While only the world’s most elite cyclists will get to compete, there are many opportunities for amateur cyclists and community members to get involved in one of Canada’s largest annual professional sporting events. Race organizers are currently seeking volunteers to assist in support roles for the 2014 Tour of Alberta, which travels nearly 700 kilometres through 7 host communities for official stage starts and finishes, and through various pass-through communities along the route. Volunteer- ing with the Tour of Alberta offers individuals the opportunity to be a part of the official race entourage and to observe first-hand how an internationally acclaimed professional sporting event is produced. “Without the support of our volunteers, we would not be able to put on this race and bring the world’s best cyclists to Alberta,” explains Duane Vienneau, Executive Director of the Tour of Alberta. “The world’s eyes are intently watching the province of Alberta for six days, and we are so grateful so for the volunteers last year who assisted behind-the-scenes to make our inaugural event a success.” Volunteers are required to be 18 years of age or older; however, there may be opportunities in some communities for minors and youth groups accompanied by an adult. Applications will be accepted for volunteers until August 30, 2014. The most needed position is the role of Course Marshal, which is crucial for ensuring safety of cyclists and spectators along the route. Other positions are still available, including Volunteer Coordinators at the check-in, individuals interested in festival activations, and hospitality area hosts. Depending on applicants’ interests, there are opportunities to fill other roles, including media operations and television production runners. Interested applicants can register and find more information at tourofalberta.ca/volunteer/sign-up. EDMONTON MARATHON The Edmonton Marathon is looking for experienced cyclists to lead our marathon, half marathon and 10k races. There will be a pre-ride on Saturday, August 23 and all races will be held Sunday morning, August 24. The races start and end at Shaw Conference Centre in downtown Edmonton. Cyclists will receive a complimentary entry into the 2015 Edmonton or Okanagan Marathon.
