About a year or so ago I started using Address Book on my iMac. I wasn’t completely happy with it but didn’t have time to work it out - I now have to my satisfaction and would like to share what I found. This application has been renamed as Contacts in the latest release of OSX - my comments below will probably relate to that too but I have not checked it out. The main aspect I had difficulty with was the formatting of telephone numbers. That is, have numbers display with spacing between. If, like me, you get a lot of junk mail, it can help to have visual clues to help identify and get rid of them a little faster. It certainly helps to not have to open them to check. Apple’s Mail program offers an effective junk mail filter which can make it a bit easier. Activate the filter via the Junk Mail icon in Mail Preferences. This will give you a panel of options (figure 1). Figure 2 - switch to ‘automatic’ message Doing this marks messages as junk but moves them to a junk mail folder. Junk messages will be deleted according to the preferences for the mail account, set under the Accounts icon (figure 3). You can see that I’ve chosen to never delete the junk messages, which means I will always have to delete them manually. This allows me to check through them to satisfy myself that a ‘real’ message hasn’t been mistaken for junk. If for some reason you want to reset Mail’s junk filtering, you can use the Reset button in the Junk Mail Preferences. Mail will forget what it’s learnt, and start the learning process from the beginning.

Initially you will want to run in ‘training’ mode, which allows Mail to learn to tell junk mail from ordinary mail, assisted by times when you manually tell it that a message is or is not junk. This is done via a button in Mail. When you click on any message to highlight it, the button changes to allow you to specify whether the selected message is “Junk” or “Not Junk”.
