Peter Follansbee Kingston, MA 2018 TTRAG Conference 17th-century oak furniture from England and New England Peter Follansbee’s presentation will focus on his work studying and reproducing 17th-century oak furniture from Eng- land and New England. This work, featuring frame-and-panel construction and mortise-and-tenon joinery has many parallels in timber framing. Since the late 1980s, Follansbee has been immersed in this subject, studying period furniture in public and private col- lections both here and in England. Tool history as well as documentary history of the period rounds out the unravelling of this trade. WIth a slide presentation, Follansbee will show construction details, tool marks, decorative details and the tools used to create oak furniture. He will have a chance to a carving demonstration showing the basic tools involved and how these tools help design the patterns in oak. About the Speaker Peter Follansbee started green woodworking in 1978-80 pri-marily making ladderback chairs. Learned from John (now Jennie) Alexander, author of "Make a Chair from a Tree". By taking frequent workshops at Drew Langsner's Country Workshops, PF learned about timber framing, basket-making, coopering, chairmaking (ladderbacks and Wind- sors) and learned spoon and bowl carving, from Jögge Sundqvist, Wille Sundqvist and Drew Langsner. Starting in 1989, PF focused on learning to reproduce oak furniture of 17th-century New England and between 1994-2014 he worked in a living history museum in Plymouth Massachusetts making carved oak furniture. PF is one of the organizers of Green- wood Fest, put on by Plymouth CRAFT in Plymouth, Massachusetts each June. He has written extensively, both furniture history and how-to woodworking. Numerous DVDs with Lie-Nielsen Toolworks, appearances on Roy Underhill's The Woodwright's Shop. Peter has taught various woodworking classes in the US, UK and Sweden. Co-authored Make a Joint Stool from a Tree with Jennie Alexander, published by Lost Art Press in 2012. His follow-up book on joinery and carving is forthcoming from Lost Art Press. .

The course will consist of an informal meeting and meal in a local hotel on the Friday evening prior event where participants can meet and have a general discussion. Kenny Grieve is the trainer for this course and will be on hand to answer any questions before starting the course proper the following day. On the Saturday morning the participants will embark on the two day practical course based in Dunnottar woods, where the Dunnottar Bodgers Group have established a base.

CWA SKILLS DEVELOPMENT SCHEME Green woodworking and pole lathe turning for beginners Hosted by: Dunnottar Bodgers Group & Dunnottar Woodland Park Association Stonehaven FINAL REPORT Introduction This is the final report produced by the Dunnottar Bodgers Group, Stonehaven, for the course held in Dunnottar woods on the 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th of April 2010 entitled “Green wood woodworking and pole lathe turning for beginners”. The course was hosted by the Dunnottar Bodgers Group (DBG) on a site in Dunnottar woodland park which lies just to the south of Stonehaven. The woodland is owned by Forestry Commission Scotland(FCS) and the Dunnottar Woodland Park Association(DWPA) act in a local stewardship role. The DBG worked closely with both FCS and the DWPA whilst setting up this course. The course was delivered by Kenny Grieve, the very experienced green wood turning based in Fife. Thirteen people attended the course and the evaluations confirm that the course was very well received by all. Key learning points • To provide an opportunity for participants to take part in a variety of green wood working processes. • Use bodging processes to make a simple wooden stool from locally sourced timber and/or contribute to the manufacture of shaving horses for use by the host group. This was also the case with shaving horse tool that once was an indispensable tool for carpenters, bodgers (chair makers), bowyers (bows makers) and coopers (barrel makers). The shaving horse is nowadays being used mostly by enthusiasts that still almost all the things make by hands (peeling rafters and purlins, to shape spindles for turning, chair legs, barrel staves, shingles, and the like), but this tool is also used by some specific crafts, like the guitar making – for making the neck of a guitar, and also for the rustic furniture manufacture or for green woodworking. Shaving horse can even today be a useful tool, because it has a wide range of use, especially if your type of work is based on small series. There are many designs of shaving horse, and each of them is used for some specific purpose. It is usually used with a drawknife or spokeshave, but can be adapted for use with other hand tools. A shaving horse is an old woodworking tool used to hold a workpiece in a place while it is worked by a cutting tool such as spokeshave or drawknife. It holds slats, posts and rungs for shaving and drawknifing. Shaving horse is basically a workbench for shaping with a drawknife or spokeshave. Shaving horse consists out of the bench, on which the woodworker sits; the pedal operated clamp, whose function is to fasten the workpiece and the legs to support the shaving horse while it is being shaved.

I think we can all take pride in this Guild’s efforts to put on a show of this caliber. We had fine examples of craftsmanship expressed in many styles with a special shout-out to Barney Travis, Best of Show winner for his fine Entrance Foyer Cabinet. We had several new makers this year and that makes me believe the efforts made to reach out to makers outside the local area are working. Each show continues to grow our circle of friends and potential Guild members. The show only happens every other year and for good reason, it takes a long time to make the kind of pieces we like to show. So, this is your first reminder to start thinking about that piece you think would look good in the 21st MWS gallery. Thanks to all who volunteered their time and talents to this year’s show!! No way could this happen without everyone who pitched in to help. We have had the same show committee for the past several shows and would like some new members. If you have some time and would like to be a bigger part of the show, please let me know. We need help with reaching out to makers from outside the guild, help with show promotion and sponsor relationship.
