Based on this research it is estimated that B.C. secondary manufacturing generated about 14,000 direct jobs and $1.94 billion in sales (1994 estimates) The Directory to Secondary Manufacturing of Wood Products in British Columbia was completed to support the market development efforts of the B.C. industry. The forest products sector is increasingly competitive and better information does work to reduce the risk associated with market development. In order to complete this report a listing of B.C. secondary manufacturing companies was developed gathering names from various industry associations, and from private and public listings. Companies in this listing were requested to complete a questionnaire. Not all B.C. companies involved in secondary manufacturing of wood products are included in this directory .. Some elected not to respond to our requests to participate and provide company information. Others, despite concerted efforts to keep the company listing comprehensive, may have been missed. If your company is not listed in the directory and you would like to be listed in the next update, a copy of the Data Request form is included at the end of the directory. Complete this and forward to the noted address. v HOW TO USE THIS DIRECTORY Section A Alphabetical Company Listing This Section consists of an alphabetical listing of the companies included in the directory. Each company is identified by name, the company address is provided, and the company is classified by business type and cross-referenced with the company profile page. The business type classification is based on the company’s major product. Section B Product Listing This section, in a yellow-pages format, lists the companies under a variety of products. Section C Company Profiles The section is arranged by business type, contains specific company profiles.     Built to last Row IDid It Sir Walter Lindal, founder Lindal Cedar Homes Sir Walter Lindal's name may carry an aristocratic ring but his origins are anything but lordly. Born to hardscrabble Icelandic immigrants in 1919, he grew up on a wheat farm in Saskatchewan, Canada, with five brothers and sisters. ("Sir" is the translation of his given name, Sculi.) After his mother died, his father lost the farm and sent him and his twin brother to an orphanage. Despite this Dickensian background, the company he founded in 1945, Seattle-based Lindal Cedar Homes, is now the world's biggest manufacturer of prefabricated cedar houses, with 193 employees and sales of $50 million last year. Prefab housing is a decidedly utilitarian concept, but Lindal gave it high-class appeal with innovative designs, top-quality materials, and deft marketing. Along the way he designed a machine gun, wrote a book, and racked up 17 patents. I was five when we went to the orphanage. Tliere were times when we went a couple of days without any food. I knew what hunger was. I lost my mother at two. She died of childbed lever—a doctor's dirty hands. My dad kind of fell apart. He had a couple of crop failures and lost the farm. He had six kids to take care of. My first venture was raising chickens. I was about 13 years old. We bought chicks for 4 cents each. We started the winter with 14 and the cold killed 10 of them so we only had four left.

Fair use cases tend to fall into common patterns, or what this Article calls policy-relevant clusters. The policies underlying modern fair use law include promoting freedom of speech and of expression, the ongoing progress of authorship, learning, access to information, truth telling or truth seeking, competition, technological innovation, and the privacy and autonomy interests of users. If one analyzes putative fair uses in light of cases previously decided in the same policy cluster, it is generally possible to predict whether a use is likely to be fair or unfair. Policy-relevant clustering is not a substitute for appropriate consideration of the statutory fair use factors, but it provides another dimension to fair use analysis that complements the four-factor analysis and sharpens awareness about how the statutory factors, sometimes supplemented by other factors, should be analyzed in particular contexts. Parts I through V mainly provide a positive account of how fair use has been adjudicated in a variety of contexts and suggestions about factors that should be given greater or lesser weight in certain fair use policy clusters. Its articulation of the policy-relevant clusters into which the fair use cases typically fall should not, however, be understood as attempting to limn the outer bounds of fair use or to foreclose the development of new policy- relevant clusters.
