The contributions and accomplishments of these exceptional individuals have greatly enhanced the North Allegheny tradition of excellence. These experiences truly help prepare our students for success in a changing world. My apologies for not being there in person this evening, however I am attending a professional development conference with other superintendents from the region. Thank you all for all that you have done to make the North Allegheny athletic program a model of excellence and a source of pride for everyone in the community. It’s a great day to be a Tiger! Coach Woods was a 1970 NA graduate. He played shortstop on the JV and Varsity baseball teams coached by Bob Miller and Jim McCracken. After attending and graduating from Edinboro State College in 1974, Mark began his 43 years of coaching baseball the following season for the Ingomar Senior League and was asked to join the NA coaching staff in 1981 under the leadership of Bob Lebec. Mark was the Head Coach for Freshmen and JV teams for 27 seasons and served as assistant coach and roving instructor for three years totaling 30 years at NA. Mark is considered by many in the baseball community the driving force and catalyst for the winning tradition of the NA Baseball Program. He created a winning attitude and mindset enriched with player fundamental development and retention in a program suffering with decades of losing seasons and absence from the playoffs since 1956. His first freshman team in 1981 (11-1) participated in the WPIAL playoffs in 1983. This was the first time a NA Baseball team had made the playoffs since 1956. Mark was credited as the underlying force that created the Baseball Boosters in 1985. He organized and hosted the Doyle School of Baseball in 1986 at NA to conduct a weekend clinic for Western PA coaches. Proceeds from this clinic supported the team to attend the Doyle School of Baseball in Winter Haven, Florida that year. Mark was the foundation and building block for successful North Allegheny Varsity teams achieving 25 consecutive years of reaching the baseball WPIAL playoffs (1986-2010) including 14 WPIAL championship games, winning seven and five PIAA Championship Games, winning two. His 9th grade teams were the backbone of Varsity success. Mark introduced 8th graders on the 9th Grade team in 1982, unprecedented in most high schools at the time. Mark had a career record of 384-103-1 for a winning percentage of .789. He was never ejected from a baseball game in 487 high school contests not to mention over 1,500 career games. His team had an undefeated 21-0 Freshman season in 1995 which no NA baseball team had achieved. He coached summer and fall leagues for 43 years with pre-adolescent (Little League), adolescent (Pony League), junior high (Colt League) and varsity level (Palomino) teams. He specializes in pre-adolescent training and instruction for adults conducting community coaches’ clinics over the past 15 years for various district athletic associations. Mark maintains a historical chronological archive collection of the NA Baseball Program from 1970 – 2018. Currently, Mark is an assistant baseball coach at Bethany College. 2018 North Allegheny Athletic Hall of Fame 7 North Allegheny Athletic Hall of Fame The Bob Miller Award for Outstanding Support of North Allegheny Athletics Claudia Steeb 2018 Recipient Claudia A. • Eagles' Team Travel
PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn PHILADELPHIA EAGLES Team History The Eagles have been a Philadelphia institution since their beginning in 1933 when a syndicate headed by the late Bert Bell and Lud Wray purchased the former Frankford Yellowjackets franchise for $2,500. In 1941, a unique swap took place between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh that saw the clubs trade home cities with Alexis Thompson becoming the Eagles owner. In 1943, the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh franchises combined for one season due to the manpower shortage created by World War II. The team was called both Phil-Pitt and the Steagles. Greasy Neale of the Eagles and Walt Kiesling of the Steelers were co-coaches and the team finished 5-4-1. Counting the 1943 season, Neale coached the Eagles for 10 seasons and he led them to their first significant successes in the NFL. Paced by such future Pro Football Hall of Fame members as running back Steve Van Buren, center-linebacker Alex Wojciechowicz, end Pete Pihos and beginning in 1949, center-linebacker Chuck Bednarik, the Eagles dominated the league for six seasons. They finished second in the NFL Eastern division in 1944, 1945 and 1946, won the division title in 1947 and then scored successive shutout victories in the 1948 and 1949 championship games. A rash of injuries ended Philadelphia’s era of domination and, by 1958, the Eagles had fallen to last place in their division. That year, however, saw the start of a rebuilding program by a new coach, Buck Shaw, and the addition of quarterback Norm Van Brocklin in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams.

  • FROM the BENCH Greetings to All Robert Morris University Sport Management Students, Alumni and Friends
The Robert Morris University Sport Management Newsletter Summer 2009 FROM THE BENCH Greetings to all Robert Morris University Sport Management students, alumni and friends. It’s been a busy year and below are a few highlights and thoughts about what has been going on at the university, with Sport Management, as well as the current economic status in the industry. • This past spring the RMU School of Business achieved initial accreditation by AACSB International– The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, joining only 5 percent of business schools worldwide to carry this prestigious recognition. AACSB International is an association of educational institutions, businesses, and other organizations recognized worldwide as the premier accrediting agency of collegiate business schools and accounting programs. This highly coveted recognition represents the peak standard of achievement for business schools; only 560 business schools in the world have achieved AACSB accreditation, and only one-third of business schools in the United States. With Sport Management being housed in the School of Business, this accreditation establishes greater credibility for the education and professional preparation of our students. • With the leadership of Harry Leckemby (SM BSBA 1987), there is now a RMU Sport Management Alumni group on Linkedin. Currently, approximately 100 alumni, faculty and friends of the program have joined this group. This is a great tool for networking, communicating as well as staying in touch with the university. If you use Linkedin and would like to join the network contact Harry at [email protected] or myself at [email protected] . • The economy has seriously impacted the sports and entertainment industry with the loss of sponsorship dollars and a decline in ticket and suite renewal sales –resulting in drastic budget cutbacks along with the layoffs of outstanding sport industry professionals.
