About the Author Sjors van der Meer developed his passion for woodworking when he was a student at a furniture making company. He learned all about joinery and became an amateur cabinetmaker. The simple hand tools, the raw materials and the often-ancient techniques were a revelation. He decided to make a living out of the craft. Ever since, he has spent a lot of time in nature, working on green wood furniture and spoon carving. Since 2011 he has run green woodworking workshops with his friend and co-author Job Suijker. Job Suijker studied at the Technical University of Delft and worked for 20 years as an environmental advisor. In his late twenties he developed a passion for nature, especially for trees and forests, with a special fascination for the ancient trees (yew tree) of Great Britain. He fell in love with green woodworking while chopping firewood for his wood stove. After having been to the west coast of Ireland for a sabbatical, a self-educating period started; he saw a chance for a green woodworking revival. The course was hosted by the Dunnottar Bodgers Group (DBG) on a site in Dunnottar woodland park which lies just to the south of Stonehaven. The woodland is owned by Forestry Commission Scotland(FCS) and the Dunnottar Woodland Park Association(DWPA) act in a local stewardship role. The DBG worked closely with both FCS and the DWPA whilst setting up this course. The course was delivered by Kenny Grieve, the very experienced green wood turning based in Fife. Thirteen people attended the course and the evaluations confirm that the course was very well received by all. I think we can all take pride in this Guild’s efforts to put on a show of this caliber. We had fine examples of craftsmanship expressed in many styles with a special shout-out to Barney Travis, Best of Show winner for his fine Entrance Foyer Cabinet. We had several new makers this year and that makes me believe the efforts made to reach out to makers outside the local area are working. Each show continues to grow our circle of friends and potential Guild members. The show only happens every other year and for good reason, it takes a long time to make the kind of pieces we like to show. So, this is your first reminder to start thinking about that piece you think would look good in the 21st MWS gallery. Thanks to all who volunteered their time and talents to this year’s show!! No way could this happen without everyone who pitched in to help. We have had the same show committee for the past several shows and would like some new members.
