TOUGH START: Due to injuries and a difficult schedule,Walsh Jesuit has Date Opponent Time/Score struggled out of the gate this season. The Warriors have a 1-3 record through four games for the second consecutive season. Walsh Jesuit’s losses have not been by much. Walsh Jesuit’s point differential is just -27 this season, as the Warriors 8/26 @ Toledo Whitmer L, 29-20 have been close in every game. Even in its largest loss, a 27-14 setback to Bishop Whitmer Memorial Stadium Watterson, the Warriors stormed back in the fourth quarter before falling by 13 points. Just like last season, Walsh Jesuit picked up its first win of the year 9/2 @ St. Vincent-St.Mary L, 10-3 against Athol Springs (NY) St. Francis. John Cistone Field at Green Street Stadium DON’T OVERLOOK THESE GUYS: Just a year ago, the Warriors faced a big challenge in a midseason matchup with the Wildcats. Led by rookie head coach 9/9 @ Bishop Watterson L, 27-14 Scott Beigie, the Warriors played quite well, taking a 27-23 lead with less than a Hagely Field minute remaining in the contest. Only a last minute touchdown drive orches- trated by Saint Ignatius quarterback Dennis Grosel ‘16 saved the Wildcats from an upset. This year’s Warriors are undoubtably younger, but just as hungry for a 9/16 vs. St. Francis (NY) W, 23-21 victory over the Cats. Conway Memorial Stadium

YOUNG GUNS: A significant characteristic of the Warriors this season is 9/23 vs. Saint Ignatius 7 p.m. youth. Walsh Jesuit returns just six starters from last season’s 3-7 squad, as many Conway Memorial Stadium experienced players graduated. The Warriors have a relatively young roster, with 25 sophomores listed on the varsity roster. 9/30 vs. Padua 7 p.m. TRUE WARRIOR: Walsh Jesuit’s relatively young offense is led by a seasoned Conway Memorial Stadium veteran, senior quarterback Alex Weitman. The 6’0”, 175 pound signalcaller has started all four games for the Warriors this season, and played in a hand- 10/7 @ Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 7 p.m. ful last year. Weitman is enjoying a solid season, as the senior headlined the team’s comeback effort last week in a 23-21 win over St. Francis. Weitman also Lion Stadium completed 13-of-21 passes for 113 yards and a 12-yard touchdown strike in the Bishop Watterson contest. 10/14 vs. Archbishop Hoban 7 p.m. Conway Memorial Stadium OPTION ATTACK: As Wildcats head coach Chuck Kyle ‘69 told Saint Igna- tius sportswriter Eddie Dwyer, Walsh Jesuit has developed the option play as a weapon in a diverse offensive attack. Utilizing the veteran skills of Weitman and 10/21 @ Benedictine 7 p.m. senior slotback Joshua Bennett, the Warriors will try to bleed the clock and keep Bedford Bearcat Stadium the Wildcats’ offense on the sidelines this week. 10/28 vs. Lake Catholic 7 p.m. GETTING IT DONE ON SPECIAL TEAMS: The Warriors has struggled Conway Memorial Stadium at times this season, but Walsh Jesuit’s special teams have impressed all season. Senior kicker Quinn Saluan has connected on several field goals this season, including a clutch 28-yarder against St. Vincent-St. Mary. The return game has similarly been solid. Sophomore Tommy Cummings flashed the Warriors’ special teams prowess against Bishop Watterson, returning a kickoff for 82 yards. The lengthy return set up a Bennett touchdown run.

UP NEXT: The Warriors will stay in the friendly confines of Conway Memorial Stadium for a 7 p.m. showdown with Padua on Friday, September 30. The War- riors defeated the Bruins in last season’s matchup, 14-7. Coach Chuck Kyle’s Wildcats, scoring all of their points in the first half, defeated the Valley Forge Patriots, 41-0, on Byers Field in Parma’s Robert. M. Boulton Stadium. Although the early years of Saint Ignatius football were not laden with the success Wildcats faithful have grown accustom to, the man who put the football program on the local map was Mr. Ralph Vince, a graduate of Martins Ferry High School and Washington & Jefferson University who studied law at Western Reserve University. The astute and eloquent Coach Vince guided his Golden Tornado, as Saint Igna- tius was known then, to a City Championship in 1925, a 15-game winning streak and an overall record of 29-6 from 1923 through 1926. Those 29 victories included a City Runner-Up finish in 1926 and 19 shutouts. Coach Vince’s legendary 1925 team yielded just 25 points all season and compiled 25 consecutive shutout quarters. In 1925 and 1926, the Golden Tornado posted 8-1 seasons.
