The 60th birthday celebration of Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Publisher of THISDAY Newspaper, and Founder/Chairman of the ARISE News Media group began with a Thanksgiving service held at The Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina. The service was well attended by prominent Nigerian politicians and dignitaries including the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. Family and friends from far and wide turned up to honour and rejoice with the media mogul on his Diamond Jubilee birthday anniversary. The two hour thanksgiving service that also coincided with the church’s harvest launch was officiated by The Very Reverend Humphrey Bamisebi Olumakaiye Diocesan Bishop Of Lagos, supported by other members of the clergy. It was an exhilarating service filled with hymns, prayers, words of exhortation, praise and worship, all to the joy of the celebrant who was thankful to God for keeping him in good health to celebrate this major milestone birthday surrounded NDUKA OBAIGBENA @ 60! by those dear to him. Immediately after the service, guests where hosted to brunch and drinks at the 5 star Sky Lounge restaurant at The Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island. Guests wined and dined till late evening when the host retired to prepare for the birthday dinner the next day. It is not every day we witness a momentous occasion especially one that is very close to our hearts. Last week, my boss Nduka Obaigbena turned 60 and even up till now, a week later, l am still reeling from the success of his birthday bash. Not only did l enjoy myself thoroughly, without being biased, l can safely say everyone that attended left with a lingering memory of the said event. That Nduka is a maverick is without any iota of doubt. That he is a genius is unquestionable. That he is forward thinking is stating the obvious. That he is a first amongst equals has been proven many times over. But all that aside, what is most endearing about Obaigbena is how he connects with people from all walks of life, both high and mighty down to the ordinary man on the street. Nasir Abubakar Daniya Student Number: 13052246 A Thesis Submitted in Fulfilment of Requirements for award of: Professional Doctorate Degree in Policing Security and Community Safety London Metropolitan University Faculty of Social Science and Humanities March 2021 Thesis word count: 104, 482 ii Abstract Since Nigeria’s independence from Britain in 1960, the country has made some progress while also facing some significant socio-economic challenges. Despite being one of the largest producers of oil in the world, in 2018 and 2019, the Brooking Institution and World Poverty Clock respectively ranked Nigeria amongst top three countries with extreme poverty in the World. Muslims from the north and Christians from the south dominate the country; each part has its peculiar problem. There have been series of agitations by the militants from the south to break the country due to unfair treatments by the Nigerian government. They produced multiple violent groups that killed people and destroyed properties and oil facilities. In the North, an insurgent group called Boko Haram emerges in 2009; they advocated for the establishment of an Islamic state that started with warning that, western education is prohibited. Reports say the group caused death of around 100,000 and displaced over 2 million people. As such, Niger Delta Militancy and Boko Haram Insurgency have been major challenges being faced by Nigeria for about a decade. To address such challenges, the Nigerian government introduced separate counterinsurgency interventions called Presidential Amnesty Program (PAP) and Operation Safe Corridor (OSC) in 2009 and 2016 respectively, which are both aimed at curtailing Militancy and Insurgency respectively.

  • A Stylistic Analysis of the Language of Political Campaigns in Nigeria: Evidence from the 2007 General Elections
A STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF THE LANGUAGE OF POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS IN NIGERIA: EVIDENCE FROM THE 2007 GENERAL ELECTIONS. V. E. Omozuwa & E. U. C. Ezejideaku Abstract Politicians all over the world embellish their language in a unique way to give extra effect and force to their message in order to achieve their objective of winning more votes. This can be embodied in rhetoric or propaganda, involving repetition, promise, colloquialism, word coinages, pidginized and figurative expressions. The denotative and connotative meanings of the figurative expressions are analysed. It is argued that propaganda as an aspect of this register is characterized by exaggeration, rhetorical questions, and abusive utterances. 1.0 Introduction Language use in political campaigns has certain characteristic features which differentiate it from other varieties of language use. Common as some of these features may be in everyday situation, they remain very unique with politicians and politics. The language of political campaign embodied in propaganda and rhetoric, is persuasive. Politicians adopt these linguistic devices to cajole the electorate to vote for them and their parties by presenting themselves as the only capable persons for the job. This study is a synchronic stylistic analysis of the various political utterances used during the electioneering process in Nigeria based on 35 political campaign materials randomly collected from the print media (mainly from the southern part of the country) during the just concluded elections into the various offices in the 2007 general elections in the country. The different stylistic devices politicians used to achieve their aim are examined from the stylistic point of view. This is to say that different situations call for different language use.

  • Satirizing Politicians and Public Officers in Nigerian Newspapers
The International Journal of Language Society and Culture Editors: Thao Lê and Quynh Lê URL: www.educ.utas.edu.au/users/tle/JOURNAL/ ISSN 1327-774X Satirizing Politicians and Public Officers in Nigerian Newspapers Rotimi Taiwo Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria Abstract Satire is one of the major ways societal ills are ridiculed by writers and social critics. This paper exam- ines how the Nigerian writers employ their creative potentials by manipulating words through morpho- logical and lexico-semantic processes in order to ridicule the vices in the society. The President of the nation, politicians, and the police are the major targets of satirist. The paper identified some linguistic processes used to convey satirical expressions ion Nigerian newspapers, such as; blending, acronym- ing, metaphor, pun, conversion allusion and connotation. Key words: satire, politicians, humour, media, police, lexico-semantic Introduction The forms and function of any language use is one of the major objectives of modern linguistic en- quiry. In recent years, linguists have been studying how language is structured for certain specific communicative roles. The function a particular text is performing in the context of its use is particularly of importance in the modern day study of written and spoken texts. The concern of this work is one of such instances of language, which can be directly interpreted on the basis of its social relevance to the entire society. The Press is often seen as the watchdog of the society, which uses language as a tool to express its feelings about how the society runs at any particular period.

  • (Im) Partial Umpire in the Conduct of the 2007 Elections
VOLUME 6 NO 2 79 THE INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION AS AN (IM) PARTIAL UMPIRE IN THE CONDUCT OF THE 2007 ELECTIONS Uno Ijim-Agbor Uno Ijim-Agbor is in the Department of Political Science at the University of Calabar Pmb 1115, Calabar, Nigeria Tel: +080 355 23537 e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT As a central agency in the democratic game, the role of an electoral body such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is clearly of paramount importance in the process of transition to and consolidation of democracy. Unfortunately in Nigeria the performance of this institutional umpire since the First Republic has instead been a source of crisis and a threat to the existence of the Nigerian state. The widely perceived catastrophic failure of INEC in the April 2007 general elections was only one manifestation for the ‘performance crisis’ of antecedent electoral umpires in the Nigerian First, Second and Third republics. The paper highlights the malignant operational environment as a major explanation for the manifest multiple disorders of the elections and concludes that INEC’s conduct was tantamount to partiality. Thus, while fundamental changes need to be considered in the enabling law setting up INEC, ensuring the organisation’s independence, and guaranteeing its impartiality, the paper suggests that membership of the commission should be confined to representatives nominated by their parties and a serving judge appointed by the judiciary as chairman of the commission. INTRODUCTION In political theory the authority of the government in democracies derives solely from the consent of the governed. The mechanism through which that consent is translated into governmental authority is the regular conduct of elections.
