Hamilton County Auditors through History The State Legislature created the office of County Auditor during the 1820-21 legislative session. It was an annually elected position until 1824, when it became a 2-year term. It became a 4-year term in 1924. There have been 30 elected Auditors since the first elected Auditor and two appointed Auditors. Jones was originally from the Pennsylvania Quaker community. He was Auditor in 1825, serving as the First County Auditor. He was also Clerk for the City of Cincinnati in 1829-1831. In 1831, he moved to Illinois and was one of the most instrumental leaders of the Church of Christ. A published biographical sketch says, “His business capacity, habits of industry and acknowledged integrity of character, gave him many positions of honor and trust”. John S. Wallace was described as “one of the earliest settlers of Cincinnati and a resident here until his death”. He was Auditor from 1829-1836. He also served as a Commissioner and Sheriff along with such famous early community leaders as William Henry Harrison, Martin Baum, William Lytle, and John S Gano. -

Solidarity Political Basis of Unity: Suggested Bibliography #4 Independent Political Action In the labor and social movements, we call for political independence and a break from the two-party system. The Democratic and Republican parties are dominated by corporations and merely offer different flavors of pro-war and pro-business policies. These capitalist parties maintain a stranglehold on politics in the United States and offer only dead ends for working class and oppressed people. The Democrats in particular have functioned as a trap for organized labor and as the graveyard of social movements. We argue against engagement in the “lesser evil” approach of working with the Democratic Party, which tends over the long term to push the overall political climate to the right. We argue, instead, for the political independence of movements. When possible, we support third parties and independent candidacies that stand on these principles. Our long-term strategic goal is the construction of a mass party that can champion workers’ interests independently of the two-party system. Draft Revision 1, September 2014 Socialists as well as working-class and social movement activists have attempted to build independent parties for more than 100 years. The renewed interest in campaigning for socialist and community candidates stands on that tradition. In the past, those efforts were unable to break through at a national level and several were incorporated into the Democratic Party. Today, election laws, the amount of money necessary to build a campaign and the emphasis on campaigning through the media have raised the stakes against independent political action. Current Initiatives Solidarity is Prioritizing The Green Party campaign for governor/lieutenant governor in New York State is important for the issues it is raising. -

2019-2020 Making Cincinnati the National Epicenter for Minority Business Development 2 – 2019-2020 Accelerator Annual Report Letter from the Chair Over the past couple of years, we have outlined a bold vision and strategic plan to grow the aggregate annual revenues of minority businesses in the region by $1 billion and subsequently create an incremental 3,500 jobs by year-end 2022. This bold vision and plan have galvanized regional and national stakeholders desiring to partner with us to not only accomplish something transformational for Greater Cincinnati, but something that might truly inform and transform this work across the nation. Our four key pillars to achieve these bold goals, which are to grow our existing portfolio firms, build a robust pipeline, attract larger-scale minority firms to the region, and create new minority firms via acquisition of mainstream businesses, have each enjoyed major developments over the past year, and have collectively served to further elevate and position the Minority Business Accelerator as a national best practice. Importantly, our bold plan and vision follow over a decade of exceptional work in the region to build larger-scale minority-owned businesses, which was perhaps best captured in a LendingTree.com report released early in 2019 that recognized Cincinnati among the top 10 metropolitan areas in the country where minority entrepreneurs are finding success. Moreover, certain categories of that very same report, namely the percentage of minority-owned businesses in operation for more than the six years, as well as the percentage of minority businesses with annual revenues greater than $500K, rank Cincinnati as number one in the nation. -

A Marxist Analysis of the Nicaraguan Revolution? GRAHAM E. L. HOLTON LA BOTZ, D. H. What Went Wrong? The Nicaraguan Revolution: A Marxist Analysis. Brill: Leiden/London (Historical Materialism Book), 2017. Dan La Botz is a US academic, journalist, a prominent activist in the U.S. labour movement and a co-founder of Teamsters for a Democratic Union. He is also a leader of the US socialist orga- nization Solidarity, which apparently has roots in the Trotskyist tradition.1 In 1998 he received his Ph.D in American history at the University of Cincinnati, and later became professor of history and Latin American studies at Miami University, USA. He is an editor of Mexican Labor News and Analysis, and author of The Crisis of Mexican Labor (1988), as well as other books on the labour movement. La Botz sets out to show that the Sandinistas — Sandinista Front for National Liberation (FSLN) — were principally shaped by the Soviet and Cuban Communist models, and thus lacked any genuine democratic socialism. It is for this reason that the FSLN lacked rank-and-file democracy in the decision making of the National Directorate, placing great power in the hands of Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega. Top Cincinnati fundraisers and incumbents win For immediate release October 23, 2002 Contact Catherine Turcer, (513) 221-2100 CINCINNATI -- The top fundraising candidates for Mayor and Cincinnati City Council won in 2001, according to a report released today by Ohio Citizen Action. The winning candidate for Mayor, incumbent Charlie Luken, raised 3.9 times more than his three challengers. All of the incumbent candidates also won in 2001. The average incumbent raised 3.7 times more than the average non-incumbent. "Contributions don’t necessarily make victory more likely," said Catherine Turcer, campaign reform director for Ohio Citizen Action. "Often, favor-seekers contribute to a candidate precisely because their victory at the polls is already a foregone conclusion. They want to curry favor with someone who can reciprocate after the election." "Cincinnati’s old campaign financing system, however," Turcer said, "is clearly stacked against challengers and less well-funded candidates." Contribution totals were similar during 1997 ($2,322,158), 1999 ($2,421,109) and 2001 ($2,461,993), according to a report released today by Ohio Citizen Action. 1997 contribution limits, however, changed the giving patterns. The 1997 limits restricted labor unions and Political Action Committees (PACs) and individual limits led some to use family members to inflate contributions.
