The occasion, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel was organised by the Malaysian High Commission in London and was attended by Malaysians living in London. The royal couple are here to attend the opening ceremony of the London Olympics and it is believed that they will also meet the rest of the Malaysian athletes at the Olympic Village. Among those who attended the event were Malaysia's hope to bring a medal back, Datuk Lee Chong Wei, and other members of the badminton squad, cyclists and coaches as well as their managers. Many others stayed behind to train. - NST/Zaharah Othman. Teenager does Malaysia proud NOTTINGHAM June 30: FOR 16-year-old Ahmad Aiman Asmayatim, the few metres that he ran through the streets of Nottingham carrying the Olympic torch on Thursday had taken him leaps and bounds in his record of personal achievements. It will also catapult him in the records of the London Olympics 2012 as the young Malaysian student will be among 8,000 others to carry the torch before the start of the Olympic Games on July 27. - Continued on page two, Aiman carrying the Olympic torch along the streets of Nottingham. Our very own Olympic Torchbearer Continued from page one. The fourth former from Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) in Ipoh, Perak, was chosen to represent Malaysia in carrying the torch under the International Inspiration programme, London 2012's international sports legacy programme. Twenty other youngsters from around the world were also chosen to be torchbearers. "I cannot describe the feeling. It's incredible and something that I will never ever forget," said an excited Aiman when asked to describe the moment he was handed the torch along the scenic canal route in Nottingham on the way to the city centre. The second child in a family of three said he knew about his nomination in March. He had been actively involved in International Inspiration programmes and trained as a young sports leader. He was selected after an interview by the British Council. "It was obvious it was his leadership qualities and his ability to solve problems that he was chosen to represent Malaysia," said Teing Tai Chee, a teacher from SMJK Shing Chung chosen to be Aiman's adult chaperone. In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian 19-year-old diving queen Pandelela Rinong has been chosen to carry the Jalur Gemilang at the London Olympics, the first national female athlete to be accorded the honour. Her selection was officially announced by Malaysian Olympic contingent chef-de-mission Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid after a visit to the badminton squad training centre at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara yesterday. - NST/Zaharah Othman. • Newlv-Paired Mun Yee- Dhabitah Aim to Prove Themselves Veterandiver Leong Mun Yee Is Happy That the Spotlight Is Not on Her
Newlv-paired Mun Yee- Dhabitah aim to prove themselves VETERANdiver Leong Mun Yee is happy that the spotlight is not on her. But that has not stopped the 33-year-old from quietly hoping for a medal of her own in the 10m synchro event when the diving com- petition starts at the Optus Aquatic Centre today. Mun Yee will team up with Nur Dhabitah Sabri but all eyes will be on Olympic silver medallists and World Championships bronze medallist Pandelela Rinong and Cheong [un Hoang to deliver the goods. Mun Yee, who is in her fourth Games appearance, believes she and her 18-year-old partner cannot be overlooked. "Pandelela-Jun Hoang are the focus in the 10m synchro while Dhabitah and I are just the other pair," mused Mun Yee. "Its going to be a tough as all the divers are ranked in the top three. "My partnership with Dhabitah is quite new and this is our first year diving together. "But we are doing the same degree of diffi- culty as the others and are hoping for the best." Mun Yee-Dhabitah will also compete in the 3m springboard synchro today. "It'll be a challenge because the weather here is cold, windy and hot at the same time," said Mun Yee,who has only trained in 3m syn- chro for three months. "I'm excited to get started but I'll keep my focus," she added. The other Malaysians in action today are Ooi Tze Liang, Ahmad Amsyar Azman and Mohd Syafiq Puteh in the men's 1m springboard indi- vidual.
