Director

The Joe Nuxhall Character Education Fund

The son of Red’s Hall of Fame pitcher and long-time broadcaster Joe Nuxhall credited his father for encouraging education in addition to ath- letics.

In 2003, Nuxhall and his father created the Joe Nuxhall Character Edu- cation Fund to underwrite character development programs and projects for children. Our mission is: "To increase the awareness and development of character to create a more respectful society."

The long-running HBO show Real Sports did a piece in 2001, on a ballfield built in Conyers, Ga., for individuals with disabilities. They called it the Miracle League. It started with one field and 120 kids. Now, there are 250 Miracle League organizations in the , Canada, Puerto Rico and Australia.

Kim and his father decided they would build their own Miracle, in Kim’s words. “some day, some- how, some way.’’

Joe didn’t live long enough to see it through. He died at age 79 on Nov. 15, 2007. But the fields were always part of the Old Lefthander’s master plan for doing good. Doing good came naturally to him. His presence in the project is as elemental as a piece of steel.

“To wrap my mind around this is a constant struggle. It’s overwhelmingly hard to process this gratitude,’’ says Kim Nuxhall. He is Joe’s son. He is the caretaker of his father’s legacy, which is at once a beauty and a beast. Tending Joe Nuxhall’s memory is the hardest thing Kim will ever do.

More than $2 million in labor and materials: Three thousand man-hours for the electrical work alone. Two miles of electrical piping, 10 miles of wire. More than 1,400 cubic yards of concrete. A typical house uses 120 yards. Windows and doors and bricks and lights and excavating. All do- nated.

The Joe Nuxhall Miracle Fields opened on July 28, 2012 with family friend and former Red Sean Casey leading his teammates out of an adjacent corn field, signaling the beginning of a true “Field of Dreams” . Joe’s Dream, Kim’s Dream, to help fulfill the dreams of local children to play the game that all dream of playing, as children, as adults, regardless of ability.

Jack Owens Mens Basketball Coach—Miami University Oxford, Ohio Having led Miami to its best performance in seven years, Jack Owens returns for his second season as the head coach of the RedHawks.

Despite being hired in April 2017, Owens quickly showed his recruiting prow- ess by bringing in six new players to join the roster. He led Miami to 16 wins in 2018 and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational. It was the ‘Hawks most victories and first postseason appearance since 2011.

Nike Sibande, one of Owens’ recruits, was named MAC Freshman of the Year and Honorable Men- tion All-MAC. Junior guard Darrian Ringo, who Owens got to transfer in from Eastern Arizona, was Third-Team All-MAC and was the only player in the nation to finish in the top 10 in both assists and steals. Dalonte Brown joined Sibande on the MAC All-Freshmen Team.

The 2018 CBI appearance continues a pattern of success for Owens as his teams have advanced to postseason play in 14 of the past 18 seasons and went on to the NCAA Tournament in 11 of the past 14 years, including four trips to the Sweet 16.

Prior to joining Miami, Owens spent the past nine seasons on staff at Purdue University, three as an assistant coach and the last six as its associate head coach. During his time the Boilermakers rec- orded 209 wins (23.2/year), including 27 during his final year (2016-17 season) to help Purdue win a Big Ten Regular Season Championship.

In Owens’ nine seasons with Purdue, the Boilermakers made the NCAA Tournament on seven oc- casions, advancing to the Sweet 16 three different times.

Owens and his wife, Kamilah, have three daughters, Alanah, Aniyah and Anyah.

The Officers and members of Father Butler Council 968 and the Father Butler Educational Foundation, would like to express our heartfelt condolences and thanks to one of our communi- ty’s and council’s longest supporters and his family. Through- out the years, we would not have been able to put out our Mari- ner publications, and Sports Stag programs without the support of the Pohlman family. Scott Pohlman passed away after a brief illness at Fort Hamil- ton Hospital on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. Scott was a 1976 alumnus of Stephen T. Badin High School. He was employed by Jim's Tire & Auto and worked in the tire business for 44 years. He was also the owner/operator of Strikes at Columbia Lanes. In honor of Scott, his family is now taking over his work at the lanes to bring families and the com- munity together in a welcoming, safe environment. Please continue to pray for Scott, his family and for all our departed brothers and sisters in Christ.

Negro League Baseball pitcher

Hamilton, Ohio

He officiated thousands of minor league softball games in the 1980s and was inducted into the Butler County Softball Hall of Fame as an umpire in 1989. But few know Paul Jones’ history as a Negro League Baseball pitcher who played with such greats as Leroy “Satchel” Paige, Elston Howard and “Sad” Sam Jones..

Jones’ career during the ’40s and ’50s was largely forgotten until recently when he was inducted into the Negro League Baseball Hall of Fame in Birmingham, Ala. Paul Jones remembers his days as a professional baseball player in the Negro American League as if it were yesterday. Jones recalls taking on hall of fame pitcher Satchel Paige, who played in both the Negro League and the majors with Cleveland, St. Louis and Kansas City . One of Jones’ better seasons was in 1950 with the Elmwood Giants when he finished with a 9-10 record and a batting average of .154, according to the book “ManDak League: Haven for Former Negro League Ballplayers,” by Barry Swanton.
