TESLA Demo Booklet

AUSTRIA FORUM | https://www.austria-forum.org Demo Booklet (For German version click here)

The decision to build a demo around the name Tesla emerged since Graz University of Technology decided to honor the former student Tesla by publishing a book on him, one version in English, the other in German. The name Tesla as name for one of the earliest electric cars allowed to also add a little bit on the electric cars, and on Musk as the mastermind behind it and other interesting endeavors. This booklet allows users to test some of the many features of NIDs (Networked Interactive Digital books). The full range of functionalities is explained in a separate booklet “User Manual”: An Alpha Version is currently available but will be replaced by a Version 1 with some changes and additions in Spring 2020. The main features explained by this demo are that one can see how books and other information can be linked together in both directions and can be enriched by all kinds of multimedia. Indeed, such additions can be modified, or new ones added by the editor of a book at any time. Hence a set of isolated unchanging books are replaced by a set of interlinked books and other information, where the core contents of books remain unchanged, but information can be added in many ways. Information can be any type of multimedia, but also interactive features like quizzes, discussion forms, or any other type of interactive program that runs using your favorite browser. The most important aspect shown in this demo is that books can be viewed anonymously, yet by logging in as user “demotesla” with password “sample”, users can choose from the blue annotation line shown in the right upper part of each page can choose “public”, or “red” or “green”. We recommend to first use public to view the following pages. By then choosing “red” many links indicated by rectangles give additional information; the same is true if you choose “green” but now you get different links and information. This shows one of the strong points of NID: one can provide different (additional) information depending on the user. This is usually one by registering as a certain user with a secrete password. However, to avoid having the necessity to log out and to log in with another username and password we are using in this demo the annotation facility. Note that in real applications registration offers many other useful purposes, like allowing to add information and sharing it with a group of users you have defined, working together with users of one or more groups, etc. However, this goes beyond what we try to show in this demo. So, in this case log in as explain and notice how the book changes as you from public to red or green! However, once you enter one of the biographical books on Tesla presented to you, you may decide to register with your name and add “private” material or material only visible to a group of users you have defined. Consult the user manual mentioned above if you want to go further than this demo. If you want to know still more, please look at the user manual and administration manual. If you like what NID can offer, just contact [email protected] and he will provide an installation manual and any help and Information required by you to start your own NID library.
