  • GAUMONT PRESENTS: a CENTURY of FRENCH CINEMA, on View Through April 14, Includes Fifty Programs of Films Made from 1900 to the Present
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release January 1994 GAUNONT PRESENTS: A CENTURY OF FRENCH CINEMA January 28 - April 14, 1994 A retrospective tracing the history of French cinema through films produced by Gaumont, the world's oldest movie studio, opens at The Museum of Modern Art on January 28, 1994. GAUMONT PRESENTS: A CENTURY OF FRENCH CINEMA, on view through April 14, includes fifty programs of films made from 1900 to the present. All of the films are recently restored, and new 35mm prints were struck especially for the exhibition. Virtually all of the sound films feature new English subtitles as well. A selection of Gaumont newsreels [actualites) accompany the films made prior to 1942. The exhibition opens with the American premiere of Bertrand Blier's Un deux trois soleil (1993), starring Marcello Mastroianni and Anouk Grinberg, on Friday, January 28, at 7:30 p.m. A major discovery of the series is the work of Alice Guy-Blache, the film industry's first woman producer and director. She began making films as early as 1896, and in 1906 experimented with sound, using popular singers of the day. Her film Sur la Barricade (1906), about the Paris Commune, is featured in the series. Other important directors whose works are included in the exhibition are among Gaumont's earliest filmmakers: the pioneer animator and master of trick photography Emile Cohl; the surreal comic director Jean Durand; the inventive Louis Feuillade, who went on to make such classic serials as Les Vampires (1915) and Judex (1917), both of which are shown in their entirety; and Leonce Perret, an outstanding early realistic narrative filmmaker.

  • Clouzot E Il Noir Programma W

  • The Reinvention of José Giovanni
o be a fan of film noir is to be a connoisseur of moral ambiguity. The movies may be black and white, but the stories are a swirl of gray: among the shadows, we find ourselves empathizing with criminals, even murderers, and grappling with the irreducible complex- ity of human character and behavior. Or so we like to tell ourselves. In truth, this is easier when the crooks are fictional, and their crimes can be finessed in ways that soothe or Tdistract our consciences. When the facts are real, it is trickier to navigate the boundaries of the forgivable, SECOND the murky no-man’s-land between admiration and moral revulsion, judgment and agnostic tolerance. What prompts this particular reflection is the life of the writer and director José Giovanni, one of the most fas- cinating figures in French cinema. A prolific novelist, screenwriter, and director, he earned his place in the noir pantheon chiefly as the source for three indisputable masterpieces, Le Trou (The Hole, 1960), Classe tous ris- ques (The Big Risk, 1960), and Le deuxième souffle (Second Wind, 1966). His familiarity with the underworld and his status as an ex-con who had done time on death row were well known in his heyday, and lent cred- ibility—not to say glamour—to his chronicles of gangsters and life “inside.” For almost fifty years, Giovanni suc- ceeded in keeping certain facts about his background hidden even as he mined his biography to great acclaim. But, as noir teaches, the past never stays buried. In 1993 two Swiss newspapers, La Tribune de Genève and 24 Heures, published their findings that the crimes for which Giovanni—born Joseph Damiani—had been convicted ranged from collaborationism during the Occupation of France to involvement in kidnapping, extor- tion, and murder.

  • Lino VENTURA

  • “The French Had a Name for It” Brings Film Noir Gems Neglected for a Half-Century to Los Angeles
“THE FRENCH HAD A NAME FOR IT” BRINGS FILM NOIR GEMS NEGLECTED FOR A HALF-CENTURY TO LOS ANGELES Over the eight years that Don Malcolm edited NOIR CITY for Eddie Muller’s Film Noir Foundation, he and a small army of writers worked to expand the notions of what film noir encompassed. And that effort produced essays pinpointing the existence of many notable and forgotten noir films from around the world. Last year (2014), Malcolm went out on his own in order to take these exciting discoveries off the printed page and put them into movie theatres, where cinephiles could engage with them directly. The first result of this effort, a series of twelve French films noir that played at San Francisco’s Roxie Theatre last November, entitled THE FRENCH HAD A NAME FOR IT, created a sensation with turn-away business. “A certain received wisdom about French noir seemed to settle in over the years,” muses Malcolm, “and many of the directors of the films we’re rediscovering were raked over the coals during the ascendancy of the Nouvelle Vague. Those two factors combined to keep them pretty much ‘hidden in plain sight’ for a half-century.” But no longer. Now a slightly revised version of that remarkable festival, one that made San Francisco Chronicle lead film critic Mick LaSalle swoon at their collectively risqué panache (“the experience is like finding gold where you thought was rock”), is coming to the American Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre for four nights beginning Friday, June 19. What’s most amazing—shocking, even—is that many of these films feature big, big names in French cinema history.
