since you were eventual move to Hollywood quickly led to an audition that a kid, your career didn’t begin in the world of comedy. would change your life. My Donald Duck impression was pretty much equipment and saw a warning that read, “Caution: Death limited to a single sound and my Mickey was a bit off, but On Contact.” I thought to myself, “Hmmm, I’d better go learn Goofy was right in my wheelhouse, and I got the gig. My life more about this stuff,” and decided to study electronics at the has never been the same since. Elkins Institute in Dallas. sUMMER 2017 • Volume 26 • Number 2 Welcome Home “Son, we’re moving to Oregon.” Hearing these words as a high school freshman in sunny Southern California felt – to a sensitive teenager – like cruel and unusual punishment. Save for an 8-bit Oregon Trail video game that always ended with my player dying of dysentery, I knew nothing of this “Oregon.” As proponents extolled the virtues of Oregon’s picturesque Cascade Mountains, I couldn’t help but mourn the mountains I was leaving behind: Space, Big Thunder and the Matterhorn (to say nothing of Splash, which would open just months after our move). I was determined to be miserable. But soon, like a 1990s Tom Hanks character trying to avoid falling in love with Meg Ryan, I succumbed to the allure of the Pacific Northwest. I learned to ride a lawnmower (not without incident), adopted a pygmy goat and found myself enjoying things called “hikes” (like scenic drives without the car). I rafted white water, ate pink salmon and (at legal age) acquired a taste for lemon wedges in locally produced organic beer. I became an obnoxiously proud Oregonian. So it stands to reason that, as adulthood led me back to Disney by way of Central Florida, I had a special fondness for Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. Inspired by the real grandeur of the Northwest but polished in a way that’s unmistakably Disney, it’s a place that feels perhaps less like the Oregon I knew and more like the Oregon I prefer to remember (while also being much closer to Space Mountain).

  • Our Liberty Dollar Raid Update
Our Liberty Dollar Raid Update Jeff Taylor reason.org November 16, 2007 Updating from the previous post on the topic, the FBI did indeed raid the Liberty Dollar office in Indiana on Wednesday. Documents filed in U.S. District Court in North Carolina indicate that the raid was the culmination of a two-year undercover investigation of Liberty Dollar and its officers. According to an affidavit (PDF) filed by FBI agent Andrew Romagnuolo in support of a federal seizure warrant obtained from a U.S. Magistrate last week, the feds have been investigating Liberty Dollar not just for violating federal bans on circulating alternative currency, but also for mail fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. As for the mysterious connection to the Western District of North Carolina, the document names William Innes of Asheville as a Regional Currency Officer for Liberty Dollar and an executive committee member of the company. Undercover government agents made Asheville a focus of their investigation as a result, attending area meetings of Liberty Dollar prospective buyers and sellers. The affidavit further details Liberty Dollar's structure and terms it a "multi-level marketing scheme." The FBI claims the company realizes a profit by selling the Liberty Dollars into circulation. The feds also went back to October 2002 for bank records of Liberty Dollar principals and cite large sums of cash moving between accounts said to be controlled by those individuals. The document also mentions that the company continued to circulate Liberty Dollars after it had been warned by the US Mint not to do so.

Private Money: if You Were a Merchant, Would You Accept These Coins - June 01, 2006 Albuquerque Journal, By Andrew Webb Private Money: if You Were a Merchant, Would You Accept These Coins? By: Andrew Webb Staff Reporter The Albuquerque Journal - Sunday, June 11 2006 Remember being told as a kid that the United States' currency is backed by stacks of gleaming gold bricks buried in Fort Knox? That hasn't been true since at least 1971. But a small group of New Mexicans are part of a nationwide network of business owners, consumers and money hobbyists who use an 8-year-old private currency, which they say is backed by guarded precious metal in an Idaho warehouse, called the Liberty Dollar. Some call it funny money— indeed, from time to time, news reports circulate about someone being arrested for passing what police initially think are counterfeit coins. Banks won't take them, and most coin dealers dismiss Liberty Dollars as little more than a multilevel marketing scam. But Liberty Dollar backers say they'll have the last laugh when the plummeting value of the U.S. currency leaves unsuspecting Americans holding money whose value is little more than the paper it's printed on. "The federal Constitution states that no state shall use anything but silver or gold in payment or debt, but look where we are today— it's all just paper," says Michael Lunnon, owner and operator of a Gallup-based franchise of The UPS Store, a copy and mailing shop. Lunnon is one of two New Mexico distributors, or regional currency officers, for the Liberty Dollar.

  • Upholding the Disney Utopia Through American Tragedy: a Study of the Walt Disney Company’S Responses to Pearl Harbor and 9/11
Upholding the Disney Utopia Through American Tragedy: A Study of The Walt Disney Company's Responses to Pearl Harbor and 9/11 Lindsay Goddard Senior Thesis presented to the faculty of the American Studies Department at the University of California, Davis March 2021 Abstract Since its founding in October 1923, The Walt Disney Company has en- dured as an influential preserver of fantasy, traditional American values, and folklore. As a company created to entertain the masses, its films often provide a sense of escapism as well as feelings of nostalgia. The company preserves these sentiments by \Disneyfying" danger in its media to shield viewers from harsh realities. Disneyfication is also utilized in the company's responses to cultural shocks and tragedies as it must carefully navigate maintaining its family-friendly reputation, utopian ideals, and financial interests. This paper addresses The Walt Disney Company's responses to two attacks on US soil: the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the attacks on September 11, 200l and examines the similarities and differences between the two. By utilizing interviews from Disney employees, animated film shorts, historical accounts, insignia, government documents, and newspaper articles, this paper analyzes the continuity of Disney's methods of dealing with tragedy by controlling the narrative through Disneyfication, employing patriotic rhetoric, and reiterat- ing the original values that form Disney's utopian image. Disney's respon- siveness to changing social and political climates and use of varying mediums in its reactions to harsh realities contributes to the company's enduring rep- utation and presence in American culture. 1 Introduction A young Walt Disney craftily grabbed some shoe polish and cardboard, donned his father's coat, applied black crepe hair to his chin, and went about his day to his fifth-grade class.
