MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

  • The Effects of Collective Bargaining on Minor League Baseball Players
\\jciprod01\productn\H\HLS\4-1\HLS102.txt unknown Seq: 1 14-MAY-13 15:57 Touching Baseball’s Untouchables: The Effects of Collective Bargaining on Minor League Baseball Players Garrett R. Broshuis* Abstract Collective bargaining has significantly altered the landscape of labor relations in organized baseball. While its impact on the life of the major league player has garnered much discussion, its impact on the majority of professional baseball players—those toiling in the minor leagues—has re- ceived scant attention. Yet an examination of every collective bargaining agreement between players and owners since the original 1968 Basic Agree- ment reveals that collective bargaining has greatly impacted minor league players, even though the Major League Baseball Players Association does not represent them. While a few of the effects of collective bargaining on the minor league player have been positive, the last two agreements have estab- lished a dangerous trend in which the Players Association consciously con- cedes an issue with negative implications for minor leaguers in order to receive something positive for major leaguers. Armed with a court-awarded antitrust exemption solidified by legisla- tion, Major League Baseball has continually and systematically exploited mi- * Prior to law school, the author played six years as a pitcher in the San Francisco Giants’ minor league system and wrote about life in the minors for The Sporting News and Baseball America. He has represented players as an agent and is a J.D. Candidate, 2013, at Saint Louis University School of Law. The author would like to thank Professor Susan A. FitzGibbon, Director, William C.

  • Ottawa … There Used to Be a Ball Team There the History of Professional Baseball in Ottawa from 1993 to the Present
Ottawa … There used to be a ball team there The history of professional baseball in Ottawa from 1993 to the present By Todd Devlin Jan. 3, 2010 Wayne Scanlan had heard the rumours of deterioration at the old ballpark, but he’d yet to see it himself. A long-time sports columnist at the Ottawa Citizen, Scanlan was already having a difficult time adjusting to his first summer in 16 years without pro ball in the city. But it only got worse when he took a trip down Coventry Road in July of 2009 to see what had become of Ottawa’s once-beautiful ballpark. It wasn’t a pretty sight. “The city had it all locked up so no one could use the place, and there was debris around the outside of the stadium,” said Scanlan, who was a regular at the ballpark over the years, both as a columnist and as a fan when it featured some of the best ball in the country. The playing surface itself was in shambles. The once-picturesque infield, which had been carefully manicured for 16 years, was covered with weeds. “Giant ones,” Scanlan said. “Like a couple feet high. There were even weeds overrunning the warning track in the outfield. It was pretty sad.” So sad, that it prompted him to write a column in the Citizen about the stadium’s sorry state of affairs. Fortunately, the city responded, cutting the grass, pulling the weeds and generally cleaning things up at the stadium that once played host to future major-league stars.
