Recent analyses of anthropogenic impacts on marine systems have shown that the Ross Sea is the least affected stretch of ocean on Earth, although historical effects were not included in those studies. Herein the literature is reviewed in order to quantify the extent of extraction of biological resources from the Ross Sea continental shelf and slope from the start of the 20th century. There was none before that time. An intense extraction of Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddellii by the expeditions of the ‘heroic’ period and then by New Zealand to feed sled dogs in the 1950–1980s caused the McMurdo Sound population to decrease permanently. Otherwise no other sealing occurred. Blue whales Balaenoptera musculus intermedia were extirpated from waters of the shelf break front during the 1920s, and have not reappeared. Minke whales B. bonaerensis probably expanded into the blue whale vacated habitat, but were then hunted during the 1970–1980s; their population has since recovered. Some minke whales are now taken in ‘scientific whaling’, twice more from the slope compared to the shelf. Other hunted cetaceans never occurred over the shelf and very few ever occurred in slope waters, and therefore their demise from whaling does not apply to the Ross Sea. No industrial fishing occurred in the Ross Sea until the 1996–1997 summer, when a fishery for Antarctic toothfish Dissostichus mawsoni was initiated, especially along the slope. -

Kelsay The National Archives National Archives and Records Service General Services Administration Washington: 1955 National Archives Publication No. 56-8 i\ FORENORD To analyze and describe the permanently valuable records of the Fed eral Government preserved in the National Archives Building is one of the main tasks of the National Archives. Various kinds of finding aids are needed to facilitate the use of these records, and the first step in the records-description program is the compilation of preliminary inventories of the material in the 270-odd record groups to which the holdings of the National Archives are allocated. These inventories are called "preliminary" because they are provisional in character. They are prepared.as soon as possible after the records are received without waiting to screen out all disposable material or to per fect the arrangement of the records. They are compiled primarily for in ternal use: both as finding aids to help the staff render efficient refer ence service and as a means of establishing administrative control over the records. Each preliminary inventory contains an introduction that briefly states the history and fUnctions of the agency that accumulated the records. -

Vessel History The former U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Glacier is an oceangoing icebreaker that was originally designed and constructed for the U.S. Navy in the mid-1950s. In 1966, Glacier was transferred to the Coast Guard. Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi began constructing the icebreaker in August 1953 and delivered the ship to the U.S. Navy in May 1955. It was named for Glacier Bay, Alaska, and was the fourth ship to carry this name. After its initial shakedown cruise, Glacier sailed from its homeport of Boston, Massachusetts as Admiral Richard E. Byrd’s flagship bound for the Antarctic as part of Operation Deep Freeze I1 in late 1955. It reached the 1 Operation Deep Freeze I was the codename for a series of scientific expeditions to Antarctica in 1955-56. The impetus behind the expeditions was the International Geophysical Year 1957-58. IGY was a collaborative effort of 40 nations to study the North and South Poles and points in between. Their goal was to advance knowledge of Antarctic hydrography and weather systems, glacial movements, and marine life. The U.S. Navy was charged with supporting the U.S. scientists for their portion of the IGY studies. 2 Ross Ice Pack in December where it smashed through thick ice “carving” out a harbor in Kainan Bay for ships delivering materials, supplies, and labor for the construction of Little America V.2 After clearing a channel and leading a group of ships to Kainan Bay, Glacier headed toward the Ross Ice Shelf to assist in the construction of a naval air station at McMurdo Sound. -

Largely associated with polar exploration, and particularly its Arctic service, the ship’s history is a series of compelling stories of bravery in the face of peril, dedication to duty, and legendary exploits. Built in Scotland originally as a sealer in 1874, for the first ten years of service, she operated as part of the commercial sealing fleet off Newfoundland. Purchased by the US Government, it was put into service by the US Navy as part of the rescue fleet for the Greely Expedition to the Arctic in 1884, and first came to world- wide acclaim as the vessel that rescued the few survivors of that disastrous expedition. In 1885, the BEAR was transferred from the Treasury Department for service in the Arctic as a Revenue Cutter, and for an unprecedented 41 years ably patrolled the Arctic, saving lives and dispensing justice in this remote and often challenging region. Between 1886-1895, the captain of the BEAR was the legendary "Hell Roaring Mike" Healy, the first person of African-American descent to command a ship of the US Government. -
