Multifunctionality of the Chosen Contemporary Railway Stations
DOI: 10.21005/pif.2019.37.B-04 MULTIFUNCTIONALITY OF THE CHOSEN CONTEMPORARY RAILWAY STATIONS WIELOFUNKCYJNOŚĆ WYBRANYCH, WSPÓŁCZESNYCH DWORCÓW KOLEJOWYCH Agata Pięt dr inż. arch. Author’s Orcid number: 0000-0003-2682-4211 Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa w Nysie Instytut Nauk Technicznych ABSTRACT The main function of railway stations is to serve travelers and enable them to travel by rail. However, even from the first years of the railway's existence, railway stations were accompanied by additional functions. Railway stations are functionally complex structures – transport nodes and multifunctional buildings. The possible solutions of the functional and spatial layouts of the railway stations were analyzed. Key words: railway station, transport node, multifunctionality. 48 s p a c e & FORM | p r z e s t r z e ń i FORMa ‘37_2019 1. INTRODUCTION The first railway stations were built in 1830 in Liverpool and Manchester. Both of them had simple forms – they served mainly rail passengers, enabling them to travel. Along with the new railway lines connecting distant cities, people traveled longer distances. It was also necessary to wait longer for the next train, which led, among others, to build hotels within railway stations [15, pp 16]. An example of such a solution is a hotel in the front building of the St Pancras station in London (1868-1876) [13, pp 98]. -

Within the span of a few decades, the physician and collector Rudolf Leopold assembled a collection of more than 5,000 carefully selected artworks. Masterpieces by Gustav Klimt, the world’s largest Egon Schiele collection and key works by Oskar Kokoschka provide fascinating insight into the art of the 20th century. THE WORLD´S LARGEST EGON SCHIELE COLLECTION The abundance of key works by Egon Schiele (1890-1918) in the Leopold Collection is astonishing: “Cardinal and Nun”, “Setting Sun”, “Self-Portrait with Chinese Lanterns”, “Dead City”, “Reclin- ing Woman”, “The Island City” and more. There are works from all of the important phases in the artist’s career.
